Before 1930 the area where today s Folksam is located used to be the city s gardens, to which the public had access on Sundays. Among other things, palm trees and banana plants could be spotted in the greenhouses. At the turn of the century there was a nurse, and moreover driving force, named Anna Lindhagen living in Stockholm. Through her work among the city s poor she had seen the misery and understood that spending time out in the fresh air would strengthen the inhabitants of small means. She had i.a. through her visits to Copenhagen seen how the allotment movement worked there and decided to try something similar in Stockholm. To her help she had another driving force, the commercial teller Anna Åbergsson. The first areas to be founded were Barnängen (1905) and Eriksdalslunden (1906). The participation was so great that the allotments had to be raffled of. The drawing of allotments was held at the so-called Tobaksladan ( Tobacco barn ) where today s Tobakshagen is located ( The Meadow of tobacco ). A great number of fruit trees were also handed out amongst the new members. The barn was later on burnt down.
There has been growing of vegetables, flowers and fruit at Eriksdalslunden ever since the foundation of the association in 1906. The area is an oasis for all the city s inhabitants, both for the ones inside the fences as well as the ones outside. Visitors from all over the country and guests from around the world are amazed over and admire the city s positive attitude towards such an area inside the actual city centre. You can go for walks, go jogging, cycle or walk your dog in the area and at the same time enjoy the vegetation. This is a big and important lung for the inhabitants of the city, where you can stress down from today s high pace. Hopefully our politicians will let this oasis, which is so meaningful and healthful to all of us, live on. The city of Stockholm is renting out the domains to the association, which then rents out the allotments to its members. The members pay an annual rent through the association to the city of Stockholm and an annual fee to the association for the common concerns of i.a. refuse collection, water, toilettes and administration. The cabins are allowed to be a maximum of 14m 2. The committee reviews all matters of construction before sending them forward to Stadsmuseet (Museum of Stockholm) and the local building committee. Today the association has 140 allotment gardens divided into 6 areas: Ängshagen, Silfwerlings hage, Strandhagen, Linhagen, Tobakshagen and Tullhagen (see map). Our goal is, as far as possible, to try to preserve the areas original allotmentcharacteristics, although unfortunately the older cabins are often in very bad condition. The land surrounding our gardens is taken care of by the association together with the city through a user agreement. We do spring-cleaning, take care of the nature by thinning out brushwood, cutting the meadows and planting. Our friends, the birds and bats, are provided with nesting boxes. Some of the trees that are fallen down are kept for insects and butterflies. The association has an agreement with the city on taking care of the allotment gardens and the buildings, e.g. the area of pure grass is to be between 10 15m 2, everyone takes care of the fences around their garden, i.e. scraping and painting, changing what is broken (provided by the association), see to it that the walk outside is shovelled and raked, the trees are not to be too high so that the neighbour won t be shaded, you should be able to see that some sort of cultivation is taking place etc.
Would you like to become a member? Report your interest through our website or write to us. The registration fee is at the moment 150 kr, and is to be paid to PG 45 35 07 6. You will be registered in our queue after you have paid the fee. Your time in the queue will be based on the date at which the receipt of the fee is registered. Thereafter the annual fee is 100 kr. The registration fee covers year one, and payment is to be maid per calendar year. The payment is to be provided to us at the latest 31st of March each year. If there is no registration of payment we will interpret this as if you no longer wish to continue as a member, and you will be crossed of the list. NOTE! We do not send any reminders and you may not either change your mind later on. All the cabins are sold through the association and so-called first refusals are used.
