Objectives Overview While every module in the BSN Completion Program has obvious course objectives and, less obviously, personal objectives, the Leadership / Management in Nursing Module incorporates a third group: program objectives. We have identified certain abilities that define the expanded role of the BSN graduate, and we need to document if those abilities are being evidenced by our students. With this in mind, students are asked in their weekly Goals/Objectives of their practicum to demonstrate these abilities. The abilities are spread out during the five weeks of the experience. The objectives are as follows: Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to managing and leading including management theory, role development, legal and ethical issues, strategic planning, goal setting, marketing, change dynamics, problem solving and decision making. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to managing the organization including types of healthcare organizations, cultural diversity, organizational structures and collective action. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to managing resources including quality and risk management, self-management of stress and time, information management and technology and financial management including costs and budgets. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to leading and managing people including communication and partnering, selecting, developing and evaluating staff, team building, delegation, conflict resolution and managing personnel and personal problems. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to consumer care including consumer relationships, care delivery strategies, patient classification, staffing and scheduling. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to managing personal resources including role transition, power, politics and influence, career management and thriving in the future. 7. Manage an individual practicum experience designed to integrate past, present and future professional endeavors with concepts presented. 8. Complete an academic portfolio designed to enhance professional advancement and document learning throughout the RNBSN Completion Program.
Program Objectives The expanded role of the BSN graduate will include the ability to: 1. Advocate for patients within the health care delivery system 2. Evaluate nursing care outcomes 3. Allocate and manage physical, fiscal, and human resources 4. Serve as a member and leader within interdisciplinary health care teams 5. Delegate and supervise patient care activities 6. Participate in political and regulatory processes 7. Participate in research and utilize research findings 8. Assume responsibility for life-long learning and plan for professional career development Personal Objectives The student will identify their personal goals/objective on a weekly basis as they progress through the practicum. There is no specified number of objectives required. They are asked to be honest and use personal integrity about what they desire to accomplish during this course/experience. Meeting the Objectives Students must demonstrate meeting all of the program objectives in order to pass the Practicum portion of this class. The Practicum weekly Worksheets are attached for your information; the students are given copies in their syllabus as well. Please note that you are to initial the goals for each week. The students will bring their goals for each week to the class preceding that week for the instructor s review and input. They are then responsible for turning in the completed worksheet when that week is complete.
Instructions to Preceptors Overview A practicum of 29 hours is a required component of the course. The practicum is intended to be individually designed as to offer participants an opportunity to develop management/leadership skills that enhance but do not entirely duplicate one s professional experiences. The design of this course has been intended to respect the experience factor that each student contributes to the learning environment in their individual cohort. It is impossible to adequately represent the myriad of personalities and work experiences comprising student groups. Therefore, students are encouraged to make a self-assessment of individual learning needs related to nursing management, and apply the course content to meeting those individually defined needs. You should be interested in assisting students in developing a meaningful practicum, which integrates the course content with their needs. Student Responsibilities 1. The student will locate a Preceptor and arrange the details of the practicum experience to fulfill course requirements. 2. The students will perform appropriate practicum services as agreed upon and monitored by the Preceptor. 3. The student will be required to submit, in class, a weekly practicum worksheet. These are worth a total of 60 points 6 weeks at 10 points each. 4. The student will complete a Practicum Project due the final night of the course. This will be graded by the instructor and is shown here for Preceptor information only. Content: a) The project document needs to contain the following elements: Purpose Overall objectives of practicum (at least six) Weekly goals/objectives signed by preceptor (on worksheets) Journal entries for each week describing how the goals/objectives were met (on worksheets) Narrative summary of the project methodology Evaluation b) The Project evaluation should contain: What organizational theories did you utilize in the practicum? What worked and what did not? How were the overall objectives met? Describe in detail. What differences has the practicum made in your character development as a nurse manager? How will the nursing profession benefit by the changes in you as a result of this course? c) Preceptor evaluation (form attached)
Oklahoma Wesleyan University Responsibilities 1. OWU will be responsible for the educational programs of students assigned to the Preceptor. 2. OWU will provide upon request A letter/proof of RN licensure in the state of residence Proof of personal malpractice insurance for each student A physical form on record with proof of rubella immunization, a negative TB Mantoux test or chest x-ray, Hepatitis B immunization completed or in process 3. OWU will be responsible for the proper conduct of the student during the practicum experience with the Preceptor as governed by the rules and regulations of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Preceptor Responsibilities The cooperative relationship between the Preceptor for the RN-BSN completion student and the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Division of Nursing is agreed to for purposes of education and practicum experience. Oklahoma Wesleyan University, through the RN-BSN student, will provide limited clinical services to attain specific and limited goals to be defined with the Preceptor. If at all possible, the Preceptor should be a Baccalaureate-prepared RN with current practice/licensure in their state of residence, and will retain full responsibility for the care of all clients as applicable. 1. The Preceptor will provide, insofar as possible, a clinical experience for the RN-BSN Completion student that will enable them to fulfill their responsibilities for the course. 2. The Preceptor will provide necessary orientation, supervision, and guidance in the practicum activities of the student. 3. The Preceptor will maintain administrative and professional supervision of the student insofar as his/her presence affects the operation of the University and/or the direct or indirect care of clients. 4. The Preceptor will provide, without cost to Oklahoma Wesleyan University or the student, required clinical experiences. Service provided to clients by the student would accrue to the Preceptor s total service record. 5. The Preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student. This will be given to the student to take to class the final week of the course and given to the instructor, in a sealed or unsealed manner at the Preceptor s discretion.
