Programme Syllabus Sida 1 av 6 Dnr: MDH 2.1.2-56/10 Programme code: ZKS21 Master program in Product and Process Development - Production and Logistics, 120 credits This is a translation of the original programme syllabus in Swedish, which was ratified by the Faculty Board of Natural Science and Technology on 17 March 2010 and is valid for programmes given after 1 July 2010. Objectives The objectives of the programme are: - to meet labour market demand for university students trained at master level in product and process development, - to offer internationally useful and attractive knowledge in production, logistics, and project management from a holistic point of view, - to offer the student continued and improved opportunities for research within the discipline of product and process development, - to strengthen research within product and process development through connections with current and future research as well as offer students research experience through participation in research activities. The learning outcomes below are based on the Higher Education Ordinance, appendix 2 (2006:1053) Knowledge and understanding Upon completion of the programme the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate knowledge and understanding of modern production and logistics, including broad as well as specialized knowledge within product and process development, - demonstrate profound insights in research and development focusing on tools and processes for efficient production and logistics from the point of view of life cycle sustainability, - demonstrate profound methodological knowledge in production and logistics. Skills and abilities Upon completion of the programme the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate ability to critically and systematically synthesize knowledge and analyze, evaluate and manage complex phenomena, issues and situations, even in circumstances of limited information, - demonstrate ability to contribute to the production of knowledge within the field by identifying and framing scientific questions in critical, independent and creative manner; plan and perform qualified tasks within given time constraints and with the use of appropriate methods; evaluate completed work, - demonstrate ability in national and international contexts to communicate and discuss, orally and in writing, scientific results including the theoretical and empirical bases for

Sida 2 av 6 such results with representatives from organizations and the private and the public sectors, - demonstrate the ability required to participate in research and development or to perform independent and qualified work in related professional field. Critical judgement and approach Upon completion of the programme the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate ability to make assessments within product and process development with regard to sustainable development, relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate awareness of ethical dimensions of research and development, - demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of product and process development, evaluate its social role, and reflect on responsible usage of research, - demonstrate awareness of his/her strengths and weaknesses and take responsibility for his/her learning development. Language of instruction The language of instruction is English for all tuition, examinations, assigned reading, etc. Specific entry requirements A completed bachelor degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits within the field of Technology/Engineering/ Economics/ Business/ Science, of which at least 15 credits in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. Nonengineering graduates are required to have at least one year o working experience in industry. English B is required for Swedish students. Foreign students are required to submit a TOEFL test result, minimum score 550 with a TWE score of at least 4 (PBT) or 79 with a TWE score of at least 17 (ibt) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of minimum 6.0 and no band score below 5.0 or equivalent. Selection Selection according to university credits. Course content The Master programme in Product and Process Development Production and Logistics is a two-year technical programme within Product and Process Development. The first year covers competitive systems of production, project management, operational analysis, production and logistics planning, maintenance, and supply chain management. The second year focuses on scientific theory within the discipline and ends with the student completing a research assignment.

Sida 3 av 6 The programme allows the student to develop profound knowledge in processes and methods for product development in the discipline of product and process development and prepares him/her for third-cycle study programmes. The programme covers areas like entrepreneurship, project management, product development, scientific methodology as well as individual development, and internationalization. Teaching methods within the programme include lectures, project work, seminars, self-study and supervision. A majority of the courses are campus based. The programme includes a high degree of project work and several courses offer projects in collaboration with business. The student is expected to set aside time for self study and group work outside of the scheduled teaching. The modes of examination are commonly written assignments, oral presentations, seminars and written exams. The written assignments consist mainly of reports, calculations and physical illustrations but may include video-based product presentations. Written exams are usually held in specific examination halls and occasionally include computer aids. Students in the programme are tested on both individual and groups basis. Regular training in collaboration with and between groups is considered a central part of the programme even as individual achievements remain in focus. The programme ends with the student completing a research assignment individually or with a fellow student. Sida 4 av 6 The number of previously completed courses affects the student s eligibility for subsequent courses. The programme may include other optional courses than the ones given above. See separate section on optional courses. Choices within the programme Each student is required to produce and sign an individual study plan based on the programme syllabus before the start of the programme. The student is assisted in this process. Options made within the programme may affect the student s chances of fulfilling the degree requirements. Host School The Master programme in Product and Process Development Production and Logistics is hosted by the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering. Degree The programme is designed to be included in the following degree: - Master of Science (120 credits) in Product and Process Development. The student should be aware that choices made with regard to optional courses may affect the possibilities of fulfilling degree requirements. So may a decision not to complete courses. Information about degrees, degree requirements and the system of qualification can be found on the university web portal. Quality Assurance The programme is continuously assessed through course and programme evaluations, which are used in programme and course development. The School of Innovation, Design and Engineering is responsible for the evaluation of the programme. Programme evaluations are made yearly by student and teacher evaluations which are presented and discussed among programme coordinators and programme instructors. They form the basis for suggested changes to the programme. Student Participation Twice yearly student representatives are offered participation in planning, development and assessment of the current programmes and courses. Research Basis Research at Mälardalen University is carried out mainly within six prioritized areas, defined in the university education and research strategy. The Production and process development programme falls within Innovation and product development. The other prioritized areas are: Didactics and intercultural communication, Embedded systems, Environment, energy

Sida 5 av 6 and resource optimization, Sustainable development, working life and management, and Health and welfare. is a central part of Innovation and product development. Mälardalen University has developed a unique and internationally acknowledged multidisciplinary knowledge and competence within this area and has several established research groups in innovation technology, information design and product and process development working in collaboration. The research environment is home to the Centre for Product Realization which is a resource for the Mälardalen region and attracts broad research initiatives. The scientific standard of the course is guaranteed through the participation of senior academic staff in course and programme planning, development and instruction. Third Stream Mission Mälardalen University works actively to offer education leading to employment, among other things by developing courses in interaction with the wider community. The education programme items are frequently checked against the expectations from regional business on engineers and regional business representatives participate in course and programme surveys. Current collaboration partners are Eskilstuna Fabriksförening, ABB, and Volvo CE. Programme students carry out third-stream projects in collaboration with regional enterprises as part of their course work and/or through specialized project courses hosted by the Centre for Product Realization. The education programme frequently features guest lectures by representatives from the industry and other regional employers. Internationalization Mälardalen University regards internationalization one of the key factors to qualitative education and research. Students that are exposed to international environments and issues increase their knowledge and understanding of other cultures and traditions, both of which are in high demand on the labour market. Students may also gain intercultural knowledge and understanding, however, through their choice of assignment or through participation in sponsor activities hosted by the student council. Students enrolled in the programme may attend part of it at one of the partner universities to Mälardalen University, or at a university offering equivalent courses.
