1 Salem Community College Course Syllabus Section I Course Title: Principles of Emergency Management Course Code: EME101 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Credits: 3 Course Description: This is a three credit course introducing the student with an overview of the skills needed at the local, state, and national level for emergency management operations involving all hazards. This class is appropriate for business, industry, firefighters, emergency managers, emergency medical services, police and other interested parties. Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENG 98 if required. Co-requisite: Place in College Curriculum: EME 101 is a required program course for students pursuing the A.A. degree in Emergency Management. In addition EME 101 can be utilized as a three credit open elective by students matriculated in other programs of study at SCC. Date of Last Revision: Dec. 2008

Course Performance Objective #3: Describe the disciplines of emergency management mitigation. 1. describe the variety of mitigation tools available to planners. 2. list impediments to mitigation. 3. describe mitigation programs and methods. Course Performance Objective #4: Describe the disciplines of emergency management response.

Course Performance Objective #6: Explain the disciplines of emergency management preparedness. 1. explain why prepaedness is the building block of emergency management. 2. differentiate between mitigation and preparedness. 3. explain why evacuation planning is important. 4. list the types of exercises. Course Performance Objective #7. Explain the disciplines of emergency management communications.

Describe international disaster management. 1. list the important issues that influence the management of international disasters. 2. define the components of United Nations disaster response. Explain the terrorist threat. 1. describe the government response to 9/ explain how the department of homeland security was formed. 3. describe how hurricane Katrina and terrorism changed FEMA. 4. summarize the past and future of emergency management. 5. describe the new FEMA. General Education Requirements: EM 101 covers the following general education goals: Critical thinking and problem solving, science and technology, society and human behavior, historical perspective, information literacy. Outcomes Assessment: A college-wide outcome assessment program has been put into place to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the curriculum and programs at Salem Community College. As part of this assessment
6 program, the learning outcomes for this course will be assessed. Assessment methods may include tests, quizzes, papers, reports, projects and other instruments. Copies of all outcomes assessments are available in an electronic assessment bank maintained by the Institutional Research and Planning Office. Course Activities: Lecture and class participation as well as in class assignments stressing cooperative learning, are major means of instruction. Course Requirements and Means of Evaluation: Please refer to the instructor s syllabus addendum ( to be distributed in class) for specific information regarding the course requirements and means of evaluation. Attendance Policy: Regular and prompt attendance in all classes is expected of students. Students absent from class for any reason are responsible for making up any missed work. Faculty members establish an attendance policy for each course and it is the student s responsibility to honor and comply with the policy. Academic Honesty Policy: Students found to have committed an act of academic dishonesty may be subject to failure of this course, academic probation, and/ or suspension from the college.
