Gordon Rule Class This class has been designated as a Gordon Rule class for writing. This means that the course has two significant writing assignments. Please see the web page at: http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/learningoutcomes/documents/gordon_rule_statement_student.pdf To fulfill PBSC's Gordon Rule requirements, you are assigned two essays: 1. 1000- word mid- term essay (due midnight June 14); 500 points - 5% of final grade 2. 1000- word "Concert Review" final essay covering a live classical or jazz music concert; this final essay (due midnight August 2) - 1000 points - 10% of final grade. Attendance of LIVE concert is required to fulfill Concert Review essay - 1000 points. Both Gordon Rule assignments' total weight - 15% of entire course grade. Detailed instructions on essays available for download in BlackBoard (hereafter referred to as "Bb") during Week 1 and Week 2. Submit Gordon Rule essays only through Bb's SafeAssignment folders - unless solicited by instructor, please do not submit through instructor e- mail. Professor s Information Name: Ruth Ann Galatas, D.M.A. Telephone: 561.835.8049 - does not receive text messages Faculty Web Page: http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/faculty/index.asp?id=galatasr Please e- mail instructor through Bb only - preferably not through Panther - so we may keep an archive of correspondence and definitely not through McGraw- Hill Connect+ since McGraw- Hill does not sync with course's Bb e- mail. Office Location: TBA Email: Galatasr@palmbeachstate.edu Office Hours: There is often a need to have direct communication with instructor regarding confusion in areas of study, clarification of grades, etc. Please feel free to contact instructor at any time; if you receive voicemail, your call will be returned within 24 hours. Simultaneously, send instructor e- mail via Bb e- mail alerting that you are trying to make contact via telephone. In the very unlikely event, you do not receive a call back from instructor within 24 hours, assume instructor did not receive your call (very unlikely scenario but please call again). In the extremedly unlikely event, you do not hear from instructor within few days, please notify department - contact at bottom of syllabus. Check your e- mail on regular basis to see if you have received communication from instructor. Information on REQUIRED Textbooks: Title Edition Author Publisher ISBN Title as listed in PBSC Bookstore: 3rd Katherine Charlton McGraw- Hill ISBN 9780077580742 COLM PK MUL1010:"Experience Edition Most students benefit In PBSC bookstore, there may be a It is very Music" 3 CD s and & CNCT+ ($) from purchasing "Special Edition of Experience important CNCT+ is the online companion called "Connect+ ebook, which can be Music" that has different cover to directly accessed and than covers that appear online. As Music". Later in syllabus is detailed instruction on purchase purchased in Wk 1 of long as Charlton textbook says "3rd how to sign up for McGraw-Hill Connect+ Music, 3rd course. edition" it will work for course. hereafter referred to as "Connect+". Some students edition may need to purchase physical book through bookstore because of financial aid. Most students benefit ($) from purchasing ebook, which has different ISBN than PBSC bookstore - ISBN: 0077412273 Template Date - July 2013 2

TEXTBOOK (con't) Katherine Charlton's textbook is described by its publisher as "An innovative program that best meets the fundamental challenges of the Music Appreciation course. Through its online "Connect+ Music" the student develops strong listening skills by experiencing musical pieces paired with unique interactivities. All combined, these elements help students develop a deeper understanding that will prepare them for a lifetime of musical experiences." Least expensive option is ordering digital ebook (comes with Connect Plus Music - or referred to as Connect+ ) ISBN: 0077412273 To access ebook and Connect+: Enter Blackboard and click directly on top of following titles Lessons (in left menu) Week 1: Elements of Music Pre- Course Quiz - Connect+ (which transitions to McGraw- Hill Connect+) Credit card - or if you cannot purchase at start of course, choose free trial Excuse of delivering assignments late because "Connect+ has not been obtained" will not be allowed as McGraw- Hill offers free trial period. More expensive option is buying physical book ISBN: 9780077580742, packaged with access code to Connect+ at no additional charge and includes CDs containing our listening selections (exact same listening selections as digital Connect+) - so CDs are redundant - but great to retain towards building a permanent music library. In one bookstore 3rd edition textbook, there is a disparity between CDs' track numbering and Connect+ digital questions so please depend only on Connect+ audio files. At no point will you need to use refer to physical CDs when doing homework. Most expensive option is buying used physical book/cds then having to separately buy the required digital Connect+ for additional $60. Either way you go, it is not possible to succeed in course with physical book only - you must also have McGraw- Hill's digital Connect+. So if purchasing "used", be assured of working registration code for Connect+. It is not recommended to buy "used." To be assured of working Connect+ code, purchase physical textbook at PBSC bookstore (comes with Connect+ code) or digital ebook (also comes with Connect+) directly from McGraw- Hill's site. Tech Support Instructor covers Music Appreciation content only so all tech support related matters, resort to the following: If you have issues while registering Connect+, please contact McGraw- Hill s tech team: http://www.mhhe.com/support. Issues regarding Bb navigation, contact PBSC tech support (links found on Bb login page). 3

Course Learning Outcomes: As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to: - Define and/or describe the elements of music. - Define and/or describe the historical periods of music. - Define and/or describe the stylistic characteristics of each period. - List and/or identify composers and compositions. - Using developed listening skills, analyze musical compositions for stylistic characteristics. Full Course Outline - Click on the following link: Course Outlines and enter the course number (no space between the prefix and the number). Class Information Methods of instruction: - Instructor multi- media presentations; instructor guided threaded discussions - Group activity discussions - Weekly listening and homework exercises through Connect+ - Weekly quizzes; Mid- term Test; Final Test; Assessment (Fall only) - Web tours - Two Gordon Rule essays Academic Dishonesty Policy and Penalty for Violation: This instructor adheres to the college policy on academic dishonesty. Using another author's content on essays/ threaded discussions is considered "plagiarism". After submitting Gordon Rule essays through Bb's SafeAssignment, check for matching content. If percentage is higher than 20%, re- word essay and continue to submit until you have reached appropriate percentage. Assignments, Tests, Quizzes and Final Exam Schedule, with percentage/points of grade: As in all courses, it is very important to stay on top of textbook's reading assignments - two to four chapter assignments per week. Bb & Connect+ build upon each new chapter. Week 1 s Chapters 1-3 are presented in one Connect+ homework but beginning in Week 2, read one assigned chapter then do corresponding Bb/Connnect+ assignments, then read next chapter followed by that chapter's corresponding assignments, etc. etc. - Threaded discussions 1-2x discussions a week; each equal 50-100 points. If you were physically attending this course on- site, on- campus, there would be a two- class attendance per week. Similarly in Bb, bi- weekly threaded discussions (sometimes called "threads") are designed to bring you into course two times a week, to help stay in touch with week's assignments: 1/ First response to instructor guided questions in discussion(s) - Wed deadline for first response(s) 2/ By Thursday noon, after instructor has had a chance to bounce off your first response(s), re- enter discussion(s) after Thursday noon and before Sunday midnight, respond to instructor's response - if required - instructor may see that your first track is on right track and not require a response. 3/ Same thing as No. 2 on responding to classmates - After Thursday Noon (not before): Respond to two classmates' postings - Sun midnight deadline. 4

IMPORTANT: After you install first response before Wed noon, avoid installing responses to fellow students same day wait until after Thursday noon. During grading, instructor will be looking for two different dates in your responses, otherwise point deduction for installing prematurely. We want as many people in on the conversation and many times, students do not post until shortly before deadline. "Working in groups" occasionally is practiced in discussions. Please mark personal calendar for first responses' Wed midnight deadline for each week of course. (Instructor is unable to post Wed deadline notices in course calendar as discussion is still "in play" towards Sun midnight deadline.) Discussion(s) are located at end of entire LESSON content - installed towards end to encourage perusing through ALL pages of week's assignments, thus obtaining a thorough overview of what is expected during week s work. SUMMARY ON DISCUSSIONS: First response - Wednesday midnight Re- enter discussion(s) after Thursday Noon Second wave of responses - 1. instructor (if required) 2. responses to two classmates All other week's assignments listed below - due Sunday midnight: - Weekly Connect+ Listening/Homework Assignments covering facts/music of each chapter; equal 50-200 points; due Sun midnight. Completion of each and every Connect+ assignment is critical towards preparing efficiently for mid- term and final tests, which are on a timer. Mid- term and final tests use Respondus and web cam. - Web Tours - 2-4x per week; each equal 50-200 points; due Sun midnight. Web tours assist in developing listening skills through video presentations/archival footage. - Gordon Rule essays: 1. Mid- term essay equals 500 points - due June 21 2. Concert Review essay equals 1000 points - due Aug 2 Detailed information on Gordon Rule essays available in Week 1's Bb. Essays total point count - 1500 points are heavily weighted in final grade. Immediately after beginning class, prioritize looking at list of concerts provided in Week 1 or if you do not live in South Florida, please look around your community for a LIVE classical or jazz concert. Choose a program where MOSTLY classical or jazz music is presented. The concert can be attended at any time during course but in second week threaded discussion, you will be asked to commit to a specific performance where you state artist, date, venue, slated repertoire. - Mid- term test - equals 500 points; two- hour timed - open book; test review provided in week prior to exam week; requires web cam and Respondus - Final test - equals 500 points; Two hour timed - open book; test review provided in week prior to exam week; FINAL TEST SCHEDULE: DURING LAST WEEK OF CLASS, THERE IS FLEXIBILITY ON WHEN YOU TAKE FINAL TEST AS ONLINE FINAL TEST IS DUE MIDNIGHT OF COURSE'S FINAL CLASS DAY; final test requires web cam and Respondus 5

Grading: Total points of entire course assignments - 10,000 - Weekly/listening quizzes, threaded discussions/group assignments - 75% of 10,000 points - Mid- term Test, Final Test - 5% each - Total for both tests: 10% of 10,000 - Two Gordon Rule Essays - 15% of 10,000 1. Mid- term Essay covering two project 5% - 500 points 2. Concert Review Essay covering LIVE concert 10% - 1000 points Incomplete assignments, which do not meet weekly deadlines, receive a failing grade. Letter Grade Points Percentage (if applicable) A 9000-10,000 90-100 B 8000-9000 80-90 C 7000-8000 70-80 D 6000-7000 60-70 F 0-6000 0-60 P N S U Class Policies Attendance: Professors are required to take attendance. Work week opens 12:00 A.M. Mon mornings - closes Sun midnight 11:59 P.M. Instructors are required to withdraw students who do not attend course during first couple of weeks. You are authorized as having "attended" by completing an assignment. You will be withdrawn for excessive absences if you do not meet this minimum attendance. General attendance of entire session will be graded by your completion (or non- completion) of assignments. Bi- weekly deadlines on discussions (1-2 discussions a week) are partly designed to incentivize consistent attendance; first wave of response(s) deadline - Wednesday midnight; second wave of response(s) deadline - Sunday midnight. All other assignments due Sunday midnight. Also to monitor your online activity, a tracking system is built into Bb, providing instructor with record of your time spent in course. Electronic Device Use and Email Policy: College level writing is expected in all communications. Before submitting discussion responses, copy/paste your discussion responses into word processing program and run spell/grammar check. There is currently a popular trend of "relaxed manner" - abbreviations, poor grammar, lowercase, etc. - always practice formal professional writing with "positive tone". In turn, if instructor sends constructive criticism, assume instructor's intent is well- intended as sometimes intended positive tone in critique is misconstrued. Instructor also encourages frank feedback on your likes/dislikes of the music. If you have a negative opinion, it will be respected as much as positive opinions. Instructor would also greatly appreciate if you could notify on typos, broken links, vague questions, etc. You have the promise of a non- threatening learning environment - there are no dumb questions in this class - mistakes are O.K. - this is a "no- guilt, no- blame zone." All of us bring varying degrees of musical competency so your instructor promises a high degree of patience to each and everyone, especially to those with the simplest level of musical background. In summary: If you have had zero exposure to music education - not to worry. 6

Late Assignment Policy: There are bi- weekly deadlines on threaded discussions as opposed to other online courses, which often have only end- of- week deadlines. Assignments must be turned in on time except in the case of an excused absence. E- mail instructor within 24 hours following close of week with documentation verifying excused absence. Computer tech issues must be ironed out in advance of course because having tech issues is not considered "excused absence" as there are computer labs on PBSC campuses. If you do not live near a PBSC campus, please have backup plan - friend's computer, another computer in your home, visit to wireless coffee shop, etc. In the past, instructor has had trouble with some students beginning assignments in final few hours leading up to weekly deadline, then complain about work load. Preferable to tackle assignments on opening day of each new week. Make- up Exam Policy: Two late passes allowed during entire course where homework deadline may be postponed without having to obtain excused absence documentation. In order to obtain late pass, notify instructor, and Bb assignment will be reopened but you cannot solicit instructor on late pass later than 24 hours past deadline - as it will put you behind in course. Late passes do not apply to Mid- term/final test/gordon Rule assignments/discussion - only to Connect+ and web tours. Since discussion threads interact with other students within weekly time frame - they are not reopened. Please reserve late passes for when you REALLY need them. For majority of class who delivered assignments on time, disregard when your Bb calendar re- announces due dates (reopenings for excused absence) on materials you have already completed. Mid- term Gordon Rule essays may be turned in late but will receive 10% deduction of paper's value per day late. Since final grades are due on day after final essay deadline, there is no late policy on final Gordon Rule essay. Mid- term Test requires documentation of excused absence. Since final grades are due on day after final test deadline, there is no late policy on final test. Withdrawal Policy: "Work week" opens 12:00 A.M. Mon morning - week closes Sun 11:59 P.M. As instructors we are required to withdraw students who do not enter course during first two weeks. You are authorized as having attended by completing an assignment. You will be withdrawn for excessive absences if you do not meet this minimum attendance. In final weeks, last day to withdraw: July 10, 2015. It is up to the student to withdraw if he/she chooses; instructor will not implement withdrawal; students who fails to withdraw will receive "F" grade. Students are expected to go online regularly, work cooperatively with instructor/groups in threaded discussions, participate fully in assignments, and turn in all work on time. Getting started in your PBSC Music Appreciation course: - Print syllabus and place hard copy next to your computer so you are constantly aware of what is expected of you. After completing textbook reading, all other assignments (including Connect+) are navigated inside Bb. - Explore different parts of Bb menu on left. - Click directly on Lessons Week 1 Elements of Music Instructor's Notes & Mini- lecture (Use arrow in upper right hand corner of window, to navigate thru pages) Mini- Lecture: Intro to Notation (Read and watch video) Music Notation Quiz (Install notes from mini- lecture video) 7

Pre- Course Quiz - Connect+ (Pre- Course Quiz is your first Connect+ assignment - will transition seamlessly to Connect+ by clicking directly on top of text "Pre- Course Quiz". For those who did not buy physical book, it will request register/pay. For those who purchased physical book 3 rd edition, install code - hoping you bought new physical book so you have authorized code. If only wanting to sign up to Connect+ and not take Pre- Course Quiz yet, signing up will not immediately require you to submit quiz for final grade may be later submitted - but I do encourage you to go ahead and take Pre- Course Quiz because it is brief and will later be given maximum grade gratis. This exercise is designed only to give instructor awareness of your general musical experience. If you have none, not to worry, as again everyone will be given full credit during instructor's manual grading next week - a full 50 points for simply participating in quiz. Chapters 1, 2, 3: Elements of Music (holding folder announcing following exercises) Connect+ Chapters 1, 2, 3 Homework Week 1 Web Tour (videos to view and listen) Gordon Rule Assignments Information (1. very important download/printing of two docs required for mid- term/final essays; 2. download only of concerts doc required - printing optional Week 1 Discussions: (extensive info on discussions provided earlier in syllabus) 1. Let's Meet Each Other 2. Gordon Rule Assignments Information Extra- credit Quiz VERY IMPORTANT: After completing assignments, please hesitate for a few seconds until you receive message assuring assignment has been accepted. Click on "Back to Blackboard" yellow tab, returning you to remaining Bb assignments. An outline of all subsequent week s content will be provided each week in Blackboard but will follow similar work load as above. Closing message from instructor: Music Appreciation historically has often been coined an "easy course" - this course is an exception. Assignments will be rigorous (while entertaining) so students must have a disciplined work habit in order to receive an "A". Time needed towards this course is same as an on- campus class. A general academic standard in most PBSC courses is two- three hours a week of homework per credit hour therefore a three credit course can potentially be as much as nine hours of homework but this course is not that demanding. You are however expected to put in a significant amount of homework time as consistent weekly participation is critical to a successful outcome. For those of you who have taken online courses in the past, you will have little trouble with content but for new users, it may initially seem daunting - please take a deep breath. After getting a sense of the predictable layout combined with diligently checking in, devoting time, I promise you will find the course manageable. For all of you, there may initially seem like a lot of assignments. As mentioned before, beginning with Week 2, the course is laid out with two smaller homework exercises per chapter's time period - versus having you read three chapters then taking one huge quiz covering all three chapters. So please don't be overwhelmed at number of quizzes. I have found that students receive a deeper awareness of a time period if they read its chapter, then drill it, followed by another chapter, etc. Bb tracks the number of hours one spends so attend CONSISTENTLY, documenting to teacher that you are devoting time to class. Bb gradebook also provides instructor with record of your strengths and weaknesses so expect an e- mail when instructor observes faltering. "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. - Calvin Coolidge. I look forward to teaching each and everyone of you and hopefully providing a meaningful academic experience. Thank you for choosing Palm Beach State College, Dr. Galatas 561.835.8049 8

Distance Learning Requirements Computer Systems Your computer system resources must be compatible with the Learning Management System (LMS) used to deliver/manage course content. System Check (analysis) is provided on the course login page at https://palmbeachstate.blackboard.com. Your computer needs to be configured per recommended settings.
