FIRST TIME IN HUNTLEY CSD 158? Welcome! A tablet or Chromebook purchased by the district, along with appropriate accessories, will be issued to your student to use throughout the course of the school year. These devices will be loaned to Huntley students at no cost for the 2015-2016 school year and will be taken to and from school on a daily basis. These devices are an important tool for student learning and will be used in the classroom consistently to access digital curricular resources. Parents will need to purchase headphones or ear-buds for classroom use. We strongly encourage all students to take their devices home for educational use. If you would like to decline to have your child take the device home, please inquire at your school about signing a waiver. RETURNING STUDENT? If you kept your device over the summer, remember to bring it charged and ready on the first day of school. If you checked your device in, you ll receive it within the first few days of school in August. NEW THIS YEAR There are no required technology information meetings for parents. Instead, technology paperwork is included with this letter. We are asking parents to review this paperwork now. If you have the capability, we strongly encourage you to print and sign the paperwork, and then bring it to hand it at your building s open house (elementary schools) or walk through days (middle schools). Elementary Open House Schedule Chesak, Martin, Conley, Mackeben: August 24, 4:30-6:00 pm Leggee 3 rd -5 th : August 24, 4:30 6:00 pm Leggee K-2 nd : August 25, 4:30-6:00 pm Middle School Walk Through Schedule August 20th 10:00 am -12:00 pm & 6:00-8:00 pm August 21st 10:00 am -12:00 pm Copies of the paperwork will be available at the schools at these times, if needed. Signed copies of the paperwork are due to the classroom teachers by August 31st, if not turned in at these events. In addition, each school will host a separate curriculum night, at which parents will hear from the classroom teacher about the grade level curriculum and classroom activities. Attendance is strongly encouraged. Additionally, Instructional Technology Specialists will be on hand with optional technology-focused sessions for new Huntley 158 families or any family that needs more information on student technology usage. In an effort to streamline this event for families, this event will be scheduled so that parents will be able to attend multiple sessions in one night if you have students who attend multiple schools on the same campus.

2015-2016 CSD 158 Parent/Guardian Technology Responsibility Agreement We are excited to offer your child the use of a technology device in school and at home. The following Technology Responsibility Code applies when using a tablet, Chromebook, and/or any technology services provided by CSD 158. Using Technology Responsibly Includes: Bringing a charged device to school every day Storing the tablet in the provided case at all times Moving safely through the hallway while carrying a device Respecting the property and privacy of others by not using another student s device or account Using the device, app, and other information resources to support learning, complete school assignments, and gain understanding of how technology works Using the Internet to gather information related to school, and to communicate with other students, teachers, and experts as it relates to school work By signing below, I agree to the following: My child will use the device in a responsible manner and will follow guidelines outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy. The cost of the device and accessories is covered by the 2015-2016 registration fee, just as textbook usage is. I am aware of the device protection program that is included with the 2015-2016 registration fees. My child and I are liable for damages to this equipment as outlined in the Device Protection Plan. My child will use digital resources, including a Google Apps for Education Account and other web based tools described on the back of this agreement. Huntley District 158 Internet Resources It is important in today s world for students to create a positive digital footprint. Using eportfolios, web 2.0 tools, and other online tools as a forum for students to share, publish and reflect is an important part of a digital classroom. This means that students may be asked to participate in a variety of interactive online programs such as Google Apps for Education, Kidblogs, Haiku, among others. Google Apps for Education is a suite of free, web-based programs designed for students that include email, document creation, calendars, and collaboration tools. Kidblog is a blog platform for students. Blogs are webpages that can be updated easily. Haiku is a learning management software that allows for content delivery, discussions and interactive activities in a password protected environment. All of these tools are web-based. Students may want to work on these tools outside of class. Many of these tools can be accessed on the student device, but can also be accessed on home computers. During the school year, students may be asked to write responses using these tools. Having an authentic audience is one of the key components of using these tools. We are able to extend student learning outside the classroom and engage other classrooms in our district, other learners across the globe, and experts in the field. Teachers will make every effort to ensure appropriate content and behavior while using online services. For privacy, no personal information will be included. Students will be identified by first name and first initial of their last name. Students are allowed to post their ideas and opinions, but not their age, email address, student ID number, birthday, or any other sensitive information. Student behavior and expectations extend into usage of these tools. All students have access to an email address that is used for school related communication only. This email address can only send and receive email to other students and staff in District 158. District 158 filters student use of the internet according to federal regulations in the Children s Internet Protection Act. This filter extends outside of the district network when using a district owned student device. Although every effort is made to prevent harmful content from being accessible, no internet filter is perfect. It is strongly encouraged that home wifi networks are password protected, and if you choose to allow internet usage on a district-owned device, you do so in a supervised setting.

New this year, Huntley District 158 is offering, as part of each student s registration fee, the Device Protection Plan. The Device Protection Plan is designed to assist families in covering the cost of accidental damage to student devices. What does the Device Protection Plan Cover? Terms and Conditions of the Protection Plan Agreement: -Device Protection Plan Cost is part of each student s Registration Fee. -Device Protection Plan does not cover misplaced chargers or cases. -Device Protection Plan does not cover intentional damage, damage due to misuse, or loss. -Device Protection Plan covers theft Official Police Report must be filed. -If device incurs accidental damage, the following fee structure will be applied: DAMAGE FEES FOR DEVICES COVERED BY THE D158 DEVICE PROTECTION PLAN Incident Damage Student Cost 1st Accidental Incident $ 0 2nd Accidental Incident $25 3rd Accidental Incident Cost of Repair or Replacement of Device Any Misuse, Neglect, Intentional Damage or Loss Cost of Repair or Replacement of Device What should I do if my child s device is damaged? Have your student inform the classroom teacher. A mobile technician or building administrator will work through the process with you. How does the program work? Under the Device Protection Plan students and parents pay a very modest annual fee as part of the annual school registration fees to cover accidental damage. How do I enroll in the Device Protection Plan? No enrollment necessary as the fee is included in the annual school registration fee. What happens if I have a loss? Contact your school s front office for further instructions on how to report a claim. What is covered under the damage waiver? Most loss and damage to your school-issued device is covered, subject to the following typical exclusions: - Any dishonest, fraudulent, malicious or criminal acts. - Any loss to software, data, multimedia, or other personal information that has been placed on the device. - Disappearance of device not reported to law enforcement. - Any use not in accordance with school policies and procedures.
