Electronic Device Use and Email Policy: College level writing is expected in all communications. Before submitting discussion responses, copy/paste your discussion responses into word processing program and run spell/grammar check. There is currently a popular trend of "relaxed manner" - abbreviations, poor grammar, lowercase, etc. - always practice formal professional writing with "positive tone". In turn, if instructor sends constructive criticism, assume instructor's intent is well- intended as sometimes intended positive tone in critique is misconstrued. Instructor also encourages frank feedback on your likes/dislikes of the music. If you have a negative opinion, it will be respected as much as positive opinions. Instructor would also greatly appreciate if you could notify on typos, broken links, vague questions, etc. You have the promise of a non- threatening learning environment - there are no dumb questions in this class - mistakes are O.K. - this is a "no- guilt, no- blame zone." All of us bring varying degrees of musical competency so your instructor promises a high degree of patience to each and everyone, especially to those with the simplest level of musical background. In summary: If you have had zero exposure to music education - not to worry. 6

Late Assignment Policy: There are bi- weekly deadlines on threaded discussions as opposed to other online courses, which often have only end- of- week deadlines. Assignments must be turned in on time except in the case of an excused absence. E- mail instructor within 24 hours following close of week with documentation verifying excused absence. Computer tech issues must be ironed out in advance of course because having tech issues is not considered "excused absence" as there are computer labs on PBSC campuses. If you do not live near a PBSC campus, please have backup plan - friend's computer, another computer in your home, visit to wireless coffee shop, etc. In the past, instructor has had trouble with some students beginning assignments in final few hours leading up to weekly deadline, then complain about work load. Preferable to tackle assignments on opening day of each new week. Make- up Exam Policy: Two late passes allowed during entire course where homework deadline may be postponed without having to obtain excused absence documentation. In order to obtain late pass, notify instructor, and Bb assignment will be reopened but you cannot solicit instructor on late pass later than 24 hours past deadline - as it will put you behind in course. Late passes do not apply to Mid- term/final test/gordon Rule assignments/discussion - only to Connect+ and web tours. Since discussion threads interact with other students within weekly time frame - they are not reopened. Please reserve late passes for when you REALLY need them. For majority of class who delivered assignments on time, disregard when your Bb calendar re- announces due dates (reopenings for excused absence) on materials you have already completed. Mid- term Gordon Rule essays may be turned in late but will receive 10% deduction of paper's value per day late. Since final grades are due on day after final essay deadline, there is no late policy on final Gordon Rule essay. Mid- term Test requires documentation of excused absence. Closing message from instructor: Music Appreciation historically has often been coined an "easy course" - this course is an exception. Assignments will be rigorous (while entertaining) so students must have a disciplined work habit in order to receive an "A". Time needed towards this course is same as an on- campus class. A general academic standard in most PBSC courses is two- three hours a week of homework per credit hour therefore a three credit course can potentially be as much as nine hours of homework but this course is not that demanding. You are however expected to put in a significant amount of homework time as consistent weekly participation is critical to a successful outcome. For those of you who have taken online courses in the past, you will have little trouble with content but for new users, it may initially seem daunting - please take a deep breath. After getting a sense of the predictable layout combined with diligently checking in, devoting time, I promise you will find the course manageable. For all of you, there may initially seem like a lot of assignments. As mentioned before, beginning with Week 2, the course is laid out with two smaller homework exercises per chapter's time period - versus having you read three chapters then taking one huge quiz covering all three chapters. So please don't be overwhelmed at number of quizzes. I have found that students receive a deeper awareness of a time period if they read its chapter, then drill it, followed by another chapter, etc. Bb tracks the number of hours one spends so attend CONSISTENTLY, documenting to teacher that you are devoting time to class.
