1. Provide information about scholarships, internships and graduate schools opportunities for Latin students or minority groups. -Goal achieved. There is always a section in the meeting were it is shown to students the opportunities for scholarships, internships and graduates schools with their requisites and deadlines. In addition, every time we had an opportunity of scholarship that applies to a specific member we let him know personally and help them during the process of application. We also have a Facebook Page that we use to connect with our members through this social network. We post in Facebook any opportunities, awards, and other news we have for our Chapter: Also our chapter participated in the SACNAS National Conference 2010 and shared the knowledge with the colleagues that didn't participate. During this year, our chapter is making a strong campaign to motivate the student to participate in the National Conference 2011 and take advantage of this unique opportunity. 2. Recruitment and Outreach: Centenary of UPRM: A) Some of the SACNAS UPRM Members at the Parade Colegio Somos Todos Celebrating the 100 th Year Anniversary of UPRM. However, this data should serve to inform you about the types of students, level, majors, and expected levels of study that the SACNAS UPRM Chapter is attracting and recruiting. It may also serve as a tool to represent the success of our recruitment this past year. 3. Leadership training -Social activities: Students here are in charge of making activities to share with the other student s associations of our campus and from other universities. This year we hosted two activities with the ASBMB Organization: an Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Speaker Series. This helps encourage cooperation among chapter members and among other organizations. Every committee has to give a report of the work done by them to our advisor, Dr. Carlos Rios Velazquez. In addition of these committees and the workshops, we also encourage student to attend the annual Summer Leadership Institute offered by SACNAS and to other programs in the US too. 4. Personal and Professional Development Activities: Initiation of new members (April 29, 2011) -There were 21 new members initiated. Some professors and representatives from other student associations attended too. In this activity we had the honor to receive Dr. Kermin J. Martinez, a representative from the SACNAS national committee.
Undergraduate Research Symposium (March 29, 2011) -In this symposium four undergraduate students from the Biology Department presented their research in order for other students to know about the opportunities to do research in our campus. The student presenters were: Miss. Selimar Ledesma (Biochemistry- Protein- Protein interactions using Phage Display ), Miss. Lorena Ríos (Plant Biotechnology), Miss. Christie Rodríguez (Nanotechnology) and Mr. José M. Cruz (Functional Metagenomics). Speaker Series: Cancer: From the theory to the battle field (March 5,2011) -Speaker: Dr. Carlos Acevedo Dr. Carlos Acevedo (immunologist) gave a presentation about what is cancer, how to prevent it and the treatments. The audience was science students and the conference was given from a cellular and molecular perspective. University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez 100 th Anniversary Celebration: Colegio Somos Todos (May 5-7, 2011) -Our campus is celebrating the centenary! The UPRM prepared a march to celebrate with the community this important occasion. In the activity there were sections were some associations including our chapter had the opportunity to let the community know about our work. SACNAS had the opportunity to inform the community about our projects on the campus and about the SACNAS mission. Relevo por la vida (Relay for Life) (May 14 & 15, 2011) - This activity was a 24 hours relay to represent the fight against cancer. In this activity included cultural activities and sales to raise money for cancer patients. During this night there was a ceremony to commemorate cancer s survivors.
