24 th INGEDE Symposium 11 February 2015 in Munich INGEDE International Association of the Deinking Industry Update on INGEDE s activities Dr Ulrich Höke Andreas Faul, Axel Fischer, Marion Klabunde Who is INGEDE? INGEDE is the organisation of the deinking mills. INGEDE was founded in 1989 by 12 companies. Currently 29 paper mills are members of INGEDE, who utilised nearly 8 million tons of paper for recycling in 2014.

INGEDE Structure 2015 INGEDE s main topics Collection of paper for recycling No commingled collection Separate graphic paper collection wherever feasible Securing quantity and quality Recyclability Deinkability (flexo, inkjet, liquid toner, UV) Removability of adhesive applications Raising awareness in the paper value chain
INGEDE s key activities External relations, lobby work Committees, presentations, seminars, internet, PR, Exchange of experience Working groups, Symposium, project meetings, databases, statistics Project work Own projects, mainly for recyclability if possible with additional partners from the value chain (e. g. DPDA) Steering and active involvement in publicly funded projects (e. g. Bifa, EcoPaperLoop) Tendency to replace own spending by public funding INGEDE Methods Major achievements INGEDE Method 11 in worldwide use Dialogues with stakeholders in the paper value chain guidelines and scorecards Recyclability criteria in ecolabels for printed products Recognition of their importance Raising awareness at printers, converters and their suppliers (supports own external activities)
Major achievements Revision of EN 643 is beneficial for deinkers Increased awareness and consideration of deinkability in the paper value chain (by own external activities and additional funding) Lobbying process and recent achievements
Benefits of INGEDE s work for members Activities to maintain deinkability reduces the need to compensate for lower DIP brightness and cleanliness Activities against increasing complexity of deinking processes which require more equipment and energy and result in lower yield Activities to secure quality of paper for recycling (unwanted material, moisture etc.) maintain yield and reduce disposal costs External Relations 2014 European Recovered Paper Council Ecolabels Presentations at conferences Further external activities and public relations
European Recovered Paper Council Scorecard for the removability of adhesive applications adopted in spring 2011 Deinking Scorecard in effect since 2008, revised in 2009, second revision in 2014, annex of the Scorecard under discussion Development of new European Declaration on Paper Recycling (for years 2016 to 2020) Ecolabels for printed products These ecolabels request deinkability and removability of adhesive applications based on INGEDE Methods and ERPC Scorecards UBA developed a new Blue Angel RAL-UZ 195 for printed paper products, we have the pleasure to have Almut Reichart here for a presentation In 2014 INGEDE issued 26 confirmations on deinkability and 10 confirmations on removability of adhesive applications

INGEDE Method 2 refers INGEDE Method 1, for this reason also an editorial revision of INGEDE Method 2 was required. INGEDE developed a method for the identification of printing technologies in entry inspection of paper for recycling. INGEDE Method 18p a preversion is available and will be completed with the results of INGEDE Project 145 14. The method is available for members only.
Outlook 2015 Challenges ahead Collection of paper for recycling quantity and quality Search for a feasible and sustainable system to collect graphic paper for recycling Get more transparency about costs and revenues in the area of collection and sorting On-going activities for Deinkability of critical print technologies UV, liquid toner (HP Indigo), further improvement of inkjet implementation of EN 643 and its new (sub)grades recyclability assessment of re-dispersible adhesive applications INGEDE International Association of the Deinking Industry INGEDE Office Gerokstr. 40 74321 Bietigheim-Bissingen Germany Phone +49 7142 7742-81 Fax +49 7142 7742-80 Mail office@ingede.org INGEDE Public Relations Oetztaler Str. 5 B 81373 München Germany Phone +49 89 769-2332 Fax +49 89 769-2338 Mail info@ingede.org www.ingede.org
