Comments Money - the costs are not budgeted for Changing names would cost money and budget is already a problem as it is, unless a private company or the government would pay for cost changes. (Staff) Do Not change the names... Code word...incur cost not budget for... decoded YOU WILL PAY MORE...even more cost passed on to the STUDENT NO WAY..NO MORE INCREASES for what to please some fat cat NO way (student) Comments Money waste of money Totally unnecessary. The name COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA will not change anyway, and I think it is a waste of money. It will not make students more successful, won't provide any benefit to the students, 2
and actually takes money AWAY from where it should be spent - ON THE STUDENTS. Move on to issues of importance. (Staff) Please do not waste money that has not been budgeted for something as Frivolous as this. (Student) Comments Money there is a better use for the money... Money is best spent toward financial aid programs, technology upgrades, and future proofing student enrollment by implementing needed certification programs. (Student) Why spend the money on a vanity. Put the money where it should go - first and foremost the students and the staff. CSN needs to get away from the vanity agendas. (Staff) RANK 2 Against Not necessary/not broke don t fix it: (N = 604) There is nothing wrong with the current name. There is no reason to take unaccounted money out of the budget for an unnecessary task. (Student) This is a frivolous cause and flies in the face of existing issues at CSN regarding budgetary restraints and fiscal irresponsibility. No one cares about a name;. CCSN or CSN or North Las Vegas CSN is irrelevant. Provide quality instruction and affordable tuition, and you'll have unsurpassed student enrollment. Spending millions to rebrand CSN (which many still call CCSN) is a boondoggle. It is shameful that the bureaucracy of CSN is even entertaining this. (Staff) If it works don't fix it! Everyone knows it as College of Southern Nevada how can you change the name to associate it with our community any better than that? (Student) Rank 3 Against Current name is descriptive/recognizable: (N = 279) The brand name 'College of Southern Nevada' has been established over the years both locally and nationally. It made sense to change the name from the 'Community College of Southern Nevada' to the College of Southern Nevada, eliminating the common stigma of a 'community college' degrees as deemed less than those degrees issued by state 'colleges' or state 'universities'. But, when you balance the real (unfunded) financial $ cost of a formal name change and the unmeasured cost of the need to 're-brand' this institution is should be not a great challenge to anyone that this is not an idea with enough merit to warrant a change at this time. (Staff) Colleges are about their History as well as their Current Status that has build a foundation from which to grow and succeed - Building Name Recognition is Expensive and takes a very long time. (Student) I think the names of the campuses accurately reflect where they are - Cheyenne Ave, Charleston Blvd, and Henderson. They are now historical and generational. I think we need to hold on to history and establish tradition...starting with not changing the names of the campuses every time it suits someone...this is not the first time, let's concentrate our energies in other areas...like getting more of our students to graduate...will a name change influence that? (Staff) 3
Rank 4 Against - Will cause confusion: (N = 112) As my Daddy used to say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Long term residents who may have gone to classes before know where/what the W.Charleston/Cheyenne campuses are and what they are all about. Changing the names could cause confusion for residents thinking about going back to school or taking part in the many community functions held at our campuses (Staff) I believe that changing the names will not only cost us money that doesn't need to be spend needlessly, but will also confuse people more than help them. These campuses have had the same name designations since they opened up including the Cheyenne Campus, the West Charleston Campus and the Henderson Campus. This makes it easy for people to find the addresses in the phone book if needed to see where they are located at. Leave our campus names alone (student) Don't feel any purpose to changing the names it will only create confusion because all campuses are tied together anyway. The name was just change in the past from CCSD to CSN and many new people in the area feel they are two different college (Student) Rank 5 Against - NLV perceived as negative (N = 60) There is no need. Also, 'North Las Vegas' instead of Cheyenne Campus may invoke certain bias or fears of the cities' reputation. (Student) Changing the name of the Cheyenne campus to reflect the municipality 'North Las Vegas', a troubled community, will further alienate the quality of student enrollment. We have a large population of students that avoid classes at this campus and currently refer to the our great Cheyenne campus as the ghetto campus (Staff) North Las Vegas has a very bad reputation and is bankrupt. Why would we want our college even associated with that? (Staff) Rank 6 (Against) - Will segregate/separate the college (N = 53) Dividing the names based on municipality i.e. CSN Henderson/CSN Las Vegas diminishes the feeling that CSN is a college that offers a bachelor s degree. It sounds vocational. College of Southern Nevada is on par with Nevada State College. Altering the name makes it feel like a tertiary option after UNLV and NSC. (Student) By naming the campus specifically, it supports a feeling of separation not one of inclusion. (Staff) I believe that if we separate the names it will be the start of people viewing us as three separate colleges, not one college with different sites. (Staff) Rank 7 Against: Information provided not sufficient/one-sided (N= 47) I don't think there is adequate information in the information provided to make a responsible decision. Would the cost of the name changes be subsidized in any part by the respective municipalities? Would the name changes affect the institution in terms of internal and external student success reporting? At this point, considering the information given in this survey, I am not in support of this initiative. (Staff) 4
. What I've just read is vague and does not constitute any concrete reasoning to make the change. In addition, the cost to make any changes that are approved should be offset by the permanent elimination of at least two administration positions. As this is unlikely to happen, I don't believe that I will ever support a name change (Student) The survey does not represent the cons as well as the pros. This survey is complete and utter bs. Even the question & answer portion is rigged with pro-persuasive rhetoric, which is in favor of the name change; therefor making the survey bias. The question should be,'do you support the board taking millions of your hard earned dollars, so they can change campus names, instead of investing in the students... ( student) Rank 8 Against: No but for the money (N = 35) comments provided with Yes but for the money as the last category in this report. Comments from Respondents who Support a name change Rank 1 Support: Name change is good (N = 60) I think this is a generally good idea - I think the names of the campuses should reflect the cities in which they are located. (Staff) Now that everything is online is good to change the name of campuses to be find by the search engines. (Student) Rank 1 Support: Yes but for the money (N = 60) comments provided with No but for the money as the last category in this report. Rank 3 Support: Comment not related to the issue (N = 50) Great school, happy to be part of a wonderful school. (Student)... CSN has the best film school in Nevada. (Student) Please add more sports like Football, men's and women's basketball, soccer, and volleyball to our local college. Our residents deserve more. How many of our residents go to our surrounding states and spend tuition there. Nevada is losing money. (Student) Rank 4 Support: Will bring campus together/sense of pride (N = 48) Changing the names would foster a closer working relationship with the communities especially in North Las Vegas (Staff) I believe this change would positively affect community/ college relations buy creating an ownership feeling, of sorts. The communities may feel these are THEIR colleges now, not just Southern Nevada's. (Student) 5
A clear distinction between CSN and CSN Cheyenne or CSN Henderson would be a marvelous idea - even CSN North Las Vegas would be great. Listing a municipality may give a student a sense of pride in their institution; instead of being the general overlay of CSN as an entire school, campus location may possibly bring communities together in their educational goals. (Staff) Rank 5 Support: Not an important issue/don t care (N = 44) If 'I Don't Care' was an option I would have picked it (staff) A study shouldn't be needed to designate where you are located in the city of Las Vegas. I was always under the assumption your campuses were always designated- Cheyenne, Charleston and Henderson. Good luck as this study is completely unnecessary and a waste of time, student dollars and taxpayers money. (Student) Rank 6 Support: Provided a name suggestion (N = 35) I believe we should use the format used in other communities for both colleges and university The College of Southern Nevada at North Las Vegas, The College of Southern Nevada at Henderson, The College of Southern Nevada at Summerlin or something similar...just a thought (staff) Change the names of the campus so that it is clear which campus is best to go to for your degree (i.e. which campus is stronger for Arts or Science, have that in the name (student) Rank 7 Support: Will be easier to find (N = 34) I am both a student and a staff member. I understand the need to identify the individual campuses to reflect the municipality they reside in. People get confused as to which campus is which sometimes and if we called the Cheyenne Campus the North Las Vegas campus they would automatically know which campus it was. It will be wise to change names, because by doing that people will know where to go. (Student) BUT for the money (60 Yes) (N0 35) I agree with the pros of the argument and as long as the budget is made to allow change see no reason to not change it. (Support Student) I am for this change because it makes sense and would eliminate certain confusions like is the WC campus really the 'West' Charleston Campus or the 'Charleston' Campus. My concern though is the cost and how long it would take to get everything changed. (Support Staff) As a student, I believe that given some time, the money can be budgeted to make this happen and at that time I would support it. I don't, however, support it when CSN has some more important issues to deal with at the moment. Thank you. (Against Student) I would be more in support of it if there was a plan as to where the money would be coming from. (Against Staff) 6
