Previous Achievements 2007-2011: migrated Nokia Siemens WCDMA & LTE R&D departments from Waterfall to Agile Development methods across 3 continents and 12 countries with a total of ~4K stakeholders 2007-2009: moved all developers from Clearcase to Subversion to reduce licence cost and benefit from Open Source model & spirit (easier to find experts with git/svn than clearcase knowledge) 2009-2014: implemented continuous test and integration systems to automatically test and deploy software delivered for LTE and WCDMA for both core and radio network products (Flexi nodes e.g.: enodeb, but also HLR, MME, etc ) Ongoing (2014): Move Nokia R&D towards a DevOps mindset and introducing Continuous Deployment across test & integration departments
Case Study DevOps in Telecoms We carried out a case study across the big-4 Tier-1 network equipment vendors in Germany, UK & Finland to assess the situation of how far Agile has come since its introduction in 2007-2011 within these companies The conclusion: Agile transformed all vendors and made them more competitive. However Agile in massive companies outside IT created a pressure-cooker as long as DevOps is missing from the picture. This applies also to mobile operators. We regularily speak on DevOpsDays to drive DevOps within Telco and our reports have been published by major IT & Telco magazines such as InfoQ and TelecomsTechNews: http://www.infoq.com/articles/devops-telecoms
Case Study DevOps in Security Include Security professionals early on in the discussion to harden and analyze potential weaknesses before deployment. This allows them to continue to do their job in the ever decreasing windows of time before deployment. It gives an opportunity for Security to become a more audible voice within the R&D process and therefore improve the reliability of services. Bring more awareness about Security to Developers and Operations and cross-pollinate ideas between them. Many Security activities such as automated pen-testing, virtual patching and continuous vulnerability assessment, are already carried out with a DevOps mindset. DevOps @ Telco is the future! We bring plenty of experience in rolling out process improvments. Agile, Scrum & DevOps) look very simple on paper and are easy for small IT firms, but... Implementing such changes in a massively distributed R&D environment such as Telco or Automotive is a non-trivial effort that must be carefully planned for a seamless and successful migration both from bottom-up and top-down. We would love to talk to you about the current state of Agile and DevOps in your company and help you move to a Continuous Improvement model and mindset. Thank you!
