Successes impacting on national and international levels. Magdalena Andersson, Västerbotten County Governor Chair of ProcessIT Innovations 10 strong years ProcessIT Innovations achieves great success in the meeting between new technologies and traditional enterprises. We can now demonstrate this as we summarise ten years of ProcessIT Innovations. Ten years ago ProcessIT Innovations was chosen as one of the state-owned VINNOVA S VINNVÄXT winners. This has resulted in a major investment in the regional innovation system in northern Sweden and contributed towards the successes in the meeting between new technologies and traditional enterprises. Successes that have also impacted on national and international levels. It is therefore with great pleasure that in 2014 we received the news that VINNOVA had chosen to finance ProcessIT Innovations for another four years. It is a testament to all those who have participated in the enterprise. Along with the contribution of other stakeholders, VINNOVA s continued funding means that ProcessIT Innovations can invest almost SEK 50 million over the next few years to develop the process industry, its suppliers and researchers in the pro- cess industrial IT and automation sector in northern Sweden. In 2014, we also became aware of the first announcements in the National Innovation Programme Process Industrial IT and Automation. ProcessIT Innovations has been highly involved in the formation of this innovation programme, and will also be a part of these activities in the future. The programme is extremely important. With nearly a quarter of a billion Swedish Kronor to be distributed over the next four years this will also be an important injection for the parties involved in ProcessIT Innovations network. The raw materials and products supplied by the north of Sweden are of great significance for the whole country. We have energy, forests and ore, and we have amassed a great deal of expertise in these areas, both in academia and in industry. An achievement we should be both happy and proud of. However, to lead the development in the future requires increased expertise. This is one of the most important issues for our major industries and the technology companies they collaborate with. It is therefore also an important issue for ProcessIT Innovations that we wish to focus on, not least by encouraging more young people to apply for engineering and technology courses. This technology-intensive work also demands a strong gender equality perspective. These are issues that I wish to be a part of and to run, both as chair of ProcessIT Innovations and as county governor of Västerbotten. There are so many studies that show the competitiveness of industries and businesses that deal with gender equality improves. However, this is an on-going undertaking and we must be resolute in sticking to it. Magdalena Andersson, Västerbottens läns landshövding, ordförande i ProcessIT Innovations ProcessIT Innovations Annual Report 2014 3

ProcessIT towards 2020 The ten-year VINNVÄXT programme for ProcessIT Innovations ended in 2014 with an international assessment, which gave the activity top marks. VINNOVA now intends to invest additional funds in a continuation, in total SEK 50 million over the coming years. ProcessIT Innovations will receive continued funding from VINNOVA of SEK 18 million over four years. This means, along with other co-financing, close to SEK 50 million in core funding, which through ProcessIT Innovations can be invested in the development of the process industry, its suppliers and researchers in the area Process Industrial IT and Automation in northern Sweden. It was gratifying decision that came in the autumn of 2014, ten years after ProcessIT Innovation was chosen as one of the Government agency VINNOVA s VINNVÄXT winners. The continued confidence signifies a strong investment in the regional innovation and growth systems in the area of Process Industrial IT and Automation. A variety of completely new networks and collaborations between process industries, supplier companies and researchers in northern Sweden have already been established with tangible results in terms of new products, services and companies. When Per Levén, CSO and John Lindström, CEO look forward towards 2020, they see a Process- IT Innovations that will grow even stronger as a project broker, with networks where new parties can always join. We will continue to be a strong vanguard in bringing together partners in key projects. As a project house, we ensure that all parties come closer together, says Per Leven. We are promoting cooperation between different research groups and their networks with industries and businesses, says John Lindström. Per Levén and John Lindström emphasise that at the current time industry is in the midst of a transformative industrialisation process with increased automation and greater complexity. A development that requires a continued increase in skills, not least within IT and automation 4 ProcessIT Innovations Annual Report 2014

We will continue to be a strong vanguard bringing together partners. Per Leven, CSO, ProcessIT Innovations issues. Here ProcessIT Innovations is always prepared to be a strong link between university researchers and suppliers and industrial companies that are dependent on new areas of expertise. We are fully committed to what industry sees as its principal focus for the coming years, says Per Leven. We will be a stakeholder that contributes to industrial companies strengthening their research, development and innovation in industrial IT and automation. Increased collaboration Collaboration is a key issue and an important core competency for ProcessIT Innovations, not least to tackle increased global competition. We will see more advanced business models where an ever increasing number of companies not only sell products and services, but entire systems and functions. This involves greater integration across the value chain, explains John Lindström. Per Levén, CSO, ProcessIT Innovations. Internationally Increasing internationalisation is another part of the development that the two executives see in the coming years. Per Levén and John Lindstrom believe that there are already many good examples. In recent years a number of technology companies in the region have moved into strong market positions, not only nationally but also internationally. We will be able to help more companies to move towards internationalisation via various EU projects, adds John Lindstrom. We see that we have a number of small and medium-sized businesses with strong positions in a number of technology areas. We will keep close links to companies that have gained a foothold on the international market with their technology, says Per Leven. With the renewed confidence from VINNOVA and with a continuously growing number of companies and organisations in the enterprise, the future looks bright for ProcessIT Innovations. We will help more companies to move towards internationalisation. Digitalisation and collaboration Digitalisation and collaboration will be key issues for ProcessIT Innovations during the years up to 2020. Digitalisation runs deep in the process industries plants and processes - from physical raw material flows to the strategic business decisions. What we are seeing is the beginning of a trend towards a third industrial revolution and a third wave of automation. Vast amounts of data will generate new types of insights through advanced analytical methods. At the same time digitalisation will extend, more clearly than today, beyond the traditional factory and involve many stakeholders. This restructuring is the focus of ProcessIT Innovations. The new-generation s solutions will need knowledge from more stakeholders and areas, which will place greater demands on collaboration. This implies a greater need for collaboration platforms such as ProcessIT Innovations. Collaboration The new-generation s solutions will need knowledge from more stakeholders and areas, which will place greater demands on collaboration. This implies a greater need for collaboration platforms such as ProcessIT Innovations. PiiA and Arrowhead In the coming years several very tangible collaboration projects will be fundamental for ProcessIT Innovations. This includes the national strategic innovation area Process Industrial IT and Automation, PiiA, and the extensive European initiative Arrowhead, Europe s largest research project in the development of automation for manufacturing, energy and process industries. ProcessIT Innovations has actively contributed to both of these initiatives in order for them to be realized. For this reason, I m on the board of ProcessIT Innovations Magdalena Andersson County Governor County of Västerbotten I m on the board of ProcessIT Innovations to contribute towards and strengthen the raw material oriented industry, both here in the region and in the rest of Sweden. My vision is for ProcessIT to be instrumental in the creation of new products and services, to provide competitive improvements, relevant research programmes, new business opportunities and also, most importantly, provide welcome growth. Staffan Sandström Technical Director Boliden Mineral Through ProcessIT we have an opportunity to run projects with other companies and suppliers in a technical field outside of our core competency. ProcessIT has both a broad and deep understanding of the raw material oriented industry s automation needs and the expertise to formulate, organise, coordinate and manage projects within the technical field of automation. Kent Tano Principal R&D Expert LKAB LKAB has a business strategy based on technological leadership. LKAB has for some time chosen a path that starts from a strong, and in the future extended, collaboration with external centres of excellence on national and international levels, including ProcessIT Innovations. Collaboration with ProcessIT Innovations gives synergies and accelerates research and development work. It is also a success factor for the recruitment of skilled researchers. A strong collaboration has been established in LKAB s research-oriented activities with, among others, Luleå University of Technology as well as leading international institutions and stakeholders over a long period. Our raw material oriented industry is extremely important for the whole future of Sweden, and the environment, the collaboration climate and the belief in the future, which up here in the north of Sweden is unique. Tomas Lagerberg Head of Automation Research ABB Corporate Research As a representative of the country s largest supplier of automation and power equipment, I believe ProcessIT Innovations provides a unique opportunity to interact, discuss and interact with many of our key customers. Our raw material oriented industry is extremely important for the whole future of Sweden, and the environment, the collaboration climate and the belief in the future, which up here in the north of Sweden is unique. It feels very good to be a part of this. Anders Kyösti Technical Director SCA Munksund ProcessIT plays an important role for the raw material-oriented industry in channelling resources from universities and sub-suppliers, towards key development areas for us, for example, process automation. For my part, it is very important that the members of ProcessIT s board can agree on a common goal to attain an industrial application and development in our region. ProcessIT Innovations Annual Report 2014 9

Participants in SCOPE visiting SCA Obbola, June 2014. SCOPE-project within the pulp and paper industry At ProcessIT Innovations SCOPE, the industry programme for pulp and paper, captures current issues within the area. Four projects supported by SCOPE during 2014 are presented below. Non-invasive pile scanning Many industries have a need to easily, robustly and objectively measure the volume of the large piles of wood chips, slag, stone, logs or the like. However, the solutions developed have various weaknesses. Within the framework of the project, Adopticum has examined three different techniques - stereo cameras, laser line scanner and scanned total station. The study also examined how the packing density in chip stacks affects the measurement result. Partners in addition to ProcessIT: Adopticum, Boliden Mineral, Norra Skogsägarna, Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner, Umeå University. Fibre direction The project aimed to develop new non-invasive fully optical measurement techniques to determine the fibre direction and fibre direction distribution in paper. A conceptual design has been produced that shows it is possible to determine the direction of the fibre and the fibre direction distribution through a fully optical method. Partners in addition to ProcessIT: The Kempe Foundations, Luleå University of Technology. Industrial router The project has investigated whether it is possible to find an easier and less expensive way to establish measurement points in the process industry where these are not available in sufficient scope. Today, it is expensive to install new measurement points as you have to lay optic fibre and make holes in pipes. The aim has been to build a flexible industrial router, which, together with equipment already available on the market, can be used to wirelessly make surface measurements of temperature and flow. An industrial router built to operate in rugged industrial environments has been installed at SCA Munksund to collect values from a total of six wireless sensors. The router could continuously report the status during the entire test period, even though there is very poor mobile coverage inside the mill. Partners in addition to ProcessIT: SCA Munksund, Elektroniksystem, Umeå University. Drying and fractionation of biosludge Sludge from bio-treatment plants in pulp and paper mills is a growing problem due to new regulations that prohibit the disposal of organic waste. New sludge drying methods are therefore needed so that the sludge becomes a resource instead of a problem. The project has investigated how convective drying of mixed and pure bio-sludge using Tornado technology meets these requirements. The project makes up an important base for continued work in how to take care of the large amounts of bio-sludge produced in municipal wastewater treatment plants, biotreatment plants in the pulp and paper mills and similar facilities in an economically and environmentally sound way. Partners in addition to ProcessIT: Airgrinder, Metsä Board Husum, Processum, SCA Obbola, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. 10 ProcessIT Innovations Annual Report 2014

notiser GRAM projects for the mining industry GRAM is ProcessIT Innovations branch programme for the mining industry. Several of the projects run in the programme are a part in realizing the venture SMIFU, Sustainable Mine and Innovation for the Future. The vision is to stimulate the development of the mining industry of tomorrow including safer mines and sustainable and environmentally friendly mining. WROOMM Wireless and remote operation of mobile machines The purpose of the WROOMM project, Wireless and remote operation of mobile machines, is to develop conceptual solutions for remote loading with large wheel loaders in underground mines, as well as remote monitoring of these machines. Ore can then be mined faster and more efficiently as loading can be started directly after blasting, before the drifts are ventilated when the personnel cannot work underground. This technology would mean increased competitiveness for relevant industrial partners. The mining company Boliden can improve capacity during excavation, loading and transportation of the ore up from their underground mines. In terms of the enterprise s turnover, many of the projects gain a project start towards the end of 2014 or at beginning of 2015, which is why they have not yet had time to have an impact on the enterprise s turnover. 2014 was also a year with few opportunities to apply for project funding from EU structural funds, which further impacted on 2014 s turnover. This remained at approximately SEK 41 million, compared with approximately SEK 45 million for 2013. Income from business partners of approximately SEK 600 thousand has been balanced for use during the next year. The strategic innovation Process Industrial IT and Automation (PiiA) will continue to be important to ProcessIT Innovations and our regional innovation platform, and it is pleasing to see that several pilot studies and projects that are underway have been partially funded by PiiA. Internationally 2014 has mainly been characterised by recertification of the quality stamp Centre of Innovation Excellence, CoIE, for ProcessIT. EU, and the automation project Arrowhead, which has a large imprint on all of our activities and on many of our partners. That in 2014 we have succeeded so well, both nationally and internationally, we see as an acknowledgement that our working methods and strategies have continued to be successful at all levels, which we hope will contribute to additional strength, competitiveness and growth of our partners.
