Webinar Agenda What is IPEDS? Working with IPEDS Data What data are included in the Data Center Demonstration of the IPEDS Data Center Questions?

What is IPEDS? Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System Interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) IPEDS gathers information from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid programs.

What data are collected? IPEDS is a series of 9 interrelated survey components that fit together like a puzzle

The Pieces of IPEDS IPEDS is a series of 9 interrelated survey components that fit together like a puzzle IC Institutional Characteristics: Directory information, admissions, tuition and pricing; questions that determine other components (IC Header)

The Pieces of IPEDS IPEDS is a series of 9 interrelated survey components that fit together like a puzzle EF IC Fall Enrollment: Student counts by level, R/E/G, age, migration; retention rates

The Pieces of IPEDS IPEDS is a series of 9 interrelated survey components that fit together like a puzzle EF IC E12 12-month Enrollment: Unduplicated headcount, instructional activity

Working with the data What data are available through the IPEDS Data Center? Demonstration of Data Center Trend Generator Comparing Institutions Survey Data File Download

Data Available in the IPEDS Data Center IPEDS Data 1986 2011 HEGIS Data (Higher Education General Information System, IPEDS predecessor) 1980 1984 1985 Selected HEGIS data not in the data center is stored at the International Archive of Education Data, University of Michigan

IPEDS in the Data Center Frequently Used / Derived Variables Institutional Characteristics Admissions and Test Scores Student Charges Fall Enrollment 12-month Enrollment Completions Graduation Rates Student Financial Aid Finance Human Resources

Data Releases Preliminary Data Similar to previous Early Release data Available about 5 months after data collection closes Provisional Data Has imputations and additional editing Available about 3 months after release of Preliminary Data Final Data Available after institutions have had the chance to revise data in Prior Year Revision System (about a year after Preliminary Data release)

2011 IPEDS Universe Title IV eligible institutions = 7,386 Reporting is mandatory 3,056 are 4-yr; 2,332 are 2-yr; 1,998 are <2-yr 2,038 are public; 1,891 are private, not-forprofit; 3,457 are for-profit 4,805 are degree-granting Not Title IV eligible Reporting is not mandatory 173 submitted at least one survey

IPEDS Trend Generator Quick and easy tool to look at IPEDS data over time to answer commonly asked questions. Data are shown by institution type, student type, or state depending on the question asked. Allows users to create a trend, show graphs, and download or print data.

Trend Generator Demo How much revenue did Title IV private for-profit institutions have in 2009-10? How does that compare to that sector s revenues for 2004-05? (Show a Trend) How much of that revenue came from tuition and fees? (Create a table) What do the revenue amounts look like by institutional level? (Create a table)

Trend Generator Excel Output

Compare Individual Institutions Retrieve and compare data for multiple institutions for the variables and years of your choice Can view on screen or download in CSV format

Compare Institutions Demo Question: How many Bachelor s degrees in Economics were granted to men and women for a selected group of institutions in the 2010-11 academic year?

Compare Institutions Demo Step 1: Select type of data (provisional, final, preliminary) Step 2: Select institutions Either enter name/unitid OR Create EZ Groups Or By variable Uploaded list

Compare Institutions Demo Step 3: Select Variables Browse/search variables Choose from my variables (if any already selected) Create Derived variables Upload variables

Data Center CSV output: Bachelor s Degrees in Economics granted at 4-year institutions in Washington, DC, by gender, 2010-11.

Download Survey Data Files Download complete survey files in zipped CSV file format Includes: Data file Data dictionary Read program file for statistical packages (SPSS, STATA, SAS)

Download Survey Data Demo Select type of data (preliminary, provisional, final) Select Survey Year and Area Select specific data file Tip: Download dictionary first to make sure it has the variables you want Download file in desired format (CSV or STATA) Download read program

Download Survey Data Demo Open statistical program, Use read code to import the data file The data files include UnitIDs, the survey variables, and imputation flags. If you want institution names or other institutional information you will have to merge on the Institutional Characteristics data file by UnitID.

Another tip: If you are interested in merging together multiple survey data files to create a database, you may want to use the existing IPEDS Analytics: Delta Cost Project Database available at http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/deltacostproject/.
