601/8498/X IAO Level 3 Certificate in Web Design and Development (RQF) A summary of the qualification s content This is a regulated qualification designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills that support web design and development within a variety of industries. You could benefit from this qualification if you are currently working within the IT industry, or are looking to develop your web design skills which can then be applied to a range of industries. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. Although, this qualification is suitable for those working within a technical role, which can be within a number of industries and job roles. The knowledge and skills you will develop from this qualification will ensure you understand the fundamentals of web design and development. The subjects it covers include: JavaScript Applying Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Networking fundamentals Website Diagram and Design Using GUI and HTML for Website development The qualification is made up of 22 mandatory units. The total credit value of this qualification is 25. You will receive around 40 hours of guided learning. All of this learning is related to developing the skills and knowledge to support web design and development. Knowledge, skills and competencies this qualification can help you develop Below is an overview of these units and the knowledge, skills and competencies you can gain from them. Mandatory units Applied JavaScript: The aim of this unit is to build on the knowledge of JavaScript and apply the techniques in interesting and creative ways. You will be able to use JavaScript to develop interactive forms, understand security issues and modify X/HTML using JavaScript. Applying Cascading Style Sheets (CSS): The aim of this unit is to understand the underlying concepts of the latest version of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and will show you how to apply CSS to enhance the effectiveness of a web page. In addition, you will understand the core principles of CSS and be confident in applying the basic and advanced functions of CSS. over the internet, including appropriately conducting webcasts, understanding social networking and web 2.0 technologies whilst exploring the ethical and security issues when communicating via the internet. Configuring an email client to send and receive email in a workplace context: This unit provides the knowledge and skill needed to use email services successfully whilst learning about additional functions of the email software. You will configure emails to clients using the knowledge learnt and evaluate the effectiveness of email communication. Essential JavaScript Principles and Practices: The aim of this unit is to provide an introductory guide to the working principles and practices of JavaScript. You will understand the characteristics of JavaScript, common programming practices and functions of the programme whilst learning about the variables and data that is produced by JavaScript. JavaScript Programming Techniques: The aim of this unit is to provide an intermediate guide to the working principles and practices of JavaScript. The skills learnt from this unit will enable you to use JavaScript statements to control program flow, use JavaScript language objects and create expressions whilst learning how to debug and troubleshoot JavaScript code. JavaScript Technology Extensions: The aim of this unit is to apply JavaScript extensions to build interactive web pages. Upon completion of this unit, you will understand JavaScript libraries, be able to use JavaScript and AJAX to create interactive web applications and identify alternatives to XML-based AJAX. Network maintenance and issues: The aim of this unit is to understand how to maintain a network effectively by performing and understanding network maintenance issues. This unit teaches you how to understand internet security issues, the principle of networks in relation to security and be able to deal with performance issues which affect internet clients. Following this, you will be able to implement elements to manage network-based client operating systems to ensure correct solutions. Principles of Database Concepts: This unit provides the knowledge required to understand database concepts. Key elements of the unit look at the differences between relational and non-relational databases, being able to identify database vendors and understanding the purpose of SQL when querying databases. Principles of Internet Security: This unit provides the knowledge required to understand the factors which affect internet security, including ethical and legal issues. You will have the opportunity to use technologies which allow safe browsing online. Principles of networking fundamentals: The aim of this unit is to understand the basic fundamentals of networking. On completion of this unit, you will be able to understand basic data communication components and understand the role of networking hardware and be confident in configuring common hardware during operations. their responsibilities. You will be given information relating to a variety of job roles and opportunities available. This unit will provide you with skills to confidently search for career opportunities in the Information Technology industry. Server side scripting on web servers: The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand how server side scripting is applied to create database connectivity. Upon completion of this unit you will understand the knowledge of languages used to provide database connectivity to websites and be able to run a web server. Understanding how to use HTML5: This unit provide the knowledge, understanding and skills needed use HTML5 to aid development of website structures. You will be able to use various document formats and be given the opportunity to design a webpage using HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Understanding Internet Architecture: The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of how communication takes place over the Internet. The unit focuses on understanding the infrastructures required to access the internet and the common communication protocols in delivering basic internet services. Understanding Project Management in Information Technology: The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand the concepts of project management and how to use its software appropriately. Upon completion of this unit you will be able to understand the elements of project management and the importance of documenting all processes within a project. Understanding Web Browsers: This unit provides knowledge and understanding when using different web browsers and when understanding their functionality. The functions and components of URN and UNI will be understood and time will be spent learning about the functions of websites and how to navigate between and within websites. Using GUI HTML for Website Development: The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skill on how to use GUI based HTML editors to rapidly develop websites. Using Internet Services: The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skill to confidently use different network and internet services. By understanding how these services work, it will allow you to communicate more effectively and work with clients to understand their needs and find efficient solutions to problems. Website development, planning and testing: The aim of this unit is to give you the opportunity to learn the processes involved in planning and developing websites. You will be able to deal with copyright and ethical issues when creating webpages. This unit provides you with the skills to develop a website. You will be given the opportunity to present your website to a panel to gain feedback. Website Diagram and Design: The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand the issues involved in website design, as well giving you the opportunity to develop your own websites. files, use colour and design on web pages and understand extensible mark-up language (XML) to aid creation of the website. Wireless networking and privacy protection: The aim of this unit is to provide you with the opportunity to understand and set up a wireless network as well as explain the personal privacy issues relating to the internet. This qualification compared to others we offer We also offer the following qualifications in IT: 600/7550/8 IAO Level 2 Certificate in IT User Skills (ITQ) (QCF) 600/7557/0 IAO Level 3 Diploma in IT User Skills (ITQ) (QCF) The above qualifications focus on Information Technology directly and aim to meet the needs of learners who are working or wanting to work within IT or ICT across a range of sectors. The Level 2 and 3 IT User Skills qualifications provide learners with the opportunity to develop their IT skills for personal use or in preparation for employment or career progression. Both of these qualifications cover broad IT fundamentals, yet they do not give the learners the opportunity to specialise solely in web design and development. The Level 3 Certificate in Web Design and Development is more suited to learners who are looking to specialise in Web Design and Development. This qualification is transferable and can be applied to a range of industries and job roles. This qualification provides the learner with the essential skills, knowledge and understanding to work on web developments and networking basics. It covers aspects such as web technologies, JavaScript, HTML, internet security and Cascading Style Sheets. If you achieve this qualification, you could progress into or within employment in a number of web design and development roles and/or continue your study in this or other areas. Learners who complete this qualification may go on to further study in related areas such as: 600/7557/0 IAO Level 3 Diploma in IT User Skills (ITQ) (QCF) 601/3515/3 IAO Level 3 Diploma in Business and Administration (QCF) How this qualification can help you in your web design and development career This qualification will help you gain the knowledge and skills specific to working within a web design and development role. If you are already employed in this setting it could help progress your career by providing evidence of your knowledge and skills gain through this qualification. Web design engineer: In this role you may be required to aid website design, support with email and online communication to clients and prospective clients. Whilst other responsibilities may include; creating banners and images across websites, affiliates and social media whilst supporting all creative projects to support business growth. Web developer or webmaster: In this role, you will need an understanding of internet architecture and will be required to write and debug JavaScript. You will also have the opportunity to support development of Rich Internet Applications within your department, such as HTML5 and JavaScript, You will need to have a competent understanding of the full software development lifecycle. Software developer: In this role, your responsibilities may include designing and testing software and products, designing new features and platform components from specified requirements and writing technical design documents. From the descriptions above, it is clear that this Level 3 qualification is exceptionally transferable and the skills involved are applicable to many job roles. Through the mandatory units you will learn the knowledge specific to your current job role or learn new skills to aid your progression into a new role. This qualification will help you successfully add those skills to your remit and progress within your career.
