Objectives The LL.M. is designed for those who seek a deeper understanding of international criminal law and crime prevention, their implementation and the activities of international organizations and tribunals in this area. The program will offer students a combination of academic training and practical experience in an unparalleled setting at the UN Campus in Torino (Italy). Its aim is to provide an indepth knowledge of the theoretical and practical international instruments and tools for the prevention and punishment of international and transnational crimes as well as serious crimes such as acts of terrorism or trafficking in persons. 2. Methodology The LL.M. will emphasize the integration of theory and practice as well as active interaction between participants, tutors and lecturers. It will be composed of theoretical lectures, tutorials, seminars, participants presentations, mock trials and moot courts. A first elearning module will take place from 16 November 2009 to 22 January 2010. This module will provide the participants with a preliminary and homogeneous background. The distance learning activities are followed by an on-campus module from 1 February to 10 July 2010. This period will be concluded by the discussion of the diploma thesis which will take place between 6-9 July 2010. The moot court competition will be organized in cooperation with international organizations and forensic institutions, with the objective of providing participants with a complete and operative knowledge of the issues. Intermediate exams will be held approximately every two months. A final research paper must be submitted in July. The LL.M. will be implemented in close connection with the international institutions based in Torino and other entities of the United Nations System. The LL.M. will be taught in English.

3. Course Content The programme will deal with the following topics: 1. Activities and policies of the United Nations - The UN System. 2. Transnational organized crime, emerging crimes and terrorism. 3. International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law (Sources of International Criminal Law, Fundamentals of International criminal responsibility, International crimes). 4. International Criminal Jurisdictions and International Criminal Proceedings Franz Baumann - Director Management, UNODC Fatou Bensouda - Deputy Prosecutor, ICC (International Criminal Jurisdiction, International criminal courts). 5. Interstate co-operation on Criminal Matters (Mutual legal assistance, INTERPOL, EUROPOL, EU). 6. Relationship between International Criminal Law and National Legislation (Adjustment of National law, Prosecution and Punishment by National and Local Courts, Universal Jurisdiction). Career Guidance Within the course, students will be provided with a module on Career Guidance that offers a unique opportunity: the possibility of interviews with the UNV Programme recruiters. Moreover students will be trained on how to design and manage international projects on crime prevention and justice administration. After the completion of the course, meritorious students will be offered the possibility of taking up internships with UNICRI and other relevant organizations worldwide.

5. LL.M. Degree Students who successfully pass the prescribed examinations will be awarded an LL.M. Degree from the University of Torino (60 ECTS). 6. Curriculum Vitae; 2. Motivation letter: a letter in English (maximum 700 words) explaining the reasons for wanting to attend the course; 3. Photocopies of degrees or diplomas already obtained. A translation in English or Italian is welcome. The course is intended for Graduates in Law, Political Science, International Relations, or candidates with equivalent qualifications. Being a first level Master degree, the course is open to three-year graduates (and above) from internationally recognized Universities. 7. Fees and financial aid The tuition fee is 6,000 to be paid upon acceptance, but at the latest by 2 November 2009. Scholarships, for tuition fee only, may be available for meritorious candidates. All students will have to pay for accommodation and living expenses, as no scholarships will be available to cover them.
