ITE 06/18/01 News Release No. 01/14 ITE STARTS NEW COURSE TO MEET GROWING DEMAND IN HUMAN RESOURCES SECTOR Two new Higher Nitec courses to commence in April 2014 GCE O Level school leavers keen on pursuing a career in the Human Resources (HR) sector can now look forward to a such a course at ITE. Commencing Apr 2014 at ITE College Central, the new Higher Nitec in Human Resource & Administration course is set to groom a generation of HR practitioners skilled in a wide range of HR functions in an establishment. 2 Demand for HR practitioners is growing in tandem with the number of businesses being set up in Singapore. The evolving HR sector is also fueling demand for more practitioners, as shared services centres are fast becoming a well-established feature in both private and public establishments. These centres, which cover functions such as payroll administration, leave, claims and training administration, are expected to grow in Singapore. Industry Demand and Endorsement 3 The growing demand for HR practitioners is shown in the Ministry of Manpower s Job Vacancies Reports. The Human Resource Associate Professionals occupation was featured as one of the Top Ten Job Vacancies for PMETs, with some 250 job vacancies, in the report released in Jan 2012. 1
4 A check with three leading establishments in the HR sector Vital, Virtual HR and the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI), indicated some 180 vacancies for HR Administrators annually. SHRI, the only not-for-profit professional HR body in Singapore representing over 3,000 HR professionals, expressed support for the new Higher Nitec in Human Resource & Administration course. Mr Erman Tan, President, SHRI shared: As the HR profession continues to grow and evolve, there is an increasing need for HR personnel to perform a wide range of skills and functions such as payroll, employee data management, compensation and benefits. This layer of support is needed both in large organisations and SMEs. In the latter where Human Resource Management is being identified as a key area of capability, HR administration plays a critical role in the efficient management of businesses and productivity. The Higher Nitec in Human Resource & Administration course curriculum fits in well to prepare graduates to be equipped with industry-relevant skills and practical knowledge of HR administration that enables them to be well sought- after by diverse industries. 5 More information on the new Higher Nitec in Human Resource & Administration course is available in Annex A. New Higher Nitec Course in Space Design Technology 6 Commencing Apr 2014 is the new Higher Nitec in Space Design Technology course. This course aims to develop the manpower required to support growing demands for space design in the construction industry. More information on the Higher Nitec in Space Design Technology course is available in Annex B. Application Procedures 7 Application for Higher Nitec courses will be open from Mon 13 Jan 2014 (3 pm) to Fri 17 Jan 2014 (4 pm). Secondary school leavers who have taken the GCE O level examinations in 2013 will be able to submit their applications for full-time Higher Nitec courses at the MOE-JAE website: www.moe.gov.sg/education/ admissions/jae/. 2
8 For full-time Nitec courses, GCE O Level applicants may submit their applications from Mon 13 Jan 2014 (3pm) to Thu 16 Jan 2014 (5pm) via the ITE website at www.ite.edu.sg. Under the new Synchronised Nitec Intake (SNI) exercise introduced in 2014, GCE O Level holders will start their Nitec courses in January instead of April, and will graduate from their Nitec courses three months earlier. Details of the SNI are appended in Annex E. 9 For Traineeship Courses, applicants are to apply personally at the ITE Headquarters Customer & Visitor Centre (2 Ang Mo Kio Drive, Singapore 567720) from Tue 14 Jan 2014 to Fri 17 Jan 2014 (9 am to 5 pm). 10 Those who wish to receive course or career counseling and advice at any of the ITE Colleges may do so from 8:30 am to 5 pm during the application period. Annex B Higher Nitec in Space Design Technology 高 级 国 家 工 艺 教 育 局 证 书 空 间 设 计 技 术 Introduction In support of the Government s push towards productivity-driven economic growth, the Ministry of National Development and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), in consultation with industry, formulated a holistic Construction Productivity Roadmap to transform the construction industry and raise its productivity. The Roadmap aims to realise the vision of a highly integrated and technologically advanced construction sector led by progressive firms and supported by a skilled and competent workforce in 2020. The Higher Nitec in Space Design Technology course was introduced to meet the growing skills demand and competency gaps in the market. ANNEX E SYNCHRONISED NITEC INTAKE Under the Synchronised Nitec intake (SNI), GCE N Level holders will continue to apply for Nitec courses in December following the release of GCE N Level examination results. The application results for Nitec courses will be released in the first week of January. Students will commence training for their Nitec courses in the second week of January and undergo two weeks of orientation. GCE O Level holders will apply for Nitec courses in the second week of January following the release of GCE O Level examination results. The application results for Nitec courses will be released in the third week of January. Students will commence training for their Nitec courses in the fourth week of January and undergo an orientation programme concurrently. The closing date of the January intake will be extended to the second week of February to allow for late application and appeal cases. Benefits of Synchronised Nitec Intake Training commences earlier GCE O Level holders start their Nitec training three months earlier - in January instead of April. They can therefore graduate and enter the job market earlier. More common activities can be organised With both GCE N and O Level holders following the same training semesters, ITE is able to take advantage of economies of scale and plan more activities for both groups of students. 17
