1 Iowa State University Department of Psychology Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program Requirements (October, 2006) The APA accredited Counseling Psychology Program is one of several areas of doctoral study offered by the Psychology Department. The Counseling Program shares with the other doctoral programs in the Department emphases upon study and research in the science of Psychology. In addition to departmental core courses and research requirements, the Counseling Program exposes the student to the specialty area of Counseling Psychology through the following required and recommended courses, and required counseling practica and internship. These requirements are in effect for all students who as of October 01, 2006, do not have an advisory committee approved M.S. program of study and for all students who enter the program in 2007 or later. I. Fulfillment of all Graduate College Ph.D. requirements as delineated in the Iowa State University Catalog and the Graduate College s Graduate Student Handbook; II. Completion of all Psychology Department doctoral degree requirements in research and core courses, an M.S. thesis, and a Ph.D. dissertation. These requirements, as well as expectations for timely completion of research endeavors, are described in the Psychology Department s document, Graduate Education In Psychology Handbook, Fall Counseling psychology students will take Psychology 508-Research Methods In Applied Psychology, as the designated core course in research methods. III. The following required and recommended courses, seminars and practica, as well as a calendar year internship, are designed to foster the development of knowledge and competencies in Counseling Psychology. A. Required Counseling and Related Basic Core Courses The required courses, as listed below, are congruent with departmental core course requirements. Specifically, Psychology 542 and 621 can also be used to fulfill the department core course requirement in Applied Psychology (Core Course Group V), and Psychology 561 can be used to fulfill the core requirement in Individual Behavior (Core Group IV). The student must complete 24 semester hours as follows. Psych 561 Psychopathology and Behavior Deviations 3

2 Psych. 592A Seminar in Supervision 3 Psych 592A Seminar: Multicultural Counseling 3 Psych 592 M Seminar: Professional Issues and Ethics 3 Psych 621 Psychological Counseling: Theory and Process 3 Psych 621L Techniques in Counseling 3 Psych 623 Vocational Behavior 3 Psych 626 Group Counseling 3 Counseling Psychology Program Department Core Course Requirements To meet APA accreditation requirements and to optimally prepare for licensure, students must also complete, on a graded basis, at least one department core course from each of the following core groups, a total of nine (9) semester hours as follows: Core Group I-Biological Bases of Behavior (Psych 512, 517, 519) Core Group II-Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior (Psych 514, 516, HDFS 631) Core Group III- Social Bases of Behavior (Psych 580, 581) Note that the counseling course requirements, as stated above on page one, also require completion of Psychology 561 a core course in Group IV-Individual Behavior. Thus, the program s requirements ensure that counseling psychology students will have met the specified four core course group requirements delineated in the licensure eligibility requirements of all states. B. Required Assessment Courses and Practicum The student must complete eight (8) credits from the following list and may wish to complete other related measurement courses or assessment related practicum experiences. 3 AND one of the following testing practicum offerings Psych 544B Practicum in Assessment: 2 Individual Tests-Children Psych 544C Practicum in Assessment: Testing Adults 2 Note: Psych 544A, B and C require prior completion of, or concurrent enrollment in Psych 542. C. Required Counseling Practica The student must complete at least five semesters of required practica (a minimum of 15 credits) and fulfill Counseling Psychology Program clock hour requirements.* All clock hours of experience gained in Psych 691A, B, C, E and F count toward fulfillment of total practicum clock hour requirements. Psych 691A Practicum in Psychology: Beginning Counseling 3 AND four semesters (12 semester hours of individual focused counseling, Psych 691B and 691F, indicated as follows) Psych 691B Practicum in Psychology: Intermediate Counseling 6 (two semesters) Psych 691F Practicum in Psychology: Advanced Counseling 6 (two semesters) With the exception of unusual circumstances, as assessed by the counseling faculty, all students will complete Psychology 691B for two semesters (6 semester hours) at the Student Counseling Service (SCS). Typically students will also complete two additional semesters (6 semester hours) of Psychology 691F at the same site (SCS). However, some students with the permission of the counseling faculty and consistent with their career goals, may pursue Psychology 691F at off-campus sites after successful completion of two semesters of Psychology 691B. In addition, most students complete additional advanced practicum (Psychology 691F) beyond the two semester minimum requirement. Many students, in addition to the above practicum, also choose to complete group counseling practicum Psych 691E Practicum in Psychology: Group Counseling 3

4 *NOTE: The Counseling Psychology Program requires the doctoral student to complete a minimum of 1000 clock hours of on-site practicum experience prior to beginning an internship. At least 400 hours of the total 1000 hours must be in direct service (counseling and assessment) experience, and at least 150 hours must be in formally scheduled supervision predominately individual rather than group supervision. Students in this program typically exceed the minimal required number of practicum clock hours with many students completing 1200 or more total clock hours of pre-internship practica. While there is keen national competition for quality APA approved internships, students from this program have been quite successful in national internship selection and match processes, attributable in part to their acquisition of diverse, quality practica in excess of Counseling Program specified minimal hour requirements. D. Counseling Psychology Seminars The doctoral program requires completion of four (4) counseling seminars. As specified above in the basic counseling course requirements, Psychology 592A- Seminar in Supervision (3 semester hours), Psychology 592A-Seminar: Multicultural Counseling (3 semester hours), and Psychology 592M- Professional Issues and Ethics (3 semester hours), are three of the four required seminars. Typically, the student will complete one counseling seminar per year, and the student will choose one additional seminar from among alternate year offerings such as: Course/Seminar Titles Credits Psych 592A-Introduction to Neuropsychological Screening 3 Psych 592A-Close Personal Relationships 3 Psych 592A-Process and Outcome Research in Counseling 3. E. Recommended Counseling Related Courses The student is strongly encouraged to consider one or several of the following courses, an additional 3-9 semester hours. 5 Psych 560 Advanced Personality 3 Psych 601 History of Psychology 3 Note. Some state licensure laws may require completion of Psychology 601 in order to be eligible for licensure application. However, that determination is made on a state-by-state basis. Thus, it is prudent to check specific state licensure codes of interest to you about this matter when planning your doctoral program of study. F. Required Internship (Psychology 697) A calendar year, 12-month, full-time professional psychology internship year, in a setting approved by the counseling faculty, is required. Successful completion of an APA-approved internship in a counseling center, hospital, mental health clinic, or related agency is the usual manner in which this requirement is fulfilled. To be eligible to apply for internship the student must have completed the following sequence of requirements: have both a Graduate College approved doctoral advisory committee and a Ph.D. Program of Study, have passed the department written preliminary examination, and have passed the Graduate College oral exam (doctoral candidacy exam), which for counseling psychology students is the presentation of a dissertation proposal. Thus, being a doctoral candidate and having a committee approved dissertation proposal are prerequisites for internship application. In addition, the student who is eligible for internship application will have completed all courses and seminars before the beginning the internship year. The student will enroll in Psychology 697-Internship in Counseling Psychology, for R credit, for three consecutive semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer) during the internship year.
