Homeland Security Education - Background Academia has a history of supporting national efforts WWII Manhattan Project Cold War National Security Affairs, Area Studies, Language Programs No HLS/HLD Academic Programs Prior to 9/11 New agencies and policies spawned academic requirements and academic action Department of Homeland Security DHS National Preparedness Directorate, FEMA (formerly Grants and Training) opted for the Naval Postgraduate School Research Centers of Excellence Program Homeland Security Academy and numerous new efforts by CLO Department of Defense (US Northern Command) University of Colorado graduate level certificate program Developed the Homeland Security/Defense Education Consortium or HSDEC 2

The Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama (Office for Domestic Preparedness, Department of Homeland Security) estimates that there are more than 11 million emergency responders and other personnel in this country that would need training to deal with terrorist incidents. RECENT DENVER POST ARTICLE - Northrop Grumman, the aerospace and defense conglomerate, is expected to expand its Aurora campus by hiring 350 employees to work on about 30 homeland security-related contracts. Annual salaries will average $80,000. 12
