Introduction to NSave for Desktops NSave is a service provided by Information Services that utilizes the software program CPP (CrashPlanPro). CPP is one of the most widely acclaimed backup solutions that can be deployed across an institution. To make the system as user friendly as possible, Information Services has customized this particular offering for common desktop computer systems within UNL. Highlights of this system include: Very convenient way to back up your critical data files on your personal computer. No need to worry about changing tapes, Full or Incremental backups, tape rotation policies, broken tape drives, or off-site storage. Users can retrieve their files on their own, anytime day or night. If assistance is required, however, trained support staff are available during normal University hours of operation. Erased files can be retrieved up to 6 months from the date they were erased. To allow Information Services to inform you of issues related toward NSave, the electronic mail address of each NSave subscriber is added to an electronic mailing list. 2

CPP Installation Instructions The following instructions will guide you through the process required to install CPP on your desktop computer. Please review the instructions before beginning, and if you are not comfortable with any phase of the installation, please ask for assistance. Simple questions will be answered by the NSave Support Specialist. If you desire, an NSave Support Specialist will install this product for you for a $10 charge. Contact the NSave Support Specialist at 402-472-6843. 1. Minimum System Requirements for CPP version 3.7.0. In order to use CPP, you will need a computer that meets the following requirements: A 1 GHZ+ x86-64 CPU running, 2.6.13 or newer 250 MB of available disk space. 1 GB of memory. A connection to UNL s computer network. 2. Begin CPP Installation A. Using Mozilla Firefox go to the URL address: http://nsave.unl.edu/selfinstall. Click on the Linux Installer. If you are using a different browser and need assistance in downloading the installation program contact the NSave Support Specialist at 402-472-6843. B. Select to save the file instead of opening. 3

C. Once you have downloaded the installer you will need to unzip the file. From a terminal window navigate to the directory where your download files are, you will see a file called CrashPlanPROe_Linux.tgz. Run the following command tar xzvf CPPLinux-Installer.tgz. D. Once the files are extracted you will need to run the installer. Type in the command: sh./install.sh E. A welcome message will appear. You will be prompted to enter to continue with the install. You may or may not get a message about what account is running the installer depending on how you logged into the computer. You can switch users at this command if you choose to. 4

F. You will have to read the end user license agreement and agree to it before the installation will begin. G. After agreeing to the EULA a series of prompts will appear regarding where to install CrashPlan. Select the defaults unless you want different directories selected. There will be a selection summary of your choices. If the selections are correct answer y to continue. 5

H. The install will begin. You will be prompted to press enter to complete the installation. I. You will want CrashPlan to start after the installation so answer y at the prompt 6

J. The Create account window will open. You will need to enter your First Name, Last Name, and your myunl/active Directory username and password. 3. You are Finished. You have now successfully completed the installation of CPP. 4. Important Note. As part of your NSave participation, you have been added to an NSave electronic mailing list.through this mailing list, Information Services will be able to update you regarding issues or changes to the NSave Service. 7

Backing Up Your Computer A. Your computer will automatically backup once a day. If you want to back up a certain file (s) manually you will need to open the CPP program. To open the program click on the CPP icon on the desktop. B. When the program opens you will be at the Backup window. To back up a certain directory or file(s) click on Change and expand the arrow next to the hard drive name and you will see a list of the directories and file(s) on the drive. 8

C. Once you find the directory or file(s) you want to backup click in the box in front of it so it is selected. The program will start scanning for those files and then run the backup. When the backup is complete you will need to change the selection backup to the local hard drive (s) and Save the change. So when your daily scheduled backup runs it backs up every directory and file(s) on your computer. 9

Restoring Files to Your Computer The following examples step you through the most common way of restoring a few files. If you don t feel comfortable restoring the files yourself, or need to restore as many files as possible (perhaps your hard drive went bad), contact the NSave Support Specialist at (402) 472-6843. A. Click on the CrashPlanPro icon in your system tray or from the hard drive select the Applications folder then the CPP icon. B. The CPP program will open and you will be at the Backup window, click on Restore below Backup C. There will be a directory tree of your hard drive. Expand the arrow next to the name of the hard drive and navigate to the directory or file(s) you want to restore. Once you find what you want to restore click in the box in front of them so they are selected. 10

D. If you do not know where the file(s) is located you can search for the file by name. Type in the name and then click on the search icon to start the search. When the file(s) is found select the ones to restore by clicking in the box in front of them so they are selected. E. To start the restore you will need to select what version you want to restore, where you want to restore the file(s) to and also if you want to rename the file. 11

F. To select an older version click on most recent. A window will open a calendar so you can select the date you want the file(s) restored from. G. Once you have selected your options click on Restore to start the process. 12

Settings The Settings menu allows you to make configuration changes to the CPP software. There should be nothing in this menu you should need to change. Most of the configuration is done on the NSaver server and unless a problem arises the defaults will work. If you want to make changes please consult the NSave Support Specialist at 472-6843 or email nsave@unl.edu. 13

History The History window is the log file of the events that have happened in CPP. You will only need to excess this window if you are having a problem with the CPP software. 14

Destinations The Destinations window allows you to change where you want the backup to backup to. The only time you would use this feature is if you are running CPP on more than one computer or you have a remote drive attached to your computer. You will NOT make any changes to this screen. You will only be backing up your computer to the CPP server. This will insure your data is saved to the CPP servers and will always be available for restores. 15
