Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between the CAPM and PMP exams? The CAPM exam is based on the entire contents of the PMBOK Guide, so the only source of information you need to memorize and understand is the PMBOK Guide. CAPM questions will be straight forward and test knowledge and awareness, but not necessarily application of the practices, tools and techniques captured in the PMBOK Guide. There should be no situational type questions in the CAPM exam. CAPM candidates will need to know all the formulae but the related questions will be straightforward. CAPM candidates will not be tested on Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The PMP exam is based on the results of a role delineation study that captures the abilities that a competent project manager should be able to demonstrate. PMI have produced a PMP Examination Content Outline document that defines what needs to be mastered. The PMBOK Guide is a great document to use as the foundation for your studies, along with the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The PMP Exam questions will be situational and lengthy. They will be designed to test your knowledge and catch you out! Are there any pro s or con s of siting the paper based test vs. the computer based test? The exam process itself is fairly similar. Some people do the paper-based test (PBT) because they like to flick forward and back through the exam when they like they like the idea of a physical paper. But this is also possible via the electronic exam you just need to go back to the digital index and choose where you want to go. With the computer based test (CBT), you can mark questions to go-back to, and also re-visit any questions you may have skipped during your first run through. As the paper based exam is sat by a group of people all at the same time, there is that opportunity to debrief after the exam and exchange thoughts/experiences with each other some people like that. The only real difference is that with the computer based test, you walk out of the room and you will know whether you have passed the exam or not. With the paper-based exam, you need to wait between 2-8 weeks for your results When is PMP or CAPM able to be sat in New Zealand? Auckland: Both PMP and CAPM exams are offered as Computer based tests (CBT) in Auckland. These can be booked on almost any date throughout the year at a number of testing centres across the city. Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin: The PMP exam is only offered as a paper based tests (PBT) in these three cities. To find the PBT exams dates for both PMP and CAPM, please search for prometric pbt exam dates via Google. You should find a PDF showing when and when the PBT exams are being held. Computer based tests (CBT) for CAPM can be booked on almost any date throughout the year at a number of testing centres across the three cities. What if I miss the application deadline? If you fail to register for your exam, pay the booking fee, and book in the exam before the cut-off date, then you will not be able to sit the exam. You will need to apply for the next available exam. Would my best option be to start with the CAPM and then apply for the PMP? CAPM is not a pre-requisite for PMP, it is a separate certification aimed at those who do not have the experience required for PMP. Sit whichever exam you meet the eligibility requirements for. Can PMINZ recommend a study guide Mulcahy, Crowe, Whitaker, something else? No, PMINZ cannot recommend one book over another. Previous participants have used all of the above to their advantage. We suggest you use a study guide to support your learnings the more you read the more you will knoiw! What previous education is applicable for my exam application? Any training related to project management (project quality, scope, schedule, budget, human resources, communications, risk, procurement, or integration) will count towards the formal education requirement. The study group can provide a number of hours towards your PMI education we meet for 1.5hours each week for 15 weeks and you can count these hours up until you submit you exam application. You will need look elsewhere for extra hours if you need them. Self-study and attending local branch meetings are not counted (unless the branch meeting was a solid hour of learning a PM concept). How is the CPN fee of $60 paid? Once you sign-up for the CPN, you will receive an invoice from PMINZ. This will contain instructions for payment into the nominated bank account. Please see the PMI website for more FAQs; http://www.pmi.org/certification/certification-faq.aspx
