The Staff of LakeView and I are enthusiastic about the new school year. This is going to be a history making school year. The school has undergone some much needed remodeling with changes to classrooms and labs and most of all a brand new communications system in each classroom. We have added a number of new pieces of equipment to the Technology Education Department. We have converted rooms 109 and 110 into one large classroom to house our Physical Education/Health classes. Yes, we have brought Physical Education/Health back to LakeView and we will be renting facilities at the RecPlex for actual classes. The Principles of Engineering Lab is undergoing some remodeling this summer so it can better serve additional students, and it looks neat, bright, and cheerful. We have made some major changes in Big Blue which will better accommodate our Technology Education classes. The building and grounds have never looked nicer and the addition of new technology will allow us to better prepare your daughter or son to meet the demands of higher education, business, and industry in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The new graduation requirements are fully in effect for all grades levels. Twenty-three credits is the minimum number of credits required for graduation; LakeView encourages all students to earn 28 credits or more since there is no longer a maximum. LakeView has partnered with Harborside Academy for the Fine Arts course offerings and we will transport students from Lakeview after lunch to attend block #8 classes at Harborside. The school day ends at 2:36, Monday through Friday to return to her/his boundary school to be transported home. Students who have a one block release may leave school at 1:36 p.m. if they have their own transportation. The expectations for our students have never been higher, and we will need your support even more than before. LakeView will have approximately 435 students this school year which is thirteen more students than last school year and about 114 female students which is nine more than last school year. LakeView is a demanding high school that prepares students to enter various fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics. Students select a career path by their sophomore year. The curriculum is geared to prepare students for a marketable skill upon graduation. This takes hard work and patience. We need your support and involvement to help your student focus on being a well-educated, competent, and informed learner. This will require that we work together and support each other. You will always have my and the staffs support and cooperation. In turn, we need your support and cooperation. LakeView is a very successful high school, and our students earn some of the highest Wisconsin Knowledge and Concept Exam (WKCE) scores in the State. Our graduates have earned many recognitions, scholarships, and awards. Your students need to be a part of this success! We will host our first Chat- n- Chew event at LakeView on October 10 th at 6:00 p.m. The theme of the first Chat- n- Chew is How Your Children Can Pay for Your Retirement. Dinner will be served and the neat thing is that it is free. More information will be coming home with your student in September and instructions on how to register for this free event.
(Principal message continued) LakeView has experienced much success over the last eleven years. We have grown from 161 students in the 2002/2003 school year to 435 students this school year. LakeView has had to conduct a lottery the past three school years, and had to turn away 41 students in the 2011/2012 school year, 64 students in the 2012/2013 school year and now 89 students for the 2013/2014 school year. Something needs to be done! Thus, we are looking to build on to LakeView for the 2014/2015 school year. Working with Gateway Technical College and KABA (Kenosha Area Business Alliance), we have spent much time this summer designing an approximate 28,000 square foot addition to Lakeview. The comfortable capacity of LakeView is 365 students, and there will be 435 students at LakeView this school year. The proposed addition will take LakeView to a capacity of approximately 650 students. The LakeView building is owned by KABA with KUSD and Gateway paying rent to occupy the building. The proposal being studied would have KABA building the addition with KUSD and Gateway entering into a long term (ten year) lease. All this is tentative at this time. If the addition is successful it will take the cooperation and support of the KABA Board, KUSD School Board, Gateway Board, the electorate of KUSD and the State Technical College Board. The need and demand is present. The question is, do we have the resources to make this happen? We will keep you informed on the progress of the proposal and the need for your support. This will be a challenging year for all of us with the need for our students to be better prepared to enter the work field. The LakeView faculty and staff are committed to maintaining a high level of academic integrity in our instructional programs and service to our students and their families. I want to assure everyone that LakeView will prepare your daughters and sons for the future with an effective and sound educational program. We need your support, and I assure you that you have our support! Registration: Enrollment is now completed online and payment option is also available online. Detailed instructions can be found at http://lakeview.kusd.edu/. To avoid waiting in line, please complete enrollment and payment by noon on August 19 th to ensure confirmation of completion of both steps prior to registration. To access parent connect, a parent connect PIN and password are required. If you do not have this information, please stop in the LakeView office between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday with a picture ID. If you do not have access to a computer, one is available in the LakeView office from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Otherwise, computers will be available at registration to complete the enrollment process (may experience wait times). In addition, everyone will complete the registration process at LakeView on August 20 th from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm or August 21 st from 3:00-7:00 pm. Make-up registration will be August 27-28 during the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. At registration, you will receive transportation information/bus pass and student schedules. Please complete the following enclosed forms, and bring them to registration. If you have questions, please call the office at 359-8155. 1) Computer Damage & Vandalism Policy. Please read and discuss this policy; there will be consequences with each violation. You will be held responsible for costs of repair and/or replacement for any vandalism or theft that occurs. 2) Contract of Expectations and Conduct. (This form should be brought on the first day of school by a parent with necessary medication(s), or as needed during the year.) No medications should be brought to school without this form. All medications will be kept in the office. Gear-Up: A reminder to parents who signed their child up for Gearup, the two-day orientation sessions are August 22 nd and 23 rd. Your student will find the program helpful, interesting, rewarding and fun! New Student/Parent Meeting: From 6:00-7:00 p.m. on August 28 th, there will be a meeting for new students and parents/guardians. This is an opportunity to ask any questions prior to the start of the school year, and have transportation questions answered by the District Transportation Officer. First Day of School: School begins at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3 rd. School Pictures: Pictures will be taken Wednesday, September 4 th. Counselor s Corner: All Kenosha Unified juniors and seniors interested in learning more about the Youth Options Program are invited to attend a fall presentation. This presentation will be held on September 12 th at the Indian Trail Auditorium, 6800-60 th Street, from 6:00 7:30 p.m. Counselors from KUSD high schools and representatives from Gateway Technical College, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and Carthage College will share course information to eligible KUSD students and also work with parents and students so that they understand the policies, procedures and paperwork required for taking Youth Options courses. Student Personal Computer Policy: Students are allowed to bring personal computers only if the Student Personal Computer Policy has been signed by both student and parent/guardian, and returned to Adam Haut at LakeView. We appreciate cooperation of students and parents/guardians. The intent of the policy is to maximize the learning/teaching atmosphere and minimize distractions. Students dressed inappropriately will be given the option to call home for appropriate clothing, or they will be required to purchase attire for $10. If you have any questions regarding the student dress code, please call Mr. Hittman at 359-8155. School ID s: ALL students are required to wear a school ID on a lanyard while at school. ID s and landyards will be given out on September 4 th during pictures. Replacement ID s and lanyards will be available to purchase in the office. Students who forget their ID at home will be given the option to call a parent/guardian to bring the ID to school, otherwise a new ID/lanyard will need to be purchased at that time. There are no exceptions.
