CHAPTER 1 Introduction The System Management Console is a utility that provides system information and access to log files that can be used to aid in troubleshooting system issues. Conventions Used in this Documentation The text in this documentation is formatted to make it easy for you to identify what is being described. Where a term is defined, the word is represented in italics. Field names are shown in bold. Menus and menu choices are shown in bold italics. All menu choices have accelerator keys, which enable you to select the menu choices using the keyboard. The underlined letter represents the accelerator key for that menu item. Accelerator keys are written, for example, <Alt>, <C>. Keyboard keys are represented in angle brackets. For example: <Tab>, <Ctrl>. Keyboard key combinations are written in two ways: <Ctrl> + <Z> means hold down the first key and press the second <Alt>, <C> means press the first key, then press the second Buttons on the screen are represented in square brackets; for example: [Modify], [Cancel]. CHAPTER 2 The System Management Console From the System Management Console you are able to view information regarding your system s configuration including specifics of your OnGuard installation and overall computer information. The information viewed in the System Management Console can be used for troubleshooting purposes. When contacting Technical Support you may be asked to run the System Management Console so that the support specialist can get a better understanding of your system. Getting Started The System Management Console is located in the OnGuard directory in the Windows Start menu. The System Management Console does not require any authentication to be run. How to Start the System Management Console 1. Click the Start button, then select All Programs > OnGuard 2013 > System Management Console. 2. The System Management Console opens. Computer Information The specifics of your computer configuration are found in this section of the System Management Console. Technical support may ask for information located here. The following information is displayed when viewing the summary of your computer s configuration: Operating System and Service Packs - used to verify that the installed version of OnGuard is running on a supported Operating System with the correct service packs. Computer name, Domain Name, and Network Information - used to diagnose communication issues. From the computer you are communicating with use the ping command to the computer name and then the IP address to ensure network configuration is available and configured for DNS name resolution. Processor Information - used to diagnose any potential compatibility problems with an unsupported processor. Physical Memory - used to diagnose if the available RAM is enough to run OnGuard and its database. Hard drive size - used to diagnose errors caused by lack of hard drive space. This information is mostly concerned with computers hosting a database as sufficient space for expansion is required. How to View the Computer Information 1. On the main window of the System Management Console, click Computer Information. 2. A summary of your computer s configuration is displayed. 3. To update the information, click [Refresh]. Refreshing the System Management Console is mainly used to track changes in Physical Memory. OnGuard Information The specifics of your OnGuard installation are found in this section of the System Management Console. Technical support may ask for information located here. The following information is displayed when viewing the summary of your OnGuard installation: Version - the OnGuard version information will assist Lenel Technical Support Group in troubleshooting issues that may be specific to the version you are using. In any single OnGuard installation all Application Servers, Database Servers, and Clients must have the same OnGuard Version and hot fixes installed Hot Fixes Installed - the OnGuard hot fix information will assist Lenel Technical Support Group in troubleshooting issues that may be specific to the version you are using. In any single OnGuard installation all Application Servers, Database Servers, and Clients must have the same OnGuard Version and hot fixes installed Install Path - the path that OnGuard is installed can determine where OnGuard files are located. Knowledge of where OnGuard is installed helps in finding OnGuard system files. How to View the OnGuard System Information 1. On the main window of the System Management Console, click OnGuard Information. 2. A summary of your OnGuard configuration is displayed. OnGuard Services A list of OnGuard services, and their status, are displayed in this section of the System Management Console. These services can be stopped or started from within the System Management Console. How to View the OnGuard Services 1. On the main window of the System Management Console, click OnGuard Services. 2. OnGuard Log Files How to Start and Stop the OnGuard Services 1. While viewing the OnGuard Services in the System Management Console, locate the status of the service you would like to start or stop. The status is located directly to the right of the service name and is either noted as being Started or Stopped. 2. Click the Start, Restart, or Stop link located directly below the status to change the state of the service. OnGuard Log Files OnGuard log files are displayed in this section of the System Management Console and allow easy access to your computer s entire series of OnGuard log files. These log files can be used to troubleshoot errors that occur while operating OnGuard applications and which are then listed in the log files. How to View the OnGuard Log Files 1. On the main window of the System Management Console, click OnGuard Log Files. 2. A list of OnGuard logs are displayed. 3. Click the View link to view the log file in a text editor. Export System Information You are able to export your system information to a single file. You would do this in conjunction with Technical Support, which could then take that file and view your system information for troubleshooting purposes. How to Export the System Information 1. In the title menu, click Export. 2. In the dialog box that appears, enter a name for the file and select the export location. 3. Click [Save]. A file with an.lsmc extension is saved at the location you specified. System Management Console User Guide 9
