Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement SITE is a 501 (C)(3), socially responsible, non profit organization established to educate urban youth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). SITE promotes academic accomplishment as well as the social impact that STEM disciplines have on our community. SITE believes students in the Greater Kansas City area deserve the opportunity to have a professional STEM career. SITE s mission is to build an engaging learning environment to adequately prepare and uniquely position urban students to: 1.Realize the potential in actively pursuing a STEM career 2.Ensure they excel academically in reading and math 3.Serve as professional civic leaders in under served communities Background Statement SITE has followed an interesting path to fruition. Its founder, Mr. Mark Irvin, started The Charter School Group in 2012, after collaborating on the development of one of Kansas City s newest charter schools. Mr. Irvin s company provided general construction services and was inclusive in the strategic planning for the school. Subsequently, Mr. Irvin volunteered as a mentor for MINDDRIVE, a program focused on developing the technical and engineering skills of at-risk high school students in the urban core. This served as the catalyst for the development of a program that is focused on high growth job/career opportunities for urban youth within the manufacturing industry. Born and raised in Kansas City, with a long career in business and industry, Mr. Irvin recognized the need for dedicated development of technology and industry in our local community. In his lifework with various professional trade organizations, Mr. Irvin developed curriculum and facilitated instructional continuing education classes for licensed professionals. Mr. Irvin served as Executive Director of Are You Committed KC, a nonprofit agency with a collaborative relationship with top businessmen on property renovation. The agency also provided life skills training and apprenticeships in the skilled construction trades for at-risk youth which further deepened his commitment to both the industry and urban youth. Mr. Irvin' s commitment led to SITE's transformation to a focus on STEM science, technology, engineering and math. This focus includes offering students opportunities to access advanced intensive academic content in easily accessible means with highly skilled educators and state of the art technology, which includes the 3D printing industry. Impact Statement In 2014, SITE partnered with local advanced manufacturing businesses to promote career opportunities. Key businesses worked to address community issues to positively impact the environment and those living & working in it. SITE serves as a liaison between these businesses and students to build Kansas City s diverse and vibrant workforce. Last year, SITE accomplished the following: Conducted SITE - KC s Manufacturing (MFG) Day Event October 3, 2014. Identified key manufacturing companies to host the students in this inaugural event, and to build partnerships with the students. Top leaders were engaged to ensure a true connection with the students. Partnered with multiple KC school districts to get a representative group of students to attend; worked closely with existing Kansas City youth organizations to recruit students with high interest. SITE was offered a Day of Proclamation by KC s city council for its success on MFG Day. SITE secured funding including The United Way of Greater Kansas City to support the students in SITE s first year. SITE garnered exceptional volunteers to serve as key personnel for this project including our Board of Directors. SITE believes that when exposed to cutting edge technology, equipped with high tech skills, and provided with career options, students future s will be greatly transformed. This year s goals include: Goal 1: SITE will develop an intensive experiential learning, out-of-school program to prepare youth for careers in advanced manufacturing learning reverse engineering processes. Goal 2: SITE will coordinate its 2nd annual MFG Day tour - Day of Royal Treatment. On October 2, 2015, SITE will double the student numbers to 90 and the manufacturing facilities to 6. Goal 3: SITE is working with MFG DAY volunteers to coordinate a deeper student-engagement for its 2nd MFG Day tour by connecting schools with companies, arranging media publicity, creating lesson plans, and preparing for outcome/impact evaluations. 2
Needs Statement SITE has proven its ability to create, develop and implement engaging STEM educational activities for students. SITE is in need of operational funding to sustain and expand its academic and work-based student experiences. Currently, all of SITE s personnel that carry out its daily activities have been uncompensated financially. Specifically, funding would be targeted at operations to complete and expand our efforts this year. This would include: Curriculum content writers Fundraising personnel All student support activities, teaching supplies and materials. Two advanced trainers for the After-School-Program, instructing in mathematics and communication skills - focused specifically in advanced manufacturing. SITE will promote Manufacturing Day, annually to celebrate connecting youth to the advanced manufacturing industry in the Kansas City Metro area. Board Chair Statement I, Mark Irvin, SITE founder - It is my deepest hope and desire to inspire high school students to pursue the amazing opportunities in advanced manufacturing, 3D Printing and reversed engineering. I feel so privileged to grow up in this great city and clearly see how SITE can serve as an intermediary for our youth to access great opportunities within STEM fields. The passion that drives me for creating opportunities for our youth, keeps me up late at night and rising early in the morning. As a previous business owner, I recognize that from a socio economic perspective, supply and demand can have a dramatic impact on industry. Helping youth to understand the new advanced manufacturing industry is at the heart of this impact. As an African American and native of KC, growing up in a small family owned business environment, I see clearly the disconnect between industry and our youth. I also see how our youth are uninspired about career opportunities that are available. I have always had an inquisitive and exploratory way about my work. This has allowed me to have many professional life experiences that I am motivated to share with our urban youth. Our youth today are unaware of the opportunities that exist for them in high growth careers right in the heart of our city. I believe, and there is data to support my thinking, that only 1 of 6 parents or guardians will mention advanced manufacturing as a career pursuit. Furthermore I believe that by engaging the philanthropic, corporate, education and parental support, SITE can become a thriving, solid, acknowledged entity that inspires youth and creates life long job-to-career opportunities that help to sustain a healthful lifestyle for our youth, their families and our community. Examples of Program Success The students selected for the MFG Day Tour 2014 were 11th and 12th graders from the greater Kansas city area. Students were selected who were affiliated with Kansas City organizations (such as YMCA) and expressed an interest in learning through auditory, visual and experiential means. Students were also selected by faculty at area schools. SITE s objective for working with 11th and 12th graders was to foster junior/senior peer -to- peer relationships. Juniors and seniors were paired on the transportation coach to facilitate communication and bonding. Students also participated in a contest with cash incentives/ prizes. The contest was designed to engage the students' knowledge about the manufacturing facility next on the MFG Day Tour stop. The contest created excitement for the students and prepared them with thoughtful, engaging questions for the corporate leaders guiding the tours. 15 students from last year who are now seniors will be among the many students on MFG Day 2015! 5
