AP CLASSES AND PREREQUISITES AP English Gr: 12 Year Course Prerequisite: B in Honors English 3, cumulative 3.5 GPA, high marks on a timed writing administered by the department, writing portfolio review, and English department chairperson and Honors English 3 teacher approval. Students wishing to take AP English must have enrolled for a full year in Honors English 3. AP United States History Gr: 11 Year Course Prerequisite: 3.5 cumulative GPA, C or better in Geo-history and English, interest and aptitude for history and instructor approval. Students who are interested in taking the class but have below a 3.5 GPA can apply but are required to submit a second essay with their application. AP Government & Politics United States Gr: 12 Semester Course Prerequisite: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 is recommended. This semester course is taken consecutively with AP Comparative Government, which is offered in the spring. AP Government & Politics Comparative Gr: 12 Semester Course Prerequisite: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 is recommended. This semester course is taken consecutively with AP Government & Politics United States, which is offered in the fall. Students may apply to AP Government & Politics Comparative in place of Economics with instructor approval if space is available. 2
AP Human Geography Gr: 10-11 Year Course Prerequisite: An A or B in Geo-History or Honors Geo-History, completed application and instructor approval required. A 3.3 cumulative GPA is recommended. Students with a GPA below 3.3 must submit answers to supplemental questions AP Macroeconomics Gr: 12 Semester Course Prerequisite: 3.5 overall GPA recommended. COLLEGE OF THE SISKIYOUS ONLINE CLASSES EARLY COLLEGE CREDIT PROGRAM Bishop O Dowd High School is working with the College of the Siskiyous to allow O Dowd students to take college level online course work that will be transferable to all UC and CSU schools. Many out of state schools and private universities accept credits from California Community Colleges as well. Students can earn between 3-23 units of transferable college credit through this program. Some of the benefits of the program include: Cost-savings on college course work Guided transition to college level work College scheduling flexibility COST OF THE PROGRAM $ 40 per course Textbook (cost will vary) TRANSFER OF UNITS The California Community College (CCC) courses we have selected are transferable to all UC and CSU schools. We have selected courses that can be applied to the general education requirements of most campuses. If you re considering attending a private or an out-of-state school, call the admissions office of the universities in question and ask about the transfer of California Community College units. APPLICATION TIMELINE For fall classes, the application period is late spring (April). For spring classes, the application period is late fall (November). COURSES OFFERED ANTH 1010 (FORMERLY ANTH 1) INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY 3 units, 3 lecture/3 lab hours Advisory: ENGL 1001 or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 1001. This course is designed to present an overview of human cultures and the many remarkable ways in which humans adapt to their environment. The course includes sections on languages, archeology, ancient history and modern cultures, with an emphasis on living traditional cultures. (AA, CSU, UC) 4
HUM 1001 (FORMERLY HUM 1) INTRODUCTION TO HUMANITIES A broad introduction to the major forms and types of artistic expression: sculpture, architecture, painting, philosophy, literature, drama, dance, film, and music. (AA, CSU,UC) PHIL 1001 (FORMERLY PHIL 1) INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY This class introduces students to major Western philosophical issues and methodologies. It is a chronological presentation of archetypical philosophers thought concerning knowledge, reality and values. Topics include the sources and limits of knowledge, the nature of reality and the self, and examination of fundamental beliefs about ethics, religion, science, language, art, society, politics, and the meaning of life. (AA, CSU, UC) PSY 1001 (FORMERLY PSY 1) GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY Advisory: ENGL 1001. This is a basic course introducing psychology as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes through the exploration of major theories and concepts, methods, and research findings. Topics include biological bases of behavior, perception, cognition, learning, emotion and motivation, development, personality, social psychology, psychological disorders and therapies, and applied psychology. (AA, CSU, UC) SOC 1001 (FORMERLY SOC 1A) INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY Advisory: ENGL 0950. An introduction to the study of Sociology including its basic concepts, theories, and methods. Topics include analysis and explanations of different social systems, cultures, socialization, deviance, groups, social stratification, race, gender, minorities, and the family.
