Getting Started with Citrix Remote Connectivity Service What is Citrix? In the simplest of terms, Citrix is a client/server application that enables you to access many of the same programs from home that you can access on the network in the Marshall labs. You can use Microsoft s Windows Explorer as the client application, and you ll also need a helper application called a plug-in. You can download the free plug-in from the Citrix web site. This document will give instructions for downloading and installing the client program and for using Citrix access service on your computer. A. Getting the Client Program (you must have this to use Citrix). You will need to download and install the free client software. For additional help, see the screen prints at the end of this document. 1. Please go to the Citrix web site http://www.citrix.com/site/ss/downloads/details.asp?did=2755&downloadid=13028&pid= 186 and complete the download process using these steps: 2. Find Version 8.0 English.exe (executable) and click on the Get Software link. 3. At some point in download and installation process, you will be asked to read the license agreement and click either yes or no. If you select no, the process will be terminated. 4. Click the Download Here link and select Save to put this program on your computer. 5. Select a drive and folder location for the download file storage. Make a note of where you are storing the file. It s recommended that you can create a new folder under your Program Files folder and name it Citrix. Click Save. 6. Depending on your access to the web, it may take several minutes for the download to complete. You can then close your windows to the Citrix website. 7. After the download is complete, click your desktop Start > Run and enter the name of the file you downloaded. If it doesn t show in the field, use the Browse button and select it from the file where you stored it above. It should be similar to Ica32t.exe. 8. Continue through Citrix ICA Windows Client Install to complete the installation. 9. Re-start your computer after the install. You can then use the instructions and the links below to access the Marshall Citrix server. B. Using the Marshall server for Citrix access Once you have the plug-in/client software installed in your equipment, you do not need to do that again. You can then use the Marshall server to launch an active Citrix session and access accounting programs. The access is available at either http://www-marshall.usc.edu/desktop.html or http://www-marshall.usc.edu/desktop.ica (You will need to have Internet Explorer open first to use these links.) You can add this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks or create a desktop shortcut for 1-clickeasy return to launching a session. In newer Windows systems, you can create a desktop icon by: 1. Right click on an empty area of your desktop screen. 2. Select New > Create Shortcut. 3. Copy and Paste either of the above desktop addresses into the Command Line field. 4. Complete the process as instructed. 5. Right click on the icon and select Rename to give it a name of your choice. Note: The web links used here are all active in June 2004. If you are unable to use any links, please contact Dee Davidson at dgd@marshall.usc.edu GettingStarted with Citrix_Summer_ 04.doc 5/28/2004 Page 1 of 1 University of Southern California 2004

C. Logging into Citrix. You are now ready to use your client to connect to the server application. 1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer if it is not already running. 2. Connect to the Marshall Citrix server using your desktop icon or using either http://www-marshall.usc.edu/desktop.html or http://www-marshall.usc.edu/desktop.ica (To link from this document, please open Internet Explorer first.) 3. You are now starting a Windows NT session on the Citrix server. The following steps will take place: a) A black, blank window will open on your screen, b) You will be asked to log in with a User Name and Password (your instructor will provide these). c) If you receive a message A Server Application is trying to access your local client files click to allow Full Access and Never ask for this application again. The system will access your machine for a moment, and then continue the Citrix log in process. d) A short logon script will play. You may need to hit the Enter key if the script pauses for more than a moment. e) The screen will go blank. After a short pause, a Start button will appear at the bottom left of the Citrix screen. If you don t see the Start button on the Citrix screen, scroll down using the Citrix screen scroll bar on the right. You should now be able to see both the Citrix Start button and, below it at the very bottom left, the Windows Start button. When you click on the Citrix Start button, it will display a Terminal Server vertical selection list. GettingStarted with Citrix_Summer_ 04.doc 5/28/2004 2 University of Southern California 2004

D. Using the Citrix Session 1. You are now looking at a Windows NT screen, which is running on the Citrix server. Click on Programs on the Citrix Terminal Server vertical selection list. You will see the applications that are available. Starting one of those applications is exactly like starting one in the lab. Note: You are using 3 layers of windows: your program, within Citrix, within Internet Explorer. Take care to use the appropriate menu bar, tool bar and scroll bar for each window. 2. It is important that you sign off of the server once you have finished using Citrix. We have a limited number of ports available. If you do not sign off, you may tie up that port for a period longer than necessary. See Ending Your Session instructions below. E. Printing while in Citrix. If you want to print reports while using the Citrix remote access, you will need the Acrobat Reader application installed on the client machine and a personal-use diskette or other storage device to save reports externally. Most, if not all, programs will allow printing following these steps: 1. Insert a diskette in your A: drive (or connect a USB port storage device. If you are using a USB device, substitute your external drive letter in the instructions below where the A: drive is noted). 2. Following the program s normal print routine, print the report to the screen. 3. Review the report and if printing is desired, click File > Print. 4. The Print to Acrobat PDF Writer screen opens. Click OK. 5. The Save PDF File As screen will open. 6. Use the Up One Level button to find the A: $on Client (A):. Select it into the Save In field. Change the name of the file, if desired. Make sure the Save as Type is PDF. 7. Uncheck the View PDF File box. (You don t need to view it again). 8. Click Save. 9. If you receive a message You don t have permission., exit your program and log out of Citrix. Log into Citrix again. You will receive a message A Server Application is trying to access your local client files. Click to allow Full Access and Never ask again for this application. The system will access the A: drive for a few moments. Continue the Citrix log in process and open your program. Go to the report selection again. Repeat the steps above from the beginning. The report should now save to your external drive file. 10. Open Windows Explorer and open the report file on your diskette in the A: drive. Acrobat Reader will open the report on your screen. Click the printer icon to begin printing. Be sure Print as Image box is checked. F. Ending your session on the Citrix Server. It is very important that you end your Citrix session in much the same way you would shut down your computer. When you are finished: 1. Close the application you are in using File > Close, or File > Exit. (Be sure you are using the menu bar in the application program, not the Citrix and not the Windows menus.) 2. Click the Citrix Start button and select Logoff. (Be sure you are using the Citrix Start button, not Windows.) 3. You will see the message, This will end your NT session. Then select OK.
