Adobe Creative Suite 2 makes collaboration with clients and colleagues more efficient, more fun, and ultimately more supportive of the entire design process. This document introduces the new features in Adobe Creative Suite 2, including high-level descriptions of the new features in Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS2, Adobe InDesign CS2, Adobe GoLive CS2, and Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional. It concludes with pricing and availability, a description of what comes in the box, and system requirements. For detailed information about the new features in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and GoLive CS2, as well as Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Adobe Stock Photos, please see the documents indicated in each respective section of this guide.

Fuel your ideas Adobe Creative Suite 2 helps remove technical roadblocks to the creative process so that designers can create artwork, pages, Web sites, and more with greater fluidity and ease. The key way in which Adobe Creative Suite 2 gives momentum to the design process is through the new Adobe Bridge visual file browser, which is a greatly enhanced version of the File Browser found in previous versions of Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Bridge not only allows creative professionals to quickly manage and locate assets but it also provides access to the new Adobe Stock Photos service and lets designers achieve more consistent color across Adobe Creative Suite 2. Finally, centralized and streamlined Adobe PDF creation is also a tremendous new productivity feature in Adobe Creative Suite 2. Adobe Bridge visual file browser Adobe Bridge is the hub for productivity, imagery, and inspiration in Adobe Creative Suite 2. Accessible from within Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, and GoLive CS2 as well as independently, Adobe Bridge allows designers to efficiently organize, browse, and locate the assets they need every day to create content for print, the Web, and mobile devices. Adobe Bridge keeps native PSD, AI, INDD, and Adobe PDF files, as well as other Adobe and non-adobe application files, at designers fingertips, and is a natural gateway to Adobe Stock Photos. With drag-and-drop ease, designers can place assets into their layouts as needed, preview them, add valuable metadata to them, and track them using Version Cue. Adobe Bridge also automates a variety of traditionally labor-intensive tasks with built-in scripts that work across components of the suite. An efficient file-management system that gives designers direct access to their creative assets as well as offers greater control over them, Adobe Bridge greatly expands the power of Adobe Creative Suite 2. Accessing Adobe Bridge Designers often need to access assets when they re in the middle of creating an image composition in Adobe Photoshop, or maybe when they re designing a page in Adobe InDesign. They ll need a different background image, or a client s logo, or perhaps to import some text. When a designer is so fully engaged in being creative, even the few rote steps required to find and preview a necessary asset can slow their productivity to a crawl. So Adobe Creative Suite 2 makes it easy: designers can launch Adobe Bridge from within Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, and GoLive CS2 and automatically jump to their home directory in the Bridge browser window, where they can locate the file they need. 2 Launch Adobe Bridge from the File menu in Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, or GoLive CS2, or click the Browse button in the Control palette of those applications. With a minimum of disruption to their creative flow, designers now have visual access to all of the files on their hard drive or network. To make more onscreen space available at any time, designers can toggle on a compact mode for Adobe Bridge, reducing it to a floating palette that can be accessed from any component of Adobe Creative Suite 2. This makes it easier to drag files out of Bridge and in layouts or comps. Previewing assets The Adobe Bridge browser window features navigational and informational panes on the left and a preview area on the right. The pane in the upper left corner is where designers choose the location, such as their hard drive, a network folder, or a Favorites directory. As they navigate to the desired location, the preview pane on the right updates interactively, showing thumbnail previews of asset files if they ve been embedded with the file.

3 Previews in Adobe Bridge can be resized using the slider at the bottom of the window, and you can click a button to choose Thumbnails, Filmstrip, Details, or Versions and Alternates view. Previews in Adobe Bridge are highly interactive and can be customized. They can be resized by simply dragging the slider at the bottom of the window. Designers can select from Details view, Filmstrip view, or Versions and alternates view, each of which displays the preview and asset s metadata in a different way. When a thumbnail is selected, the Preview pane offers some basic details, such as its file type and creation date and time; additional information, if available, appears in the Metadata pane at left. Metadata information also appears when you roll the cursor over any thumbnail. Panes can be resized for optimal viewing, and Adobe Bridge even supports previews of multipage Adobe PDF files. Adobe Bridge displays previews of multipage Adobe PDF documents, as shown in this Filmstrip view.

Adding and searching metadata Thanks to support for industry-standard XMP metadata, designers can add useful information to a file and view that information in Adobe Bridge without having to open the file. Metadata may include everything from digital image capture information such as ISO speed and aperture value to GPS data to copyright informations. 4 Adobe Bridge features extensive support for XMP metadata, including descriptive information, GPS data, digital camera data, and stock photo data. With complete, up-to-date metadata information, designers can conduct complex searches based on metadata criteria to quickly find the assets they need. For example, they can search for all InDesign files that use a certain Pantone color, or a particular font. Then, when the designer locates the desired asset, he or she can open it in its originating application by double-clicking the thumbnail preview in Adobe Bridge. Bridge even launches Microsoft Office applications. One-stop shopping with Adobe Stock Photos Adobe Bridge lets designers search across a network and by multiple metadata criteria.

Adobe Stock Photos Availability At the time this document went to press, Adobe planned to make Adobe Stock Photos available for purchase in the following countries. This list, however, is subject to change before the launch of Adobe Creative Suite 2. For the final list, please visit www.adobe.com at the time of ship of Adobe Creative Suite 2. Australia Austria Belgium Canada China Denmark Finland France Germany Great Britain Hong Kong Ireland Italy Japan Mexico The Netherlands New Zealand Norway Portugal Singapore South Africa South Korea Spain Sweden Switzerland Taiwan USA One-stop shopping with Adobe Stock Photos Stock photography is a key component of professional page layouts and Web sites, but acquiring it has historically been a tedious task that involves visiting multiple Web sites, conducting time-consuming searches, losing track of images, and purchasing from several agencies for a single project. Enter Adobe Stock Photos, which makes the process much more convenient. Adobe Stock Photos, accessible from within Adobe Bridge, is an exciting new service to help get designers creative juices flowing. Offering designers one-stop shopping for high-quality, royalty-free stock images from within the familiar Adobe interface, Adobe Stock Photos is an efficient and convenient way for creative professionals to view, try, buy, and manage stock images from some of the world s leading image libraries or to simply get inspired. Search and browse stock images Adobe Stock Photos lets creative professionals search for and browse stock images from a selection of premiere stock suppliers without ever leaving Adobe Creative Suite 2. With a document open in InDesign, for example, designers can jump to Adobe Bridge, seamlessly search collections from multiple stock suppliers, browse the results, and download low-resolution comps into their designs without missing a creative beat. Then they can rename the comps to be more intuitive for their own workflow, and Adobe Stock Photos will preserve the link to the original image for when the designer is ready to purchase the high-resolution version. Adobe Stock Photos lets designers view, try, and buy stock images from some of the leading stock photo libraries. 5 Purchasing and managing stock images When their client approves the layout, the designer can purchase and download full-resolution images in a single transaction from within Adobe Creative Suite 2, even if they are buying images from more than one source. Because usage rights are centralized in Adobe Stock Photos, pricing is straightforward and terms and conditions are consistent, making the process easy to manage. Once the comps and/or high-resolution images are downloaded, they re accessible through Adobe Bridge like all other assets, and can be previewed, organized, and searched for easy retrieval and reuse. Images acquired through Adobe Stock Photos include extensive metadata information, which travels with the image and can be searched, customized, and accessed throughout Adobe Creative Suite 2. For more information about Adobe Stock Photos, see the Adobe Stock Photos Reviewer s Guide. With Adobe Stock Photos, designers can download and purchase stock images from multiple suppliers in a single transaction.

6 Help Center and Expert Support Adobe Stock Photos is just one way that Adobe Creative Suite 2 boosts designers productivity. Adobe Help Center, a centralized repository for quick, consistent, and in-depth how-to information for all of the components of Adobe Creative Suite 2, is another. In addition, Adobe Expert Support gives designers direct access to senior Adobe support professionals to help troubleshoot technical problems and provide how-to advice for times when designers have an idea but they re not sure how to execute it in Adobe Creative Suite 2. For more on Expert Support, visit www.adobe.com/support/expert_support/main.html. The Adobe Help Center, available from within the components of Adobe Creative Suite 2, provides access to free how-to information as well as to fee-based Expert Support. Consistent color onscreen across Adobe Creative Suite 2 Designers don t want to manage color; they just want it to look right, onscreen and in print. With Adobe Creative Suite 2, it does. Adobe Creative Suite 2 significantly improves the reliability of color across its components: using Adobe Bridge, designers can synchronize their color settings for Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, and InDesign CS2 so that they are consistent. So, for example, a designer can create a gorgeous composite in Photoshop, set some type on it in Illustrator, and then place the completed work of art in an InDesign layout and the colors will appear consistently in each. In addition, new features in Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 improve creative professionals control over rich blacks and CMYK values. Synchronizing color settings Designers can synchronize color settings for Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, and InDesign CS2 using the Suite Color Settings dialog in Adobe Bridge. Adobe Bridge offers a wide selection of presets for many common workflows, such as North America prepress or North America Web/Internet settings. Once suite-wide color settings are turned on, colors even spot colors appear consistent in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and designers don t have to worry about color management any more. Synchronize color settings for Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, and InDesign CS2 in this one dialog in Adobe Bridge.

Creative professionals can speed print production and improve the final printed quality of their work by selecting a standard press characterization, such as U.S. Prepress Defaults or Japan Color for Newspaper; by customizing a preset using options specified by their prepress partner; or by simply using a preset shared by their prepress partner. This will ensure closer matching between a designer s desktop proof and their printer s press characteristics, speeding the proofing process and reducing unwanted (and potentially costly) surprises at the last minute. Rich blacks A new preference in Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 controls the onscreen appearance of black, including rich blacks. Rich blacks, which comprise 100% black plus some CMY values, can result when RGB blacks are converted to process color. Rich blacks look darker than 100% K blacks, and now designers can choose whether they want to see and print rich blacks accurately (as dark gray) or consistently, as they have in the past (solid black). InDesign CS2 and Illustrator CS2 let designers display rich blacks accurately (as dark gray) or consistently (as pure black) both onscreen and in print. 7 CMYK control in InDesign CS2 Some designers prefer to do it by the numbers. That s why there s a new policy in the color settings in InDesign CS2 to preserve the CMYK values of imported images. If, for example, a designer converts an image in Adobe Photoshop and wants those numbers to stick, they will the designer doesn t have to turn off color management to work the way they want and still achieve consistent color. Profiles still travel with the image, in case they re needed later in the workflow, but designers will experience fewer warning dialogs, which reduces confusion and instills greater confidence in the reliability and predictability of color across components of the suite. The Color Settings dialog in InDesign CS2 includes an option to preserve CMYK values in images imported from Photoshop.

Consistent Adobe PDF creation One of the many enhancements to an Adobe PDF workflow in Adobe Creative Suite 2 is new global Adobe PDF export presets that allow for consistent Adobe PDF creation from across components of the suite. Whether designers save an Adobe PDF document from Photoshop or Illustrator, export one directly from InDesign, export HTML as PDF from GoLive, or use Distiller, they choose from a selection of shared presets. This greatly simplifies the process, letting designers create Adobe PDF files consistently, reliably, and easily. Adobe Creative Suite 2 ships with six default presets for a variety of common workflows, including Smallest File Size, for Adobe PDF files being distributed on the Web or for e-mail-based review; High Quality Print, which is suitable for design comps; and PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, for prepress workflows that use those print industry standard formats. Presets are stored in a single location, which makes them easy to manage, and they have a common interface, which makes them easy to use. They can be customized for specific workflows, loaded into any component in Adobe Creative Suite 2, and shared with clients and print production partners. Adobe Creative Suite 2 features shared presets and a consistent interface for easy creation of Adobe PDF documents. 8 The PDF presets in Adobe Creative Suite 2 are even shared by Acrobat Distiller, so if designers create their Adobe PDF files using the Adobe PDF 7.0 Printer in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or GoLive, or if they print to Adobe PDF from non-adobe applications, they will still achieve consistent results.

Design with agility Adobe Creative Suite 2 includes the full, new versions of the world s leading design tools. Packed with new features, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, GoLive CS2, and Acrobat 7.0 Professional let designers create content for print, the Web, and mobile devices with greater freedom and flexibility than ever before. Here are brief overviews of the key new features in these components of Adobe Creative Suite 2. Greater control over images in Adobe Photoshop CS2 Adobe Photoshop is the benchmark for digital imaging excellence, and Photoshop CS2 introduces new levels of power, precision, and control with an exciting combination of revolutionary new features and nextgeneration enhancements. Vanishing Point, for example, allows designers to automatically adjust the visual perspective of their composites so that they can make the most of every creative impulse. Designers can also be more productive thanks to Smart Objects, which lets them non-destructively edit Illustrator artwork in Photoshop, and thanks to more intuitive and direct control over multiple-layer selection. Finally, designers can customize their Photoshop environment to suit personal preferences or project requirements, with custom menus, keyboard shortcuts, and palette locations. Photoshop CS2 pushes the boundaries of digital image editing and helps designers turn their dreams into designs faster and more easily than ever before. For more information about the new features in Photoshop CS2, see What s New in Photoshop CS2. 9 Paste Illustrator artwork as a Smart Object in Adobe Photoshop CS2, and then freely transform it without a loss of quality. New power for vectors in Adobe Illustrator CS2 Adobe Illustrator CS2 puts industry-standard drawing tools at designers fingertips so that they can create logos, artwork, packaging, maps, posters, Web graphics, and much more with ease. And Illustrator CS2 offers an entirely new paradigm for creating vector graphics, thanks to the new Live Trace feature. Live Trace, a breakthrough new tracing tool, lets designers convert scanned line-art or bitmap images to scalable, editable vector paths and anchor points in just seconds. They can also use the new Live Paint feature to easily and intuitively apply fills and strokes to artwork. And they can access all tools directly from the new contextsensitive Control palette, or open, save and share custom workspaces with palettes arranged exactly the way they want. For more information about the new features in Illustrator CS2, see What s New in Illustrator CS2. Convert bitmap images (left) to detailed and editable vector drawings (right) in Adobe Illustrator CS2.

10 Rich, versatile content with Adobe InDesign CS2 Adobe InDesign is the page layout program of choice for leading graphic designers and publishers around the world, streamlining layout and production while improving the visual quality of the final piece of work. Now InDesign CS2 delivers innovative features that once again introduce new levels of production efficiency while nurturing a flexible creative process. With InDesign CS2, designers can more easily search for and incorporate assets into their layouts using the new Adobe Bridge; save drop shadow, fill and stroke, text attributes, and other settings as object styles for quick, consistent formatting throughout a document; control the visibility of layers in imported Photoshop and Adobe PDF files; collaborate more effectively thanks to enhanced integration with Adobe InCopy CS2; and save selected text and graphics elements on a page including relative positioning as snippets that can be dropped into any layout for reuse. For more information about the new features in InDesign CS2, see What s New in InDesign CS2. Control which layers and layer comps are visible in imported Photoshop images in Adobe InDesign CS2. Standards-based Web and mobile authoring with GoLive CS2 Adobe GoLive CS2 takes Web and mobile authoring to the next level with innovative new tools for building Web sites and creating mobile content, as well as with tighter integration with the other components of Adobe Creative Suite 2. Now designers can produce Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)-based Web sites more easily using intuitive drag-and-drop CSS objects to lay out pages, significantly reducing the complexity of working with and letting designers produce visually rich sites that have all of the advantages of CSS smaller site file sizes, improved accessibility, and simplified maintenance. In addition, GoLive CS2 expands its support for mobile content and application development based on open standards such as XHTML and SVG-t, so designers can now design, develop, and deploy mobile content that adapts smoothly to a wide variety of devices. GoLive CS2 also integrates more tightly with other components of Adobe Creative Suite 2 with such new support as direct export of InDesign content to XHTML Web pages. For more information about the new features in GoLive CS2, see What s New in GoLive CS2. Adobe GoLive CS2 supports Cascading Style Sheets in a visual layout.

Effective collaboration and printing with Acrobat 7.0 Professional Collaborate more effectively with clients and colleagues and prepare designs created in other components of Adobe Creative Suite 2 for print using Acrobat 7.0 Professional. The new capability to enable commenting tools in the free Adobe Reader 7.0 expands the circle of participants in e-mail-based reviews, while improved print production features let designers generate more reliable, high-quality final output: preflighting now supports droplets for automation; print production tools let creative professionals correct common mistakes in Adobe PDF documents, such as converting RGB images to CMYK; enhanced output previews minimize last-minute problems; and improved support for the PDF/X and JDF print industry standards allow creative professionals to work together more effectively, so that everyone can meet critical deadlines and stay on tight budgets. For complete information about the new features in Acrobat 7.0 Professional, see the Acrobat 7.0 Professional Reviewer s Guide. 11 The Acrobat 7.0 Professional Print Production toolbar (lower left) lets designers correct common problems in Adobe PDF documents; droplets (upper left) automate the preflight process; the improved Preflight dialog (right) features enhanced support for the PDF/X standard. Work well with others Effective collaboration is critical to a smooth and efficient design process. Creative professionals lose valuable time each day searching for files, preparing files for hand-off, tracking feedback from clients, and many other essential tasks but tasks that nonetheless detract from time spent doing what they love to do most: being creative. Adobe Creative Suite 2 takes great strides in streamlining electronic-review and version-control processes to enhance communications between designers, their clients, and their print production partners, saving everyone time and money and helping them meet their deadlines and stay on budget. Flexible and inclusive design reviews Electronic design reviews have long been a strength of Acrobat, with features such as the capability to initiate e-mail-based reviews, robust tools that let reviewers comment on documents electronically, and the Review Tracker to manage feedback. Acrobat 7.0 Professional makes electronic reviews more flexible and inclusive with a new feature that allows even more clients and colleagues to participate. Commenting and overprint preview in Adobe Reader 7.0 With Acrobat 7.0 Professional, creative professionals can work more flexibly with clients who use the free Adobe Reader 7.0 and who don t own a full version of Acrobat. Designers simply turn on a set of Reader extensions when they initiate an e-mail-based review from within Acrobat 7.0 Professional, thereby expanding their circle of reviewers, improving their communications with clients, and streamlining the review process.

12 Acrobat 7.0 Professional allows clients or colleagues with only the free Adobe Reader 7.0 to participate in electronic design reviews. Because reviewers using the free Adobe Reader 7.0 may be unfamiliar with commenting on Adobe PDF documents, the software helps them through the process. Commenting tools appear automatically, along with instructional text, highlighted in yellow, that explains how to use them. A How To pane gives additional instructions. Instructional text (in yellow, under the toolbar) and a How-to pane (at right) guide reviewers who are using the free Adobe Reader 7 to mark up Adobe PDF documents with comments. With extensions enabled in Adobe Reader 7.0, reviewers can also toggle on an overprint preview preference. Overprint preview mode provides an onscreen simulation that approximates how blending and overprinting will appear in color-separated output. Allowing clients to see this effect in Adobe Reader 7.0 can reduce potentially costly errors that might occur later during print production. Powerful version control with Version Cue CS2 Creative professionals spend at least 10% to 20% of their time managing files finding, opening, moving, and renaming the many file versions generated in typical creative projects. That s a lot of lost hours. But creative professionals can get this time back using Version Cue CS2, the file-version manager that has been enhanced and improved in Adobe Creative Suite 2 to be more intuitive, visual, and robust. Creative professionals can now manage and share both Adobe and non-adobe project files, access historical file versions as well as version alternates, access Version Cue through Adobe Bridge, and use Version Cue to initiate Adobe PDF reviews. Simplified file versioning Version Cue lets designers access historical versions of files as well as parallel alternates of project files, including both Adobe and non-adobe file formats. Alternates give designers much more flexibility. They can create two or more versions of a comp, for example, define one as the primary version and the others as alternates, and send all out for review. Other valuable uses of alternates include creating print, Web, and foreign language versions of documents.

13 The Version Cue Save As dialog now lets designers create alternate versions of files. Collaboration and file sharing With Version Cue, designers can share file versions with peers with confidence that their work won t be lost and that edits don t conflict. For example, if a designer opens a Version Cue file at the same time as someone else on the design team, Version Cue will ensure that one version doesn t overwrite the other. When a Version Cue project file is opened, Version Cue actually creates a working copy on that individual s hard drive, and then the designer can save a new version back to Version Cue from the working copy when he or she is ready. In addition, it will store all versions of a file with consistent, clear names, to avoid the confusion that can occur when multiple members of a team use different file-naming conventions. Access through Adobe Bridge With Adobe Creative Suite 2, designers can organize, access, and search Version Cue file versions within Adobe Bridge, and preview search results without having to open the file. Version Cue workspaces can appear in the Favorites pane, making versions easier to find, and as with other assets, designers can view scalable thumbnail previews for all available Version Cue project files. They can even choose to view versions or alternates. They can identify which files are the newest versions, which files are in use, and if they re synchronized without opening the file. Other useful information includes the name of the last person who worked on the file and comments that describe what he or she did. Designers can preview versions or alternates of Version Cue project files from within Adobe Bridge (versions are shown here). The search capabilities in Version Cue CS2 have also been improved namely, designers can conduct Version Cue searches from within Bridge, and they can search on expanded metadata file information as well as search by project. When a designer opens a Version Cue file from Bridge, Adobe Creative Suite automatically launches the appropriate software depending on the file type Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, GoLive CS2, or Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional and the designer can get to work. New status bars in Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, and GoLive CS2 also let designers see the status of their open Version Cue documents at a glance.

14 The Version Cue status bar in Photoshop CS2. Adobe PDF review initiation While creative professionals can install and use Version Cue right out of the box, a host of advanced file-administration features is also available. Version Cue includes a browser-based administration utility from which advanced users and IT managers can define security options, manage user privileges, export and back up projects, and batch delete old versions of files. One of the new features in this administration utility is the capability to initiate browser-based Adobe PDF reviews and host internal Acrobat reviews on a Version Cue workspace. This can be especially useful if a designer has to cull several Adobe PDF files together to send out all at once, and eliminates the need to have a dedicated server to host online reviews, or involve IT departments to set it up. The Version Cue CS2 administration utility lets designers initiate Adobe PDF reviews.
