What is Starkit Software Appliance? Starkit helps you to take control of your cloud data (email and documents) from cloud services providers instead of the other way around. Starkit is a self booting software that installs and configures all settings automatically during installation. Why do I need Starkit for email archiving if Google Apps and Office365 do it? Using your email provider s archiving service is the largest mistake newbies do. You pay hefty subscriptions to your current provider such as Google Apps or Office 365 for email archiving that will work only for email hosted with them. If I use Starkit do I still need a cloud storage provider (i.e. Dropbox or Google Drive)? No, using your own Starkit appliance, you will no longer need a cloud storage provider such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Your cloud storage provider is you, using your own server where you will install the Starkit software. Starkit build incloud storage functionality is based on the open source software owncloud. It is very similar to the widely used Dropbox, while keeping the security as well as any fees in your own hands. What is the difference between Starkit and a mail server (i.e. MS Exchange)? MS Exchange server and other mail servers represent just a sub-set of the services and applications included in Starkit. In fact, we choose to do many things in private sing in the shower, make love, confide in family and friends even though they are not wrong or illegal. How are my emails and files safe from the bad guys, government espionage, competitors and disgruntled employees. Your data is not on someone else s computer The data you send and receive is encrypted The data on your Starkit appliance is encrypted Data on your Starkit appliance cannot be deleted Your data (emails, files, calls, chats) is encrypted at rest and in transit when you use Starkit. That means any unauthorized person who wants to access your data will not be able to read it. If you are using email or cloud storage providers like Gmail or Dropbox or a provider in another country, according to the news, the NSA or any other government, pretty much has a direct line to your mailbox and files. Even if they don t have direct access to your data, it is very easy to ask for it from your provider. For example the US government doesn t need a warrant to access your Gmail or Dropbox account, all they need is a National Security Letter and they don t even have to notify you. What happens if my Starkit appliance has a hardware failure? Starkit has a built-in backup system. You should perform regular backups of your system and keep multiple backup copies of your data. You can set your Starkt to do daily automatic backups. Without multiple backup copies of your data, your data do not exist anywhere except on your Starkit appliance disk. If there is hardware failure you need to re-install Starkit on a different machine and do a restore. If it was a hard disk failure you can keep using the same machine and just change the hard disk with a new one.
