2013 CENSUS REPORT: Global Data Center Space 2013
GLOBAL DATA CENTER SPACE 2013 Top 3 data center markets account for almost half of all global data center space. In spite of a slowdown in the amount of build, (and in the case of the UK a slight decrease in the amount of white space over 2012 levels), the top 3 data center markets of the US, Japan and the UK still account for almost half of all global data center space. Whilst the BRIC economies and particularly China and India have witnessed large amount of build over the past 12 months they have yet to reach the levels of the established data center markets. Globally there has been a modest 3.7 % increase in the amount of data center white space this year, illustrating the slowdown in build in many of the more established data center markets. Indeed some countries, particularly in northern, have witnessed a slight decrease in total white space, a result of corporate and government consolidation projects, increased use of outsourcing and energy efficiency measures, coupled with less new build activity than in previous years. This deceleration in global white space growth does not however mean it is the end of the road for the data center industry. Instead it is an indication of the maturation of the market as a whole, especially in those countries with an established facility base. Many counties, in particular those further behind in the data center market lifecycle, continue to witness double digit growth in terms of white space and will continue to wer Consumption do so into Averaged 2014. North America Although responsible for the largest percentage of global data center white space, North America, in line with other mature markets, has seen a deceleration in growth levels over the past 12 months. White Space growth across the region was 3.6%. The small amount of growth was fuelled by tax incentives in 17 states and the build out of large commercial colocation facilities and there is predicted to be a similar growth level over the coming 12 months. As a region with 13.9% growth is responsible for the second largest % growth in data center white space over 2012 levels. Most countries in the region have witnessed double digit growth over the past 12 months. This is in keeping with the regions status as an emerging market in terms of its data center industry. Brazil continues to account for the largest proportion of space in the region at almost 40% of the market. China is now the 5th largest data center market globally in terms of white space and with 24% growth in white space over the past 12 months its continued place in terms of space is assured. However, the region as a whole has seen mixed growth at the country level this year with an overall growth level of 4.9%. The established data center market of Australasia has seen a slight decrease in the amount of data center white space and Singapore and Hong Kong have witnessed very modest increases. Indonesia space continues to grow at 10%. Home to the second and third largest data center markets in terms of white space,, particularly Northern, is one of the most established data center markets globally. The region does however contain a number of countries with less developed data center industries and therefore the region as a whole has seen mixed growth. Whilst some of the developed markets have seen slight decreases in white space over the past 12 months (UK, Italy, France) others have witnessed double digit growth (Turkey, Russia, Poland). Again, as with other regions there is a marked difference in growth rates from the developed to the less established markets.
