Over the last 12 months we have taught students from 68 countries, for example Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Brazil, China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, France, Germany, Latvia, South Korea, Qatar, Russia and many more. 6 7 Why study in Manchester? Manchester is located in the north-west of England, it is a modern and vibrant city, rich in culture and history. Student life Music and Festivals It is home to world class education centres, such as the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. With over 85,000 students, the city is well set up for student life and is an ideal place to study. Manchester is one of the UK s most affordable places to live as a student. The city is well-known for its famous music scene and fantastic nightlife. The Jazz Festival and the International Music Festival are famous for attracting tourists from all over Europe. Sport For those who like the outdoors, a short train ride away there are many national parks and the Peak District offers an opportunity to go hiking or mountain biking. Manchester has excellent transport links to Chester, York, London or Edinburgh. In June 2015 Manchester was voted best sporting city in the UK by ESPN. If you are a fan of football, rugby, cycling or aquatics you will be at home in Manchester. The two successful football clubs Manchester United and Manchester City are only a short journey from the city centre. Location History and culture Manchester is the home of the industrial revolution and the first computer. Communicate School provides a variety of English language courses for all levels. On your first day you will meet a member of the academic team to discuss your needs and create a suitable study plan. Monitoring your progress Communicate School monitors students progress in a few ways: Progress tests you will take progress tests every two weeks. They cover the skills of: writing, grammar, vocabulary and reading. Homework you will be encouraged to do some work outside the school. Tutorials every 4 weeks you will have a one-to-one meeting with your teacher who will give individual advice on what skills you have improved and what you should work on. Certificate In class the teachers constantly provide correction and feedback. Mock exams if you study an exam preparation course, the teacher will occasionally set a trial exam in the class so you can see how close you are to your desired outcome. You will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement at the end of your course. It will outline the length of the course and your level of English.

Teachers use the communicative teaching method to provide energetic, lively and fun lessons. Age: 15 + Level: A1 to C1 Develop your speaking, listening and conversational skills Communicate more confidently Lessons per week: Standard 18 or 24 Intensive - 30 (1 lesson = 50 minutes) Use correct grammar and improve writing skills Start date: Any time - continuous enrolment Build up vocabulary Teaching method: Communicative Language Teaching Improve your pronunciation Other cost: Course book 25 each. Learn about British culture and traditions Other information: Complete beginners will be recommended to take one-to-one classes before joining the elementary group course. Students on level C1 may be recommended to attend a mix of General English and exam preparation classes. 12 13 Key Facts IELTS Group size: Average 8 (Maximum 12, in July & August 15) Age: 15 + Level: Minimum intermediate B1-C2 At Communicate School, we run a selection of exam preparation courses for IELTS and the Cambridge exams. In the Academic IELTS course students practise exam techniques for all four parts of the exam speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course covers academic vocabulary, writing essays, giving opinions, comparing and summarising ideas, skimming, scanning and teaches strategies to achieve the highest possible score. Students can see their progress by taking regular IELTS mock tests. Lessons per week: Standard 18 or 24 Intensive - 30 (1 lesson = 50 minutes) Start date: Any time continuous enrolment Teaching method: Exam techniques and Communicative Language Teaching Other cost: Exam 150, course book 25 each, Books can be borrowed for short courses Other information: The course may be a mix of IELTS exam preparation and General English classes depending on the level I learnt a lot of grammar and IELTS techniques. You will practise grammatical structures and vocabulary which you learnt in the previous lesson. New material you will use a course book or authentic materials such as magazines or leaflets. The syllabus of a course is designed to help students develop confidence and fluency when communicating verbally and in writing. Consolidation this final part of the lesson aims to use all the new knowledge in an interactive language game or a communicative activity. Key Facts Group size: Average 8 (Maximum 12, in July & August 15) Age: 15 + Conversation Classes The aim of the conversation classes is to improve your spoken English and pronunciation. Lessons focus on real life situations and topics like shopping, inventions, travel, environment and many more. Teachers will help improve your accuracy and fluency by carefully correcting mistakes and encouraging practice. Conversation classes are normally combined with General English or Exam Preparation courses where students want to focus on improving their fluency in speaking English. 20 21 Student Welfare At our reception you will meet the student support officers. Their role is to assist you with any enquiries and make your stay in Manchester an enjoyable and memorable experience. They will help you settle into the school and give practical advice on everyday issues. Do not hesitate to ask for information on any subject, we are here to help. Accommodation The student support team can help you with: Accommodation Airport transfer Finding a doctor Using public transport Living in Manchester Social activities Opening a bank account UK visa questions All accommodation has been inspected by the school accommodation manager. Accommodation can be organised for students who are 16 years old or older. Homestay Host families are located 20-45 minutes from the school. They can be a couple or a single person with or without children. Most of our families host one or two students, some of them up to four students. Ask me about the best places to visit in Manchester. When you apply, we will ask you about your accommodation preferences, for example if you have any dietary requirements or allergies. This will help us match you with the most suitable family. Dora Student Support Officer Breakfast and dinner are provided. You will have a room for yourself and internet access. Use this opportunity to speak English with your hosts every day and learn about British culture first hand. Residential You will have your own room in student halls. You will cook for yourself and share a kitchen with other students. There will be plenty of opportunity to socialise and speak English. Staying in residential accommodation is a great chance to integrate into the international student community in Manchester.

22 23 Enrolment Steps Application and additional information Visa Information Some students may need to obtain a visa to study in the UK. You can check if you require it by visiting: www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa. We can help in organising a short-term study visa. Once you pay a deposit for your course, we will issue an acceptance letter which you will need to attach to your visa application. Bank holidays The school is closed on the following days: 24th December 2015 3rd January 2016, 25th March, 28th March, 2nd May, 30th May, 29th August and for 10 days during Christmas 2016. Students do not pay for the bank holiday classes; they will be added on at the end of their course. Travel Insurance We highly recommend that all students purchase travel insurance before travelling to the UK. Communicate can arrange this through Guard.me International Insurance if requested.
