Connect to the Sun Connection Technology for Photovoltaic Modules Maximum output, minimum space. Photovoltaic junction boxes play an important role in solar-energy production systems. They house electrical connections between modules, and protect the cells against damage. The most critical component of PV junction boxes is the connection technology that guarantees secure contact between the strings and PV connection lines. Connection technology is largely responsible for both system efficiency and an extended life span. Not surprisingly, PV systems are prone to dramatic temperature and humidity fluctuations triggered by harsh outdoor environments. In spite of this, PV systems are expected to have an extended service life. Engineered from the onset to withstand these challenges and more, WAGO terminal blocks have successfully served the most demanding applications through: Extremely compact and modular design Wide temperature range from - 60 C to +105 C (for a short time also up to 200 C) Compact and modular construction Transition from USE-2 type conductors to THHN/THWN-2 Custom-engineered solutions Photo provided courtesy of Spelsberg 7

Connect with Function DC Isolation, Integrated Diode, Distribution DC isolators, combiner boxes, and distribution boxes perform critical functions between the PV modules and the inverters: Isolation of equipment Collection of PV strings Reliable connection between modules and inverters. The versatile WAGO rail-mounted terminal block system offers many possibilities for connecting the PV lines reliably and permanently. Intelligent jumper systems simplify the interconnection of the PV strings. Disconnect and fuse terminal blocks with high voltage resistance securely isolate PV generators from inverters. Custom-engineered solutions, such as diode modules (up to 1000 V DC), complete the system. Solarmodule modules DC-Trennschalter isolator Wechselrichter Power inverter WAGO, when reliability matters! Temperature fluctuation, vibration and corrosion mean screw connections must be checked and adjusted frequently. This is where CAGE CLAMP excels. In addition to minimizing wiring and installation time, all terminations are permanently gas-tight, maintenance-free and resistant to vibration and thermal cycling. The rail-mounted terminal block system. Simply brilliant. With just one rail-mounted terminal block system, WAGO fulfills virtually all industrial, Ex application and building installation needs. Thanks to CAGE CLAMP S technology, TOPJOB S railmounted terminal blocks are the industry s most compact. This means more wiring space, as well as smaller control cabinets and junction boxes. Freely programmable with any of the 5 IEC 61131-3 languages Support all major fieldbus protocols Cost effective visualization with built-in HMI software WAGO is ready to shine a light on solar efficiency with several solutions geared for increasing solar application performance. WAGO s photovoltaic solar tracking function block calculates the relative position of the sun using geographic location, time zone, daylight savings status, current time, date and year. The algorithm uses celestial based events to output the sun s elevation and azimuth and is accurate to ±1. This basic function block can be used with WAGO s Programmable Fieldbus Controllers or Industrial PCs. Concentrated solar applications require a very high degree of accuracy to calculate the position of the sun. WAGO Solar Position function block calculates the elevation and azimuth of the sun to within ± 0.05 Degrees. WAGO s SOLAR ANGLES function block tracks the sun s position and controls the azimuth and/or elevation for photovoltaic solar arrays. WAGO s SOLAR POSITION function block tracks the sun s position and controls the azimuth and/or elevation of mirrors used in concentrated solar applications (Within 0.05 of NREL s calculations). 713

How Bright is the Sun Light? Monitoring Photovoltaic Systems Continuous current measurement. Performance of photovoltaic systems not only depends on sunlight, but also on the error-free operation of the solar arrays. WAGO s line of current sensors provides continuous current monitoring to help system operators identify potential problems from a defective solar panel. Two sensors are available, the 789-620 measures DC currents up to 80 amps, and the 789-621 measures up to 140 amps DC. These sensors feature 0.5% full-scale accuracy using a contact-less current sensor. The current measurements values are available via MODBUS standard protocol to higher level control systems such as the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM, WAGO s Industrial PCs or PERSPECTO Control Panels. MODBUS Addressing is performed via onboard DIP switches. Up to 32 sensors can be sequentially connected per RS-485 segment and be expanded to a maximum bus cable length of 4,000 feet. Both current sensors can operate in environments from -20 C to +70 C. These features provide cost-effective and easy-to-install monitoring solutions for photovoltaic systems. MODBUS IPCs monitor world s largest solar powered boat. WAGO IPCs control charging for three batteries and ten Drivetek Maximum Power Pick Trackers (MPPT) via 13 CAN buscouplers on the world s largest solar powered boat. The WAGO IPCs monitor the PV panels solar absorption which is vital for the fixed, deck-mounted PV panels and ensures safety for the fourmember crew as Tûranor has no gasoline backups for steering or propulsion. Always Informed Communication / TO-PASS /GPRS Easy system monitoring. In solar systems, many values must be monitored in order to guarantee perfect operation of the panels. When problems arise, fault messages, alarms and notifications must be transmitted quickly and securely. The cost-effective solution: TO-PASS the right device for every application. TO-PASS transmits measurement values via GSM network and offers the ability to store measurement values on any Web server. Thus, you can access process data from nearly anywhere in the world. Communication with power plants. Power utilities are increasingly requiring direct connection of PV plants to their control systems. These control systems generally communicate via standard transmission protocols per IEC 60870 or IEC 61850. WAGO provides the appropriate software solutions for both protocols. Simply put: Energy suppliers can optimize the power output of PV and concentrated solar plans via centralized telecontrol signals. The WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM can receive the telecontrol signals and control appropriate components. The measured line currents can also be used for evaluation. 1000 V DC Solutions for Solar Systems Rail-Mounted Terminal Blocks and Midget Style Fuse Holder for up 1,000 V requirements: Line collector boxes require rail-mounted terminal blocks rated at 1,000 V DC. Due to the clearance and creepage distances, WAGO s TOPJOB S railmounted terminal blocks are rated at 800 V per IEC (allowing operation in pollution degree 3 environments) and 600 V per UL. The clearance and creepage distances refer to: 1. Potential to potential 1 2. Potential to carrier rail 2 6 5 1,000 V per UL: By using a multi-level block with the bottom level removed and covered 5, it is possible to meet the UL spacing requirements for potential to carrier rail. The oversized end plates must be used in between terminal blocks of differing potentials 6, to meet the spacing requirements from potential to potential. With equal potentials, the multi-level terminal blocks with the bottom level removed and covered 5, can be used without the oversized end plate. 18

to 1000 V 1,000 V per EN: By commoning individual terminal blocks, it is possible to achieve a common potential 3. This eliminates potential-to-potential clearances and creepage distances. The remaining clearances and creepage distances from potential to carrier rail are sufficient for 1,000 V EN applications. Blocks with differing potentials (+, -) mounted adjacent to each other on the rail must be separated by an end stop that is at least 6 mm wide 4. 4 Midget Fuse Holder rated for 1,000 V DC: The new 811 Series Midget Style Fuse Holder with CAGE CLAMP and lever actuation provides a maintenance free, vibration-proof connection for 1000 V DC fusing in combiner box applications. 19
