Elluminate Live! Web Conferencing Configuration Guide compiled from Elluminate, UAF s CDE and UAA s emedia This guide will assist you in configuring your computer for Elluminate Live! sessions. Completing this configuration may take from 4 to 40 minutes, depending on your Internet connection. For best results, schedule this time at least three days prior to your scheduled class meeting time in case additional troubleshooting is needed with your university s IT support team. NOTE You may not be able to join an Elluminate Live! session if you do not go through this guide. If more help is needed, try http://www.elluminate.com/support/, Elluminate Live!'s support site. For further assistance, the UAS Helpdesk is available at 796-6400, in Juneau and (877) 465-6400, outside Juneau. This guide is divided into 5 parts: 1) Computer requirements 2) Connection speed 3) Headsets 4) Java Web Start 5) Elluminate Live! configuration room Part 1: Computer Requirements Before you begin, you must be sure you are working on a computer that has the following: Windows Mac Windows 98/ME/2000/XP Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 and all versions of 10 Pentium III 500 MHz processor G3 500 MHz or faster ALL Computers 256 MB RAM 20 MB free disk space Soundcard with speakers and microphone or headset (discussed later) 28.8 Kbps Internet connection (minimum) Java Web Start (Windows and Mac OS 9 users only) Part 2: Connection Speed To use Elluminate Live!, a 28.8 kbs connection speed is a minimum. Part 3: Headsets Elluminate Live! can transmit our voices over the Internet. This means that you must be able to listen with your computer and speak into it. However, speakers and a microphone will not allow you to effectively participate in Elluminate Live! sessions. A headset is recommended because most headset microphones are unidirectional, keeping out extra sounds from the room. Headsets are available at the bookstore and online. Headsets can be purchased at Best Buy, CompUSA, Fred Meyer, Office Depot and Shimek's Audio, to name a few. Online options are even more just do a search on Google for computer headsets. Costs range from $8 to $50; Logitech and AltecLansing are reliable brands. However, there have been some issues with Logitech headsets and the new Intel MacBooks. The way the headset connects to your computers is one consideration. In order to easily use Elluminate's capabilities, it is recommended that an analog headset be purchased, not a USB one. An analog headset ends with two jacks, similar in size to walkman headphones and earbuds. The microphone may be marked with a and would go into a similarly marked plug on your computer. The other jack is for the headphones and may be marked with or and would go into a similarly marked jack in your computer. Setting up audio within Elluminate Live! is extremely important for a successful session. Later when you visit the Elluminate Live! configuration room, you will need to follow the directions on the whiteboard to set up the audio. Volume is controlled within Elluminate, however, some headsets have a separate control. It may look something like this. Be sure to consider this as you are setting volume in the Ellumiante Live! Configuration room. In some cases, your microphone may not be strong enough. If this is the case, you can select the Microphone boost in the Audio Set Up menu. If you audio is coming through too strongly, you may have to deselect this tool so your voice is a better quality for other participants. elive Session Preparation - 2 of 6
