WASHINGTON NATIONALS (9-1) vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (5-7) Sunday, April 17, 2016 Citizens Bank Park 1:35 p.m. EDT Game 13; Home 7 LHP Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Charlie Morton (1-1, 5.23) YESTERDAY S ACTION: The Phillies lost to the Washington Nationals, 8-1 at Citizens Bank Park Starter Aaron Nola (L, 0-2) had a rough night on the mound, allowing 7 ER on 7 hits in 5.0 IP Washington jumped on Nola in the 1 st inning, scoring 3 runs on a sac fly by Bryce Harper, an RBI single by Ryan Zimmerman and an RBI triple by Daniel Murphy Opposing starter Max Scherzer roped a 2-out, 2-run double to right in the top of the 4 th inning before Harper added a 2-run HR in the 5 th to make it 7-0 Nationals Cameron Rupp crushed a solo HR to left on a full count in the bottom of the 5 th But Scherzer and the Nats bullpen held the Phillies scoreless over the final four frames. ELIAS SAYS: Last night, Bryce Harper extended his home run streak at Citizens Bank Park to five games as the Nationals defeated the Phillies, 8-1 Harper is just the 4 th visiting player ever to homer in five straight games against Philadelphia The others were Jim Bottomley (1929), Ernie Banks (1955), and Matt Stairs (2004-07), who joined the Phillies during their World Series Championship run in 2008 Only Banks extended his streak to six games. ON THIS DATE IN PHILLIES HISTORY: April 17, 1976 At Wrigley Field, Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt hit four home runs in a single game, including the game winner in the top of the 10 th inning, when the Phillies came back from an 11-run deficit to beat the Cubs, 18-16 The future Hall of Famer was the first National Leaguer and third MLB player ever to hit four HR s in consecutive at-bats. SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG: The Phillies are looking to avoid their second series sweep of the 2016 season (previous: 4/4-7 at CIN, 0-3) They have not been swept at home since September 14-16, 2015, which happened to be against the Washington Nationals (0-3). BULL DURHAM: Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera has walked six times in his last three games and 11 times overall this season, good for 3 rd -most in the majors this season Only TOR s Jose Bautista (13) and PIT s Gregory Polanco (12) have walked more Last year, Herrera didn t draw his 11 th walk until August 4 th in his 324 th plate appearance Herrera has also seen more pitches than anyone in the majors this season (255) and ranks first in MLB in pitches per plate appearance at 5.20 (next: CLE s Napoli, 4.97). STRUGGLE BUS: Offense has been hard to come by for the Phillies so far this season They have scored just 31 runs in their 12 games, tied for the fewest in the NL and 27 th in MLB, while their 2.58 runs per game average ranks last in the NL and 29 th in MLB (last: MIN, 2.27) Philadelphia s offense also ranks T-25 th in the majors in hits (77), 26 th in OPS (.619), 29 th in batting (.207) & RBI (28), and last in OBP (.267). NAT BITES: The Phillies have lost each of their last five games to the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park (since 9/14/15), which is their longest home losing streak versus Washington since a six-game stretch from September 20, 2011 to May 22, 2012 The Phils have never lost more than six straight at home to the Nats since their inaugural season in 2005 Philadelphia still owns a sizeable advantage in their all-time home record versus Washington, going 61-42 (.592) in their 103 games here Last year, the Phillies went 7-12 (.368) against the Nationals, marking their third losing season to WSH in the last five seasons (10-9 in 2014, 8-11 in 2013, 9-9 in 2012, 8-10 in 2011). THE PHUTURE IS BRIGHT: In January, MLB.com ranked the Top 100 prospects in baseball and Philadelphia had seven players on that list, more than any other club The list includes: SS J.P. Crawford (#5 overall), RHP Jake Thompson (#55), OF Nick Williams (#64), RHP Mark Appel (#70), OF Cornelius Randolph (#84), C Jorge Alfaro (#96), and OF Roman Quinn (#99) Additionally, three of the Phillies minor league affiliates finished in 1 st place in their respective divisions in 2015 Double-A Reading went 80-61 (.567) to win the Eastern League s Eastern Division The Fightin Phils advanced all the way to the EL Championship series, where they fell to the Bowie Baysox in the best-of-five series, three games to two Single-A Clearwater finished in 1st place in both the first and second halves of their Florida State League season (37-33, 42-25; 79-58 overall) In short-season A-ball, Williamsport had the best record in the New York-Penn League (46-30,.605) Overall, 34 Phillies farmhands were selected as All-Stars in 2015, while Dusty Wathan (EL) and Greg Legg (FSL) were both named Manager of the Year in their respective leagues. THE CHOSEN ONE: This June, the Phillies hold the #1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft... Only once before in franchise history have the Phillies had the top pick (which began in 1965)... Philadelphia selected Pat Burrell out of the University of Miami with the #1 overall pick in 1998... Pat the Bat made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 2000 and went on to hit.253 with 292 HR and 976 RBI in 1,640 career ML games (through 2011)... He was a key piece of the Phillies 2008 World Series Championship club.
