1 COUN N: SUPERVISED EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOL COUNSELING Northwestern State University 1. Identification of Course 1.1. COUN 5570: Supervised Experience in School Counseling (3-1-5) 3 credit hours; A grade of B or better must be earned in prerequisite courses (COUN 5000, 5530, 5540, 5580, and EPSY 5460); students must successfully complete the application process for practicum the semester prior to enrolling in COUN Textbook and/or Supplementary Materials Readings as assigned by instructor. PASS-Port Policy: 2. Course Description Each student must upload assigned artifacts to PASS-Port as a required components of this class. Since all students are required to maintain a current PASS-Port subscription, if all required field experiences and artifacts are not completed and entered into PASS-Port by the due date, the candidate will receive a grade of F in the course regardless of other grades Catalog Description of Course Opportunity to practice and demonstrate competency in the practical application and integration of principles and methods studied in the training program in a school setting. 1
2 2.2. Justification/Rationale of Course 3. Goals and Objectives 3.1. Goals This course is intended to provide students the opportunity to apply theory and further the development of their counseling skills under supervision. Students will have the opportunity to counsel clients from diverse backgrounds. Pursuant to the College of Education conceptual framework, Models for Learning, the goals is to prepare candidates in education with abilities to model creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and responsibility-taking dispositions. The goals for this course are to provide opportunities for students to employ critical thinking skills in the assessment and application of counseling skills and theories in a school setting. Students learn to assume responsibility for facilitating their own personal and professional growth and development and that of the clients they serve. Students actively engage in problem solving and decision making as critical components of the counseling process Objectives The objectives of the course are to: Allow the student to gain supervised experience in individual and group interactions with clients (including techniques and theoretical applications appropriate in a diverse society) Introduce students to a variety of professional activities and roles associated with counseling, including ethical responsibilities Provide opportunities for problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking through the use of professional resources, such as appraisal instruments, technology, research literature, etc Provide experiences commensurate with state and national licensure and certification requirements Encourage students to explore personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as values and beliefs, as they relate to the practice of counseling. 2

Student Activities and Experiences Disability Policy: It is the policy of NSU to accommodate students with disabilities, pursuant to federal law, state law, and the University's commitment to equal educational opportunities. Any student with a disability who needs accommodation, for example, in seating placement or in arrangements for examinations, should inform the instructor at the beginning of the course. Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Office of Disability Support, which is located in Student Union, Room 240-A, telephone NSU Classroom Civility Statement: Each Northwestern State University student is encouraged to help create an environment that promotes learning, dignity, and mutual respect for everyone in the learning environment. Students who speak at inappropriate times, take frequent breaks, interrupt the class by coming to class late or leaving early, engage in loud or distracting behaviors, use cell phones or pagers (other noise-making devices like watches with alarms), listen to headphones/cds, play with computers or hand held games, use inappropriate language, are verbally abusive, display defiance or disrespect to others, or behave aggressively toward others during the class period may be asked to leave the class and subjected to disciplinary action under the Northwestern State University Student Code of Conduct and Sanctions (Article VII Sanctions). The instructor of a course may deem additional behaviors or actions inappropriate; these actions or behaviors will be outlined in the course syllabus. Copies of the infractions and sanctions are available on the NSU web site at: Definition of Diversity: Today members of our university Community are more likely to experience differences among people. Northwestern State University defines diversity as differences in age, gender, religion, language, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, exceptionalities, and geographic background. In our mission to acknowledge our differences, we also hope to realize our commonalities. 4.1 Assignments/Tasks Student File Materials supplied by the student. File will be kept by instructor. Each student will have a personal file. This file should contain the following: Application for Practicum (due at beginning of semester) Proof of Liability Insurance (due at beginning of semester 3
4 Completed Counseling Logs (due at end of semester) Completed Student Evaluations (due at mid-term and at end of semester) The student file must be complete at the end of practicum in order to receive a grade. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Counseling Logs Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of direct client contact and 60 hours of indirect contact (100 total clock hours). Direct client contact includes individual and group counseling, as well as consultation with parents, teachers, administrators, and direct observation and assessment of students. Direct client contact hours must be audio or videotaped (a minimum of one session per week must be videotaped). Each student is required to keep an updated log of all counseling activity (direct and indirect contact) and related activities (see attached forms). Logs will be updated with the instructor at weekly supervision meetings. Completed counseling logs should be filed in the student file at the end of the semester. (DM, RT) Client Files All clients must be assigned a client identification number for confidentiality. Counselors are responsible for assigning a code number in the Master Client List and using only that number on all paperwork. Students are required to set up and maintain a file on each client seen in practicum. Files are to be kept in a locked carrying case that has been preapproved by the instructor. File work must be completed in a confidential setting and in a timely manner (NO PAPER WORK DURING CLASS HOURS). All files must be complete at the end of the semester in order to earn a grade in practicum. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Client files should include: Consent Form--consent forms must be signed by all adult clients and under-aged clients (signed by parent or legal guardian) at sites where appropriate. Conceptualization Notes--counselors should complete and file brief process notes following each counseling session. Group Proposal Form counselors will complete this form prior to the establishment of a group. 4
5 Tapes Group Conceptualization Notes counselors will complete this form after each group session. Curriculum Lesson Plan counselors will develop a curriculum lesson plan during the semester. Termination Form--a report discussing the results of counseling and summarizing the client's status at termination is to be completed at the conclusion of counseling. This form is necessary for small groups and for any client seen more than 4 times. All counseling sessions must be audio or videotaped (at least one session per week should be videotaped). Students should turn in tapes to the instructor weekly in order to receive timely feedback. Included with tapes should be the tape critique and the conceptualization form. Tapes should be erased before the next use. Each tape should be identified with counselor name, client identification number, and the date of the session. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Written Evaluation of Counseling/Supervision Experience At the end of the semester, students are to turn in an evaluation of the practicum experience. This evaluation should be a combination of personal reflections, as well as professional insights. The counselor should detail thoughts and feelings about client contact, as well as class experiences, supervision, and critical incidents of the counselor's development. In addition, counselors should discuss what they have learned about counseling and themselves as a result of this experience and future goals for professional development. This evaluation should be a minimum of two pages. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Articles/Presentation Students are required to review 10 articles and develop an annotated bibliography for each (the annotated bibliography will have the article reference in APA format, one paragraph summary of the article, and one paragraph exploring how this information might be used in the school setting. For the purposes of this practicum, students should focus their readings in areas of concern--a special population client (e.g., child abuse, attention deficit disorder, eating disorder, behavior disorder). Students will provide a typed copy of these annotated bibliographies to fellow students and the instructor. Each student will also make a brief presentation about the special population clients in class (counseling issues and techniques). (C/CT, PS, DM, RT 5
6 5. Content Outline 5.1. Outline Supervision and Evaluation Students are expected to come prepared for weekly supervision. Selfevaluation is a critical component in the overall supervision process. Students should review counseling tapes, identify strengths, weaknesses and problematic situations, and reflect on professional and personal growth. In addition to the instructor, an on-site supervisor will supervise students. Students will be formally evaluated at mid-semester and at the end of the semester by site supervisors and instructor. Students will also complete a self-evaluation at mid-semester and at the end of the semester. Ongoing evaluation will be initiated in individual weekly group supervision sessions. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Clinical and/or Field-Based Experiences This course is primarily a clinical course; therefore, all assignments listed above describe the clinical requirements as well as class requirements of the course. Students must keep current and be responsible for all items listed in the syllabus. All clinical experiences will be conducted in a school setting with an on-site supervisor available for immediate consultation. (C/CT, PS, DM, RT) Service Learning Students are expected to engage in service-learning activities for at least one hour per week. These activities can include conducting educational sessions, large group guidance, and/or creating products that school counselors can use to implement comprehensive, developmental school counseling plans. Personal reflections on the experience should be included in the internship journal. Evaluation Policies General University attendance and grading policies are located in the current General Catalog under the heading of Academic Regulations. Policies of this course are in compliance with University regulations Attendance and Class Participation Active participation in all class meetings is necessary because of the experiential nature of this class. Unexcused absences will result in a grade reduction. Involvement in class will include the presentation of client cases, discussions of counseling experiences, the practicing of counseling techniques, and the observation and critique of fellow students. Students are encouraged to bring to class for discussion critical incidents from their counseling interviews Grading Grades will be determined on the basis of all requirements outlined above under Assignments. The grade will be determined based on the following percentages: 7
