Surface Zone: The surface fractures generally relate to panel and trough edges and the depth of cover of the extracted material. Where the longwalls occur in the shallower depth of cover (north-west of the project site) crack widths are likely to be in the order of 100-200 mm and larger cracks may occur in isolated locations. This is likely to occur in the Tertiary sediments. In the south-east of the project site where the depth of cover is deeper, it is likely that surface fractures will only occur in rare instances and generally will not be present. This may occur in the Tertiary sediments and the Quaternary alluvium. It is highly unlikely that there will be any hydraulic connection between surface fractures and the fractured zone due to the depth of cover of the coal seams, geometry of proposed longwalls and geological characteristics of the project site. ansen Bailey Environmental Impact Statement June 2013 45
