Analysis provided by TRAVEL TRENDS INDE JANUARY 2016 CTI shows travel growth softening in January 2016. LTI predicts moderate overall travel growth into 2016, with domestic business travel in decline. Overall travel volume (person trips to or within the United States involving a hotel stay or air travel) was higher in January 2016 than in January 2015. Growth in travel volume from January 2015-2016 was a bit softer than that of December 2014-2015. Domestic leisure travel expanded steadily, while domestic business travel declined for the third straight month. Growth in international inbound travel continues to trail domestic travel. The near-term outlook suggests this trend will continue through mid-2016. HIGHLIGHTS: * For CTI and LTI definitions, please see below. The Current Travel Index (CTI) has registered above the mark for 73 straight months, indicating that U.S. travel volume has been expanding for more than six years. January Travel Trends Index Current Travel Index and Leading Travel Index Index (>=expansion, <=decline) The CTI slid modestly in January, with a reading of.2, slightly below the 6-month moving average of.7. For the seventh consecutive month, international inbound travel lagged behind domestic travel growth due to a strong dollar, turbulent financial markets and weaker global demand. The Leading Travel Index (LTI) projects domestic travel will continue to outpace international travel in the months ahead. Domestic leisure travel continued to grow at a healthy pace, and will lead the U.S. travel market into mid- 2016. DETAILED RESULTS Domestic leisure travel accelerated in 2015, thanks to a strengthened labor market and low fuel costs. These drivers are persisting; however, near-term vacation intentions have dipped, suggesting some easing of this trend by mid-2016 after robust gains seen last year. U.S. business travel volumes fell year-over-year in Q4 2015, and will remain soft in the near-term as business sentiment wavers. U.S. inbound travel growth remains in the range of 1% as the strength of the dollar continues to weigh on foreign buying power, mitigating demand for inbound international travel. For the first time in several months, growth in forward-looking airline bookings from abroad has decelerated, suggesting further slowing by mid-2016. The U.S. travel market is now expanding at rates slightly below the post-recession average. The January CTI reading of.2 is lower than the prior-year average (.8), depressed by easing travel demand from abroad and a weakened domestic business travel segment. Domestic leisure travel will carry the industry into mid-2016, albeit at slightly slower growth rates, while inbound travel will remain muted. On the domestic side, we are still in range of five-year average rates of travel growth. Business travel has declined, but this has been more than offset by steady leisure segment growth. The factors weighing on inbound travel demand namely, a strong dollar and financial market fluctuations are likely temporary, and will ease into 2017, giving way to stronger growth. Total International Domestic Business Leisure METHODOLOGY The Current Travel Index (CTI) measures monthly travel volume in the U.S., including both domestic and international inbound travel. A score over indicates an expansion in travel relative to the same month the prior year. The index measures person trips that involved a hotel stay and/or a flight. STR provides monthly data on hotel room demand and A4A provides monthly data on passenger enplanements. TNS provides representative data on U.S. travelers to determine the average length of stay, persons per traveler party and the proportion of hotel guests who also fly. On these bases, the CTI encompasses three traveler types that are shown below with their basic calculation. The international component of the CTI is based on monthly data from the U.S. Department of Commerce I-94 and I-92 programs, as well as Statistics Canada. The I-94 dataset is the basis of official overseas inbound travel estimates for the United States. The I-92 program is called the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), and tracks international travel to the U.S. with distinctions between inbound travel by foreign nationals and U.S. citizens. APIS is generally more timely than I-94, allowing for estimates of air arrivals with only a one-month lag. Domestic travel is measured as the residual of total travel minus international. The domestic leisure travel component of the CTI is based on STR room demand data that is segmented by type of property and day of the week. A domestic leisure travel proxy has been developed based on the location, type of property and day of the week of travel. Domestic business travel is measured as the residual of domestic travel minus domestic leisure. The Leading Travel Index (LTI) measures the likely average pace and direction of U.S. travel volume over the coming three and six month periods. A score over indicates an expansion in travel relative to the same period last year. The LTI econometric model includes three categories of information that have shown to be strongly capable of predicting short-term travel trends. High frequency macroeconomic data capture underlying movements in the labor market, exchange rates and company performance. Consumer sentiment data from the Conference Board provide a long-term trend of consumer attitudes that can be tracked with future travel patterns. Online search and bookings data provide a window into traveler planning based on data from ADARA and nsight, while data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) measures bookings.
