The Oracle Plug-In works in conjunction with the Agent for Solaris x86. Only x86 processors are supported with this release. There is an alternate Oracle Plug-In release for SPARC processors. The Oracle Plug-In must be the same version as the Agent version. The Oracle x86 Plug-In 6.73 is supported on Solaris x86 Agent 6.73. 1.1 Release History and Changes for version 6.73 August 15th, 2011 - First release for version 6.73.3197 2 FEATURES * The Oracle Plug-In has been designed to allow a user to perform a database backup of an Oracle database on Solaris 10 x86.
* The Plug-In installs on top of the Agent, on the database host, to perform the backups. * The database to be backed up must run on a single host. The Agent and the Oracle Plug-In must be together on the same system running Oracle. * The Oracle Plug-In provides ARCHIVELOG-based, non-rman. backups of whole online database instances. All non-temporary tablespaces and instance parameter files are automatically backed up. * Full and partial databases are restored through normal user-managed Oracle recovery mechanisms. * Database passwords are encrypted for enhanced security over script-based methods. Limitations: Only local, single-instance, disk-based databases are backed up. - Database clusters are not backed up. - Raw devices are not backed up. - Remote databases are not backed up. * The database must run in ARCHIVELOG mode, and the user under which the backup is configured must have SYSDBA privileges 3 FIXES This is a new release. 4 KNOWN ISSUES A duplicate error message may appear in the Oracle Backup log for a failed Job - "UTIL-F-8266 Fatal error in processing Job". This is a cosmetic error resulting from a StreamError exception being thrown from more than one location. (19344) The Oracle Plug-In has been tested in several data recovery scenarios. In the case of a full disaster recovery (where the full database instance is being restored), some care must be exercised on recovery of the database as the Oracle Plug-In does not back up any TEMPORARY tablespaces and the control file information kept in the trace file does not include any commands to add a temporary tablespace. 1. The database recovery should be initiated with an explicit PFILE or SPFILE reference: SQL> STARTUP PFILE='path-to-pfile\initSIDNAME.ora' 2. It may be necessary to take the temporary tablespace datafiles offline: SQL> ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 'path-to-datafile' OFFLINE
3. The database should be recovered as normal, but when opening the database after recovery the command should be: SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN NORESETLOGS 4. TEMPORARY tablespaces should be dropped, the datafiles for the temporary tablespaces removed, and the TEMPORARY tablespaces should be recreated (this may include the default TEMP tablespace). At this point in the recovery, the database can be closed normally and restarted with RESETLOGS if that is your organization's policy. Note: These are not recovery steps, but guidelines for recovery. If there is insufficient space for logs generated, the backup will fail generating the message "nothing selected for backup". Archive Logging: DB shutdown may time out with open connections to the DB when attempting to put the DB into archive mode. 5 INSTALLATION NOTES 5.1 Installation Requirements Hardware ******** * CPU - x86 processors are supported * RAM - A minimum of 2 GB Software ******** * Vault version 6.04 or greater * Windows Agent Console version 6.74 or greater or Web Agent Console version 6.72a or greater * Agent 6.73 for Solaris x86 * Solaris 10 (patch 141445-09 or greater) x86 * Oracle Plug-In for Agent 6.73 for Solaris x86 Oracle Versions *************** Oracle 10g R2 (10.2.0.0) Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.0) There is a separate Agent installation kit as well as a separate Oracle Plug-In kit for the Solaris x86 operating system.
