Why an MBA in Healthcare Management? name Dr Jaap van den Heuvel MBA position Programme Director country The Netherlands According to management consultant Peter Drucker: Healthcare is the most difficult, chaotic and complex industry to manage today. To address this complexity we believe that, in the near future, we will need more healthcare professionals who can play a prominent role in managing their healthcare organisation. To support professionals like you in further developing your management career, the Amsterdam Business School has designed an MBA in Healthcare Mangement that is part of the Amsterdam MBA. Lecturers in the Amsterdam MBA programme are scholars at the top of their field. In their lectures they link theory to practice, bring the business world into the classroom and take their students out into the business world. With this MBA in Healthcare Management the Amsterdam Business School offers you a unique opportunity to take the next step in your healthcare career. The changes in healthcare services especially in the Netherlands are propelled by two strong forces: budgetary constraints and the wish for transparency and improvement in quality and patient safety. While quality and patient safety have gradually become a part of institutional strategies and medical curricula, systematic education in business administration for medical professionals is lacking. This is something that needs to be changed since most healthcare institutions especially hospitals still promote a medical professional in the lead as a concept. The Amsterdam Business School has designed a two year, part-time programme to help senior healthcare industry professionals effectively bridge the gap between their medical and management responsibilities. Why an MBA in Healthcare Management? Developed in close cooperation with the UvA s Academic Medical Center (AMC), VU University s Medical Center (VUmc) and the VU University Amsterdam (VU), our programme is uniquely positioned to provide topnotch executive education for professionals who are determined to take the next decisive step in their careers. This MBA has been created with a broad perspective in mind. Its aim is to provide professionals with the conceptual and practical tools necessary to address strategic management challenges in the healthcare industry. The courses in the MBA will introduce professionals to general state-of-the art perspectives on business and management as well as more specific elements, in addition to addressing recent developments and best practice in the healthcare industry. The course material on offer has a high degree of practical relevance.
What is the Programme Structure? Curriculum The curriculum is broadly applicable in the healthcare industry and is based on a solid foundation of core courses in general management. The curriculum also includes courses that are rooted in the healthcare industry. The students will follow workshops to improve specific skills related to negotiation, conflict management, presentation and writing. In-Company project In order to graduate, students must effect a real improvement in their own organisation by way of a project. This project involves analysing a healthcare problem and proposing adequate solutions to it, together with the problem owner within the organisation and under the supervision of a faculty member assigned by the MBA in Healthcare Management programme. name Prof. M.M. While these professionals are often respected doctors and nurses, as leaders and administrators they need to learn more about introducing essential business practices into their or ganisations. Business innovation in particular will need to comprise much more than the occasional departmental reorganisation or lean project. The University of Amsterdam s strength lies in its ties with the academic university hospital, its strong Faculty of Economics and Business and an internationally oriented business school. Amsterdam has two university medical centres that are part of a federation that includes six other Dutch university medical centres, pooling extensive knowledge in research, patient care and business. Amsterdam also hosts a wide spectrum of healthcare services ranging from private enterprises to diagnostic laboratories and specialised oncology centres. This provides a wealth of experiences and ideas for the upcoming generation of leaders in healthcare.
What is the Return on My Investment? name Dr Lisette te Velde position Surgical Oncologist, MBA HC student, class of 2014-2015 country The Netherlands I have always wanted to obtain an MBA, this MBA in Healthcare Management of the UvA s Amsterdam Business School is a perfect opportunity. As medical specialists, we are facing many extra responsibilities and are expected to know much more than what we were taught at medical school. We are expected to be people managers and accountants as well as fully understand the external environment - insurance companies, health inspectorate, ACM, NZA - where we operate. I have chosen the MBA HC in Amsterdam because I like the fact that 60% of the classes we take are part of the regular MBA. This means that we get a very broad foundation in business administration. Our final project will consist of coming up with an improvement case that will create revenue of at least 100,000 per year once it has been implemented. With costs increasing in the healthcare industry, such a project seems a critical exercise for everyone involved in the medical profession. Career Perspective Obtaining your degree will equip you with the skills and expertise to lead your unit more effectively or to become a successful division manager or a CEO in a healthcare organisation. You will be able to manage the balance between business results, healthcare quality and safety. The programme gives you excellent knowledge of the environmental dynamics of your organisation and sound business principles that help you lead your organisation towards operational excellence and lasting results.
