Applications Student Information and Academic Information are automatically on the application based on information in ATS. Academic Assessment: For school staff only. Parents do not complete this section. Especially the days absent and late excused section Make at least 5 choices If you have moved out of D2, schools from both districts will be listed on the application as choices. Attendance and lateness will especially impact out of district applicants. Only write where it is indicated. White space is not an invitation to write in more information. There is a sample application in the front of the directory on page 12.
Two Types of District Middle Schools Screened Most District 2 Middle Schools Unscreened *IS 276 *Spruce Street School Quest 2 Learn City Knoll Yorkville East MS *priority given to current 5 th graders
Screened Middle Schools Most District 2 middle schools are Screened schools This means they test and/or interview applicants Schools rank students based on a range of academic criteria: Criteria can include interviews, student work, and their tests Each middle school creates their own rubric for comparing students Screened schools will place the most weight on their own criteria Screened schools have access to every applicant s ranking for their school and application information which includes: Fourth grade test scores and end of year grades Days Absent and Late (4 th grade year - 2014-2015) Current Teacher Comments All Screened schools will screen students who rank them 1st, some schools will screen those students who rank them 1st and 2nd.
Unscreened Middle Schools New schools that opened since 2008 are Limited Unscreened schools (Quest 2 Learn, IS 276, PS 397, City Knoll, Yorkville East MS in District 2) Quest 2 Learn, City Knoll, Yorkville East You must attend a tour or open house to be considered IS 276 and Spruce Street School (PS 397) You must attend a tour or open house to be considered IS 276 and Spruce Street will give first priority to their current fifth graders They will give second priority to those living in their zone Limited Unscreened schools see a student s name, their elementary school, and whether they attended a tour or open house. Limited Unscreened schools cannot see how the student ranked them.
Eligibility and Priorities Lab, Salk and ESMS: Must list as 1 st choice to even be considered. Zoned Middle Schools: If you rank your zoned school, you will be given priority at that school (Baruch Academic Program and MS 131) Note: Baruch SP must be listed as a separate choice if you are interested in this program All families are eligible to apply to competitive city-wide programs (e.g., NEST, ICE, Anderson, Special Music School, PPAS) Information for these schools is in the Middle School Directory These are separate application processes that families need to do independently
Citywide Middle Schools Citywide middle schools are open to all students who are residents of New York City. NEST, Anderson, PPAS and Mark Twain are a few of these citywide schools. Separate application process for all except Mark Twain Twain will only appear in your list of choices if you submit a Request for Testing form. This is a blind choice: District 2 schools cannot see it listed. Example: If you list Mark Twain as #1 and Salk as #2, Salk views your ranking as #1 for them. It is NOT an additional choice like other citywide schools (e.g., NEST, ICE, Anderson, Special Music School, PPAS). If listed as a choice and are accepted, you will not receive another offer from your District 2 schools.
Middle School Application Process Tips The Middle School Directory is a great reference for what options exist for District 2 students. It includes a brief description, contact information, enrollment information, and selection criteria for each middle school. Each school s description also indicates the number of seats in comparison to number of applicants for the 2013-2014 year This book is also available online: http://schools.nyc.gov/choicesenrollment/middle/resources/ default.htm Continue to check middle school websites for updates to tours and open houses. Schools will add additional open houses and tours. Please consider travel distance when ranking schools on the application There is no sibling priority for middle school Tips provided by the Department of Education
