Deliver Desktops as a Service! With VDI 2.0!

Me! About the Author! Two smart people I work with! Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in our research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings. Gartner research publications consist of the opinions of Gartner's research organization and should not be construed as statements of fact. Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.!

Trends! Companies have outsourced the management of nearly 20m desktops to HP, CSC, IBM, and others! Companies are looking for an outsourced service for VDI! Public Cloud DaaS services like Amazon Workspaces does not meet security and privacy concerns! Service providers are interested in providing desktops as a service! VDI 1.0 solutions did not meet the requirements of a multi-tenant service! VDI 2.0 is a multi-tenant architecture that can enable efficient Desktops as a Service!

VDI was going to solve a bunch of problems with end user mobility! End users can access their apps from any device! Corporate data stays secure in the data center! Apps and OS can be updated centrally! In 2010, Gartner forecast that VDI would replace 30% of enterprise PCs!

In reality, VDI 1.0 is very complex for IT! A VDI 1.0 deployment can take many months:! Each layer in the stack comes with multiple consoles! You need capacity planning for each layer! Each layer needs to be deployed for high availability! Complex networking diagrams! Replicas of the entire deployment in each major geo! Multiple teams involved in the deployment (server, network, storage, virtualization, and desktop)!

Resulting in massive operational complexity! Daily problems after deployment: users cannot log into their desktop, user experience, etc.!! Root cause analysis requires collaboration between multiple teams: server, storage, networking, virtualization and desktop!

Amazon offered public cloud DaaS! VDI is a difficult workload challenging even for the most skilled IT teams! Amazon Workspaces provides a simple model for IT to consume desktops! However there are challenges with running desktops in the public cloud! - IT does not want to put sensitive information in their desktops in the public cloud! - What about applications? Hosting the desktop in the public cloud creates an extra hop from user to desktop in Amazon, from desktop to app in the data center! So customers needed a private cloud DaaS!

Private Cloud DaaS! Yes, resellers and service providers stepped in to offer Desktops as a Service! Take over the capex and operational complexity of VDI deployments! Enable IT to deliver desktops to their end users! But this DaaS offering had to be done with VDI 1.0 solutions!

Single Tenant Deployment with VDI 1.0! Many moving parts and pieces! Load Balancers! Active Directory! Web Interface! Controllers! Servers for virtual desktops! Provisioning! Storage!

Desktops as a Service with VDI 1.0! Copy-paste operational complexity for each tenant! Tenant 1! Tenant 2 AD! AD! AD! Tenant 3! AD! Tenant 4!

Service Provider Challenges with Desktops as a Service with VDI 1.0! High operational costs because operational issues had to be solved for each tenant:! How do you update servers, databases for each tenant?! How do you push updates to clients?! How do you push updates to VDA?! How do you trouble shoot problems across tenants?!

VDI 2.0: HCI & Cloud simplify VDI by 10x! Three layers (broker, portal, and load balancer) can be moved into the cloud! Single Pane of Glass to provision and operate virtual desktops!

Single tenant deployment for! VDI 2.0! Install Workspot Connector on HCI to provision persistent desktops! Configure in minutes! Control Plane Architecture! No desktops, credentials, apps, or data in our cloud! Multi-tenant, cloud-native architecture! Leverage RDP/RemoteFX!

Desktops as a Service with VDI 2.0! Single pane of glass to manage each tenant centrally! Distributed deployment at either customer data center or service provider data center! Tenant 1! Tenant 2! Tenant 3!

Summary! Companies are looking for an outsourced service for VDI! Security and user experience with applications are key concerns! Service providers are interested in providing desktops as a service! VDI 1.0 s single tenant architecture and complexity stalls multi-tenant deployments! VDI 2.0 is a multi-tenant architecture that can enable efficient Desktops as a Service while providing best application performance. And sensitive information is kept in your datacenter, not in the cloud.!
