Faculty Teaching and Learning Center May 2016 IN THIS ISSUE What s New with the FTLC? Faculty Technology Group The Faculty Teaching and Learning Center (FTLC) is pleased to announce the development of a new faculty group focused on utilizing technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience. The purpose of the Faculty Technology Group is to provide an opportunity for instructors to share their experiences using technology as well as identify new and innovative tools that can be integrated into the face to face or virtual classroom. Group members will also provide valuable insight into the technology resources currently available at the university and assist the FTLC in determining future tools to fund. It is our hope that through the collaborative efforts of this group, we will be able to identify best practices related to technology, tools to improve instructor efficiency, and strategies to increase student engagement. If you have some creative ways of using technology or would like to learn more about how to integrate technology into your classes, please consider joining the Faculty Technology Group. Online Learning Consortium Conference 2016 Director Instructional Development, Charlene Hu, and Instructional Designer, Anissa Fontenot, attended the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Conference in New Orleans, LA. The conference was held April 20 22, 2016 and focused on a variety of topics concerning online learning in higher education. General sessions focused on challenges facing higher education in ensuring quality instruction. There was a good balance between broad issues such as encouraging student communities in the context of residential programs and instructional methodologies. FTLC staff also focused on attending sessions geared toward faculty training and professional development. Attending these sessions provided opportunities to explore how other higher education institutions around the United States are implementing programs and trainings to support faculty. One interesting model incorporated numerous tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Zoom, WordPress and YouTube to reach faculty through a number of different mediums. Based on the information gained from attending the OLC conference, we are working to identify ways to improve training and support our faculty. Summer Institute 2016 The 6 th Annual Summer Institute for Online Teaching is now accepting applications for participants. The institute, which will be held June 20 th 23 rd and August 8 th 11 th, will familiarize participants with the Quality Matters standards and how they apply to online/hybrid course design. Participants will also share ideas and strategies in the design and teaching of online/hybrid courses. CSUB faculty and instructors can attend the institute for free and will receive a $600 stipend for successfully completing all the requirements. The first week of the institute will focus on designing the course utilizing Quality Matters standards. Throughout the week, staff from the FTLC will be available to assist instructors in developing their courses and providing technical support. The second week, instructors will present their completed courses for review and must only be present for one hour to do so. The lab will remain open during the second week, however, for any instructors who would like to work on finalizing their courses prior to the review.
