Children First. Always. DIVISION OF FINANCE 52 Chambers Street, New York, NY, 10007 SCHOOL ALLOCATION MEMORANDUM NO. 79, FY 13 DATE: November 08 2012 TO: FROM: Community Superintendents High School Superintendents Children First Networks School Principals Michael Tragale, Chief Financial Officer SUBJECT: Continued Funding Allocations Through the Periodic Assessment Program, the Department of Education (DOE) is providing a oneyear continuation of funding to schools across Clusters that selected the Design Your Own (DYO) option in 2011-12 to support innovative assessment activities. The initiative assisted schools in developing and using their own assessment techniques and tools to achieve the educational objectives of the Division of Academics, Performance, and Support s Periodic Assessment (PA) Program. The 2012-13 Periodic Assessment Program increased the flexibility for schools to choose schoolbased assessments and discontinued the application process for DYO. Schools that applied for and were accepted into the DYO Program in school-year 2011-12 had the opportunity to apply to receive funding for the 2012-13 school-year in June 2012. This one-year of continuation of funding is intended to support schools formerly selecting DYO as they transition to the Common Core Learning Standards. Ninety Seven (97) schools were approved to receive Continued DYO Funding in 2012-13. Schools either received $1,500 for one subject area (ELA or math) or $3,000 for two subject areas (ELA and math). The DYO Program supported schools in developing their own assessments or in building on existing school-specific assessments, including qualitative, portfolio, and rubric-based assessments. All DOE schools, grades K-12, were eligible to apply to use DYO assessments for all of their Periodic Assessments or to use DYO assessments in combination with DOE-provided Periodic Assessments in 2011-12. All DOE schools continue to be eligible to design or purchase their own assessments by selecting the Other PA option in 2012-13. Continued DYO funds are specifically targeted toward the schools design, implementation, interpretation, and communication of assessments and results, and can be used toward aligning their school-based assessments with the Common Core Learning Standards. The allocation is conditioned on schools complying, whenever applicable, with the requirements set forth in the Division of Academics, Performance and Support s Periodic Assessment Program.
