2009 MASTER PLAN/PROGRESS REPORT Academic Program: School Counseling, M.Ed Person Responsible: Dr. Christine Anthony Date Submitted: May 22, 2009 Mission: The Master of Education in School Counseling endeavors to prepare its graduates to work in school settings, to assist administrative functions appropriate to that setting, to improve the lives of students and their families at all grade levels, and to demonstrate knowledge and positive dispositions regarding ethical responsibility. Students are also prepared to pursue a doctorate degree in counseling or related fields. It is our goal to provide graduates with the resources and knowledge needed to facilitate positive change in individuals and institutions through excellence in teaching, creative scholarly activity and action research in school counseling. Graduate students receive a specific School Counseling curriculum consisting of 36 credit hours with emphasis in: educational leadership and professionalism and ethical responsibility critical thinking skills analysis of the global community; the development of sound judgment in a multicultural society counseling skills, consultation, collaboration effective oral, written, and technological communication school and community service Graduate students will then be encouraged to continue refining their school counseling skills by pursuing an additional 30 graduate hours in counseling related course work. This +30 will contribute to the graduate student s professional development, aid in promoting expertise in specific counseling areas especially valuable for students who are seeking licensure. Additionally, in most parishes it will result in a salary increase. Institutional Mission Reference: School counseling students at McNeese State University will become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and knowledgeable professionals who possess an understanding and appreciation of the global community. This is accomplished through excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, research, and field experience within the school community. The collegiate and K-12 school environments will combine to promote critical thinking skills, effective communication, sound professional judgment, and educational leadership as it relates to the greater good of communities, schools, families and individuals. Faculty involved in the School Counseling program conduct annual reviews to evaluate students progress and to identify potential areas of change within the program. Course syllabi detail the standards which must be met for satisfactory progress students must satisfactorily completion recorded and evaluated counseling sessions before they are admitted to candidacy. Teaching effectiveness is evaluated each semester via student evaluations of instruction, and instructors use these evaluations to make modifications to course structure, content, and delivery. Additionally, data are collected to assess the School Counseling program s success in meeting its goals; sources of data include discussions with practicum supervisors, field supervisors and informal contact with graduates. Student Learning Outcome 1: Graduate students will apply critical thinking in academic and professional environments. Expected Level of Achievement At least 90% of school counseling students pass the National School Counseling Exam on first take. 100% of school counseling students will receive a satisfactory or better rating on the construction and implementation of an Action research project. The project will be based on needs assessment and conducted at their practicum or internship school site and will consist of a pretest, implementation of the project, and a posttest. Actual Data From Assessment Spring 2009 NSCE: 100% pass rate of first time test takers in fall of 2008 and spring of 2009. Spring 2009: COUN 687: School Counseling Practicum Spring 2009: COUN 697: School Counseling Internship 100% of school counseling students received a satisfactory or better rating on the construction and implementation of an Action research project. The project will be based on needs assessment. It will be conducted at their practicum or internship school site and will consist of a pretest, implementation of the project, and a posttest. Spring 2009: Crisis Management Plans: COUN 684 Summer 2009: Crisis Management Plans: COUN 684 100% of school counseling students received satisfactory or above ratings on their Crisis Management Plans School Counseling Agenda/Schedules, and School Counseling Calendars. Actions/Decisions D Faculty will review the 3 lowest test categories on the NSCE for each graduate and target these areas for in appropriate courses. R Curriculum revisions will progress through the 2009 academic year. D Faculty will implement the use of concept mapping to improve students abilities to comprehend, analyze, and critically evaluate concept knowledge. D Faculty will review Action research projects and determine specific ways to improve and expand the project based on students submissions. D Faculty will identify ways to incorporate additional problem-solving and decision making exercises into the school counseling agenda/schedule, and calendar. D The mental health of high-risk students, warning signs, preventative strategies and topics of concern will be added to the appropriate course curriculum based on data from armed attacks at other schools and universities. D Faculty will incorporate prevention strategies, and problem-solving and decision making exercises that address crisis situations in school environments, as well as the effective communication strategies in crisis situations. Course curriculum will include interviews, discussion with local school counselors, and cooperative group learning, discussion, and role play methodologies. Actual Data From Assessment Spring 2009: COUN 605: Counseling Theories and Spring 2009: COUN 637: Ethics and Professional Orientation satisfactory or better rating on embedded midterm and final exam essay questions concerning multicultural issues related to gender, traditions, customs, beliefs and legal rights. Spring 2009: COUN 684: Principles and Administration in School Counseling satisfactory or better rating on multimedia guidance counseling lesson presentations with accommodations and modifications for a diverse school population. Students explored the issue of bullying and school violence and the relationship of these issues to a diverse school population. Students used embedded technology consisting of U-TUBE videos on Bullying. Spring 2009: COUN 687: School Counseling Practicum Spring 2009: COUN 697: School Counseling Internship satisfactory or better rating on video taped counseling sessions, scholarly journal article reviews, and chapter outlines, which included data on issues in multicultural school environments. Summer 2009: COUN 640: Career Counseling At least 90% of school counseling students are projected to achieve a satisfactory or better rating on Career Paths multimedia class presentations. These presentations include accommodations and considerations for career counseling for minority and diverse populations. At least 90% of school counseling students will become familiar with major theories of cultural diversity and perspectives on the American culture in relation to the rest of the world. Spring 2009: COUN 605 Counseling Theories 100% of graduate students will perform at a satisfactory level on video taped counseling sessions. Fall 2009: COUN 631 Group Counseling students will achieve a satisfactory or better rating on information relating to group structure, group communication, and personal introspection and on the reporting of thoughts, feelings, and insights while participating in a group. These objectives will be assessed through embedded test questions from the midterm and final exams, participation in class activities, evaluated role playing, and on the quality of insights and observations reported in students journals. These objectives were assessed through embedded test questions from the midterm and final exams, observed participation in class activities and role playing, and from the quality of insights and observations reported in students journals. Actions/Decisions D Faculty will discuss the overall effectiveness of videotaped counseling sessions, the need for any additional writing assignments, and the need for additional written feedback from site supervisors. D Faculty will discuss the option of gathering additional feedback from employers of graduates. Faculty may also review any form(s) used for this purpose to optimize their ease-of-use and efficiency. Fall 2009: COUN 600: Techniques in Counseling Fall 2009: COUN 605: Counseling Skills satisfactory or better rating on embedded midterm and final exam questions, and class activities and discussions related to text readings and video excerpts of various counseling techniques and skills.
