Date:3/2/15 Visual Art Extension Program Welcome Newsletter Term 1 2015 Dear Parent/Carer, Congratulations, your child has been accepted and successfully enrolled into The Canning Vale College Visual Art Extension Program for 2015. This letter is to inform you and your child of some of the details and requirements of the program. Please read through this letter with your child carefully, then sign and return to Miss Eve by Wednesday 27th of February. We are looking forward to the new year ahead and involving your child in a range of art experiences. Art Extension has expanded this year so there are some changes to the program lay out and expectations. I look forward to planning and providing art opportunities, for your child to engage, inspire, learn and create new artwork in 2015. Past Achievements Last year was a big year for The Arts at CVC. We entered a multitude of competitions and community events showing off our students artistic talents and achievements to the public. Students work was exhibited in events such as Subiaco Photography Awards, Darlington, The Young Originals to name a few. Congratulations and commendations to all students who contributed last year, in particular those students who received awards and prizes, and who participated in community art projects. Community Urban Art Mural Project Late last year students were part of an Urban Art Workshop. They collaborated with professional urban artists and learnt new spray painting techniques. Students designed and painted a large scale mural on the back of the gym facing out to the oval. Students created designs involving different sporting activities and characters to be scattered into the murals design.

The Visual Art Extension was once again commissioned to create a mural for the Goodstart Early Learning Centre for the second year in a row. The Centre requested the design to be inclusive of different nationalities of the children who attended the day care facility. They requested for the design to incorporate each countries flag and hello in the traditional written text. This was a challenge for students to achieve this precise detail. Student also created interpretive images and patterns relating to each culture. With all of these achievements the Art Department held our biggest school art exhibition last year. We are excited and enthusiastic towards this year s exhibition and are hoping to exceed expectations again. This comes down to our talented students and what they create throughout the year, and I am looking forward to seeing their creations. This Term Students will start the term focusing on core drawing and contemporary painting skills. There will also be opportunities to attend exclusive workshops and excursions. Rottnest Art Camp Rottnest Art Camp is on offer for a limited number of Year 9 and 10 students - so make sure you get in fast - this will be the only camp this year for the Art program. It is strongly recommended that Year 9 and 10 students attend this camp as we will be exploring Australian history and arts in society while we enjoy the beautiful iconic island. It is a really fun way to start the year in Visual Art Extension, for students to get to know one another and make new friends in the program. Sculpture by the Sea We will be venturing to Cottesloe Beach this term, an excursion exclusive to year 7 and 8 students. Sculpture by the Sea is a nationally recognised celebration and display of contemporary artwork. It is always a treat to visit the beach and leisurely walk around and view each interesting creation, perhaps with an ice- cream in hand. Exhibitions and Competitions I have already signed up for our students to enter a few competitions this term. The Propel Youth Arts Sketchbook Project is quite popular and students artwork is exhibited from central Perth to regional WA. I encourage students to enter as an individual in this art opportunity. The City of Gosnells Art Awards are also coming up which is always a pleasant community event to attend and see the local artistic talent.

Students are always encouraged to enter community exhibitions as individuals and also attend events to keep up to date with arts in society. This is also a great way to find inspiration and to learn from other artists to benefit their own artistic practice. If I have entered your child s work in an exhibition and it is successfully selected into a competition, a letter in writing outlining details of the event will be given to your child. It is strongly recommended that you and your child attend the opening ceremony as awards are announced on the day. Art Classes In School Art In School Art classes will be run by myself and Miss Hotchkin, we have a wide knowledge and experience in teaching specialist art programs. Miss Hotchkin Ms Hotchkin has a wealth of experience, having taught visual art for ten years. She has her own art practice and regularly exhibits and sells her artwork in the Perth local community. She specializes in drawing in printmaking since completing her university degree in Visual Art. Sarah Eve (Myself) This is my fourth year at CVC teaching Visual Art and running the Visual Art Extension Program. I have completed a Bachelor of Fine Art and my Dip Ed in Secondary Education. As well as my Masters of Education specializing in Gifted and Talented Education. I specialize in Drawing, Printing and Textiles and have contributed and organized several exhibitions in Perth and interstate. After School Art Wednesday After School Art Classes will be taught by Tutors and guest Artists. Students will be divided into class groups and allocated an Art room and a Tutor for the term. This information will be printed and posted up outside room D9. Students are expected to independently check what room and Tutor they have, at the start of each term before class on Wednesday afternoon. I have attached a Calendar for Term 1 After School activities, please take note of class dates and activities. There will be no class on the first and last week of the term or on parent teacher evenings. Students are required to attend After School Art Class after school on Wednesdays from 3.10pm- 4.45pm. This is a mandatory class and students who are regularly absent (3 or more absences in a term) will potentially be removed from the program. If for some reason your child is unable to attend practice for a legitimate reason such as illness or misadventure, etc. I will need prior notice via email - sarah.eve@education.wa.edu.au

Expectation and Exclusion It is expected and required that students participate fully in every aspect of the program with a positive attitude and behaviour. Following school rules at all times and commitment to the program. Your child can potentially be excluded from the Program if they participate in any of the following- 1. They are externally suspended from school for fighting, bullying, drugs, disrespect to a teacher, or damaging school equipment. 2. If they are found to be maliciously bullying other students in the program. 3. If they are regularly missing assessment work in any other subject. 4. If they are not contributing to the Program or being negative to the Programs goals. 5. If they miss more than 3 Wednesday After School Art classes without notification from their parents. 6. If they do not uphold the values and behaviours we expect of Canning Vale College students. Acceptance into the Visual Art Extension Program is a privilege. This is a school program that many students strive to get into. If your child is excluded from the Visual Art Extension Program, no refund will be given for their fees. Your child is an exceptional art student who has shown great promise and created outstanding artwork to have been accepted and given this opportunity. I have great expectations and am looking forward to seeing what your child creates and how their individual artistic talent develops within this program. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions you would like to ask and thank you in advance for your support.
