LONDON The beginning of 2011 continued to provide some optimism for businesses; as signs of economic growth, as small as they were, continued after the economy had emerged from the recession in the UK the year before. As such, employers remained cautiously optimistic for Q1. However, the ever prevalent warnings of a double dip recession mounted pressure on businesses to think harder about controlling spend, and by the time we reached Q4, it was clear that 2012 might be a challenging year for recruitment. However, despite the cliché, it s really not all doom and gloom. In spite of the state of the general market, IT salaries in London and the South East have remained fairly resilient for the past few years, and despite economic turbulence, they have even grown in some niche areas and sectors. Particular improvement has been seen with the growing demand for new media professionals. Specifically, for people with the right knowledge and skills in web design, development and management has been high, causing an upward push on these respective salaries. In contrast, demand for analysis and management skills remained in the main stagnant and pay rates reflected this. In terms of sectors, it is professional services, insurance and some of the smaller branded financial institutions that remain less affected by the trepidation permeating through the marketplace. While the public sector has shown small signs of recovery in some areas, it remains on the whole predominantly static. In 2011, it appeared that more organisations were appreciating the specialist horsepower, entrepreneurial mind-set and niche skills that contractors could bring to their company without affecting permanent headcount. As such, where niche technology skills were concerned and demand was particularly high, the biggest increases in pay could be seen, and this trend is expected to continue throughout 2012. UK IT hudson Salary guide 2012 13

The HOME COUNTIES and THE SOUTH WEST The beginning of 2011 looked very promising for IT recruitment in the Home Counties and the South West. Unfortunately, this level of optimism was not to be sustained. Public sector employment levels dipped further. This was compounded by private employer caution about a relapse of the UK s fragile economy in the latter part of the year, which had a noticeable effect on hiring confidence. That said the levels of growth were still the strongest they have been since the recession - growth in hiring just slowed significantly as we approached the end of the year. While it may be less significant when compared to some levels of hiring acceleration seen post-recession, we are still expecting a level of hiring growth, despite a noticeable slow down, to continue into and throughout 2012. The contracting space looks even more steadfast than the permanent recruitment market. Coming out of 2011 and into 2012 we are definitely seeing a stronger demand for IT contracting and interim resources this is probably comparable to 2006/2007 levels. This demonstrates the importance of the UK s flexible technology workforce in helping businesses meet fluctuations in demand while moving organisations forwards utilising the innovative mind-set that contractors can bring to the work environment. Interestingly, salaries and pay rates across the region have tended to remain fairly static rather than decreasing, despite a surplus of candidates now being available. However, companies are now seeking an exact fit to their requirements and therefore the demand for candidates skilled specifically in niche technologies is increasing. There are a number of areas where the requirement for highly skilled professionals is prevalent. Core development skills are still in high demand along with business IT professionals that have project and programme management, business and process analysis, together with change and transformation expertise. Continued confidence in the technical start up space and fresh investment from venture capitalists has also seen notable growth among young technology companies. 14 IT hudson Salary guide 2012 The HOME COUNTIES and THE SOUTH WEST

Across both regions, similarly, sectors such as technology, engineering and professional services (for example accountancy and HR) also appeared to be slightly stronger than the rest of the market. This trend is expected to continue throughout 2012 with the emergence of numerous entrepreneurial small to medium sized platform providers bolstering both of the regions' recovery and status as a home to talented domain specialists. On a more localised level, in the South West we saw positive growth however slow, in the life, pensions and investments sub sector in 2011. The South West continues to lead the way as a path finder and technology hub, and the region has produced some high calibre organisations and candidates that are making an international impact across software as a service (SaaS), cloud computing and smart phone application development. Strong software developers with skills in modern web technologies also continue to be in high demand. In the Home Counties we are seeing companies adopt technology with more confidence. The use and implementation of ERP and shared services are trends expected to continue as is an increase in on-shoring. Additionally, as people become more aware of certain emerging technologies, we have seen a spike in companies using SaaS, cloud computing and cyber security, and we expect these trends to continue into 2012. In the Home Counties we are also seeing notable investment and growth due to continued confidence in cities such Milton Keynes, Cambridge and Peterborough which in turn is attracting new business. Towns such as Bedford, Northampton, St Albans and Luton are all doing well to diversify and out of town business parks with strong road networks are bringing in numerous new and innovative SMEs. Despite the prevalence of demand for skills in many niche areas which may help to buoy the technology recruitment market, it is undeniable that the slowdown at the end of 2011 was due to a reduction in public sector employment and weakening consumer and business confidence. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether the Government will step in during 2012 with a view to encouraging small private sector employers to continue growing and hiring as this has always been a technology hotspot for the region. What is clear and will be a definite trend throughout 2012 is the continued perseverance of employers in demanding more highly specialised candidates to help give their organisations competitive advantage. The MIDLANDS and the NORTH The MIDLANDS A renowned hub for manufacturing, the Midlands were particularly susceptible to the impact of the recession. Recovery was slow for the region, but 2011 saw growth in sectors such as retail, ecommerce, and financial services. The manufacturing sector however, was much slower to bounce back and will continue to take time to recover. The recession had not only impacted organisations within the Midlands. Back in 2009/2010 the adverse financial conditions had caused for an overwhelming number of IT professionals seeking work. Consequentially, this pushed salaries down and they have been slow to recover. Throughout 2011, companies were focusing heavily on their web and mobile presence, which led to an increase in demand for development and infrastructure professionals; in turn creating a higher demand for support and project management roles. Interestingly however, despite the increase in demand for candidates with standard skills in roles across development, support, infrastructure and project management, these salaries stayed relatively low. It was only roles where highly skilled professionals were required, such as ERP, architecture and business intelligence, that were truly exempt from weakened salaries as they bucked the general trend and continued to see an increase. 30 IT hudson Salary guide 2012 The MIDLANDS and the NORTH

The NORTH Outside of London, the North is seen as one of the UK s biggest hubs for banking and professional services. As such, it was impacted heavily by the 2008/2009 recession. Despite this, the technology sector in the North proved resilient, and in fact, a steady increase in permanent and contract requirements for all areas of technologies was seen in the last couple of years, none more so than in areas such as development, infrastructure and project management. In terms of specific sectors, Hudson has seen growth in demand for IT professionals in the retail, entertainment, media, financial services and professional services sectors, as organisations continue to develop and build this technology hub. Despite speculation around worsening economic conditions expected in 2012, there is much potential for on going investment in technology in this region. A welcome perspective when much of the UK is forecasting doom and gloom in hiring trends. Large corporates in financial services, retail and media are investing in the Northern market. Consequently, it is becoming one of the strongest and most sought after for both work and investment. The result of this is a strengthening of job stability, salary increases and a firm demand for highly skilled professionals. UK IT hudson Salary guide 2012 31

UK IT hudson Salary guide 2012 39

SCOTLAND Throughout 2011, despite uncertainty in the latter half of the year due to the looming threat of a relapse in the UK s fragile economy, our business actually continued to grow in both our contract and permanent operations. This provides a level of optimism for the 12 months ahead. 2011 as a whole saw some interesting trends emerge, which created a clear impact on hiring patterns before the year ended. These trends are likely to continue to influence our market throughout 2012. Of these, one of the most prevalent was the continued adoption of technology by the wider population. As technology becomes increasingly mainstream; stakeholders outside of IT now consider themselves to be experts on anything technology related. As a result, the role profile of IT professionals is evolving to match the need to deal with this. For example, improved stakeholder management, communication skills, wider business knowledge and the ability to be nimble and drive change are all competencies that are more in demand than ever. However, it was not just candidates with advanced stakeholder management skills and strong adaptation to change that have seen a climb in demand. With technology evolving at such a rapid speed, specialist technical skills are a must and organisations are keen to hire candidates with these abilities. Many companies are now placing great importance on having the right people with the right traits, knowledge and skills, for gaining competitive agility. The issue now is in fact the identification, acquisition and retention of this talent. To add further difficulty to this situation for employers, in the second half of 2011, candidate availability began to dry up as more trepidation about the future of the economy surfaced. This meant that despite the upward pressure on salaries, candidates were still reluctant to leave their current roles. Thus, the quality of skills available to organisations had been, and will continue to be, affected significantly. In project management and agile development areas employers were finding it particularly difficult to identify talent for the future. These presented lucrative opportunities for candidates willing to make a move. The financial services sector in Scotland was stable and even continued to grow in certain areas, specifically those concerned with change and transformation, thereby creating even more opportunities for candidates, but gaps in quality talent for employers, in the PMO space. 40 IT hudson Salary guide 2012 SCOTLAND

2011 also saw growth in the SME space, as well as in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. New company/ consolidations and acquisitions continue to create exciting new opportunities, particularly for permanent staff to move into new roles within their existing organisations. The level of growth of contract pay was relatively static, however PMOs, enterprise architects, DBAs, and those with more technical skill sets were able to command premium rates again. We predict that for the more specialist technical roles these rates will continue to climb slowly throughout 2012. In the permanent market, for 2012 we expect demand in specific areas to be similar to that in 2011, primarily in: Project and programme management PMO Business and systems analysis Testing Agile/scrum methodologies.net developers Java developers (all flavours) Middleware and storage skills Architects It is therefore not surprising that salaries across these areas are also expected to move in an upward direction. Certainly, a primary concern for organisations in 2012 should be the quality and availability of skills within the permanent candidate pool. However, employers should be wary that salary on its own is not a talent attraction and/or retention strategy, and to treat it as such will not yield favourable results. The challenge will be to identify potential and develop talent to gain and sustain competitive advantage. UK IT hudson Salary guide 2012 41
