5 PROJECT INTRODUCTION The Reed College Performing Arts Building consolidates theatre, dance and music programs into a vibrant and inter-disciplinary environment for the arts. The new 78,000 sf building serves as the front door to campus and encloses the Commons Quad, connecting the performing arts to the academic core of campus. The facility is organized around a central atrium, an informal learning space that provides an address for each program and four performance venues: a 200- seat studio theatre with flexible seating configurations; a highly experimental 100-seat black box theatre, a 100-seat music choral rehearsal hall, and 100- seat Performance Lab for theatre and dance. In addition, the building includes a high volume dance rehearsal room, media technology resource center, shared classrooms and design studios. The building is an Earth Advantage Gold Certified project which includes an occupiable ecoroof terrace, abundant natural light, automated natural ventilation, radiant heated floors and red oak salvaged from fallen campus trees. REED COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT Reed College is committed to responsible stewardship of its campus environment and is aware that our actions and decisions impact our city, our region, and our planet. As an institution of higher learning, Reed is dedicated to investigating, understanding, and promoting awareness of its present and future impact on the natural world. Through broad community involvement and education, Reed strives to incorporate ideals of sustainability into the operations of the College and the daily lives of individuals on campus. Sustainability is commonly accepted to mean meeting the resource needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. All Reed efforts in support of sustainability will strive to maintain and develop the College in a responsible manner and to minimize the College s impact on the environment.

7 ECOROOF TERRACE Located above the Performing Arts Building s west entry canopy and off of the third floor of the central atrium, the ecoroof showcase s Reed College s commitment to sustainability. The ecoroof provides students, faculty and visitors with an occupiable outdoor terrace with views west across the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Eastmoreland Golf Course and to the west hills beyond while masking views of the campus s west parking lot below. The green roof dampens sound, reduces runoff, and improves thermal resistance for the new Performing Arts Building. The irrigation system uses non-potable water from on campus Reed Lake fed by Crystal Springs Creek. The College s biology department as well as local nursery owners worked closely with the green roof manufacturer and Landscape Architect to select all native plant varieties that are best suited for the roof s orientation and local climate. The College s Biology Department was also involved in the selection of some rather unique plant species, to include less commonly used ecoroof plant species, the Lewisia and Opuntia, as the roof also serves as an laboratory for the College to test plant varieties, soil, and monitor other environmental factors throughout the plants life cycle. MAINTENANCE AND MONITORING Reed College s grounds crew is responsible for maintenance of the ecoroof terrace. The college s grounds manager worked closely with the design team and is trained on how to care for the planting material and irrigation system. The Biology department and students also have an active role in maintaining and monitoring the plants as part of their studies. The department will be metering carbon dioxide levels to evaluate performance of plants throughout their life cycle.

13 views of the ecoroof terrace looking west RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUCCESS: The design and construction coordination for the ecoroof was seamless in that the entire roofing system was an off the shelf by American Hydrotech and constructed by manufacturer qualified installers. The design team worked with both Hydrotech and local Joy Creek Nursery to specify indigenous plants species and the sizes that would be locally available based on project schedule and scale. When it came time for planting, the Landscape Architect worked alongside construction crew to ensure plants were properly planted and to customize the planting layout, blending plant types and colors to create a design combining function and beauty with the surrounding landscape on campus and beyond. The Landscape Architect made multiple site visits to ensure the plants were properly irrigated and cared for in order to maximize success.
