What is Starkit Software Appliance? Starkit helps you to take control of your cloud data (email and documents) from cloud services providers instead of the other way around. Starkit is a self booting software that installs and configures all settings automatically during installation. It is packaged in more generally applicable image format (.iso, Live CD) that supports installations to physical machines and multiple types of virtual machines. That means anyone can install Starkit without the need of technical skills. Starkit automatically converts any computer or VM to your private email and cloud storage service. Using Starkit you eliminate the need of any email provider (like Gmail, Outlook or Office365) or any cloud storage provider (like Dropbox). Your email and cloud service provider for your home or business is your Starkit appliance which you own and control. All data on your Starkit appliance is encrypted at rest and in transit and makes it ideal for you or your business if you don t want service providers (i.e. dropbox, google, microsoft) or governments to keep their nose out of your data. Starkit software appliance does all of the following: Email Archiver Searching your entire company email archive using Starkit is just as quick and easy as searching a folder in you email. All emails, including their attachments, can be searched for, found and viewed in their original format without leaving your inbox. Restore any email or user, no matter how long ago was deleted. Starkit can also collect, encrypt and archive any external POP or IMAP email account. Secure Mail Server You can create and manage email accounts at your domain for you and your employees. There is no need for other mail servers or any external email provider. Starkit is your private and secure mail server and is automatically setup during installation. You have access to your email and files from any computer or mobile phone connected to the internet. Encrypted Cloud Storage Dropbox-like cloud storage system based on owncloud open source software. It s robust enough that it can replaced Dropbox or any other online cloud storage service. Suitable for you and your team with built in sharing and collaboration features. No storage limits and you own and control your data saved encrypted on your Starkit appliance. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 3 of 56

Calendaring and collaboration Create and share multiple calendars. You can share and see each other s calendars within your organization, check available times, and go ahead and schedule appointments. Starkit calendar can also fix your no show problem, by sending email and SMS reminders to your clients. Mail Collector Apart from viewing and replying to email accounts created using Starkit, if you use several email accounts with different providers, we offer you a way to manage them all in one place: Starkit s Mail Collector. It allows you to retrieve and send email from all your accounts from Gmail, Outlook.com or Yahoo or any other POP3 or IMAP email account. This allows you to have the privacy and security benefits of the Starkit email system, but still hold onto your well established and known email address. Spam Filtering and AV because when it comes to killing spam, there is nothing as deadly as Starkit. Starkit spam filter implements auto-whitelists, self learning Bayesian, Greylisting, DNSBL, DNSWL, URIBL, SPF, SRS, Backscatter, Virus scanning, attachment blocking, Senderbase and multiple other filter methods. Data Encryption What s the biggest threat to your data? Is it snooping, or device theft, or hacking, or simple carelessness? How about all of the above? Your Starkit software appliance locks down your data, files, emails, documents, photos, and encrypts all data at rest and in transit. Ultra fast webmail Unlike other email services, like Gmail, which adapted a consumer email offering for business and continues to drive more than 95% of their revenue from advertising, Starkit webmail is designed from ground up to maximize user productivity i.e. preview pane, tabbed browsing, folders and subfolders and ultra fast search. Contacts Management Create, share and organize in groups unlimited number of contacts. Save multiple notes and attachments for each contact. Starkit will automatically organize email conversations, and all files and photos exchanged with each contact, in order for you to know everything in relation to the contact with a single click. SMS Campaigns Compose and send SMS campaigns directly from your inbox. Sending an SMS campaign is as easy as sending an email. Compose your message, select recipients from your existing contact groups and hit send, that is it. Password Manager Access Starkit password manager that helps you store and organize passwords for different websites and Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 4 of 56

services. All passwords are encrypted with your own key. Access Starkit password manager directly within your Starkit webmail. Built-in encrypted backup Starkit automatically backs up your entire data (emails, files, photos) and performs daily snapshots of your files to a location other than your internal disk, such as an external hard disk or a disk on your network. If anything ever happens to your internal disk of your machine, you can restore your entire system to another Starkit appliance and get all your information back in no time. Backup data is also encrypted. It is a true Plug n Play solution. No technical skills required to set it up. It is bundled with Web Based interface for anywhere access and can be utilized for encrypted private email communication and secure storage. Starkit requires zero maintenance after installation. You own and control your email and other data on your fully encrypted Starkit Appliance because you don t depend on any provider like Gmail or Dropbox. The provider is YOU. No one can read your data even if your Starkit is seized. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 5 of 56

5 reasons why Starkit is innovative and unique? Stakrkit is innovative because there is no other easy solution available in the world that helps people to get their privacy back from service providers: 1. Starkit is the only easy, single click installation solution to privacy. Anyone can use Starkit to setup his private email and cloud storage service with no technical skills. Today, people feel entrapped to service providers because they can t built their own cloud solutions (especially email), unless they pay millions to build customized systems that only large enterprises can afford. You can install Starkit in just a few minutes using only a bootable CD or USB and any standard computer. 2. Starkit is the only complete solution towards privacy for both email and documents. It will work for email and cloud storage including powerful webmail, team sharing, calendar and contacts management. You keep the benefits of the cloud (you own it) without compromising your privacy. 3. Starkit is the only factory ready solution that protects your data both ways, at rest and in transit. Your data will be safe not only from people who spy on your internet line but even if your hardware falls into the wrong hands. Starkit uses a combination of self-signed certificate and a powerful build-in encryption algorithm to securely encrypts your data, files, emails, documents and photos at rest and in transit. 4. Starkit is maintenance free. The software automatically downloads and updates itself on autopilot. 5. Starkit can be installed on any standard computer with no operating system requirements because it has its own operating system. You can use the self booting Starkit iso file (Live CD or bootable USB) on any hardware and will install the operating system and all components required automatically. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 6 of 56

Can I use Starkit for secure and private communication (email, voice, video, chat)? Absolutely. Starkit will be your privately owned server for secure and encrypted email, voice, videoconferencing and chat. Download and install Starkit on a dedicated computer follow the setup instructions and within minutes you will be able to communicate securely. Using Starkit you can communicate with anyone i.e. people with gmail or outlook email accounts. You should keep in mind that true privacy and security only exist from Starkit to Starkit users. The good news is that you can create a Starkit user on your appliance in seconds i.e. a new employee or an important client that you want to communicate securely. Your email, voice or chat communication does not go through the servers of any provider it is all controlled by your own Starkit appliance. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 7 of 56

Can I use Starkit to access my office files from home? Yes. The Starkit Cloud will sync all your files from any file server or any other computer you have at your office and you can access them using any computer or mobile device from everywhere. You can either have the files sync to other devices or you can use the Starkit web interface. Choice is yours. That means you don t have to travel to the office in order to access a file to work on. You can work at home or on the go and your files in the office will be always updated with the latest changes, no matter where you work from and vice versa. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 8 of 56

Can I use Starkit to archive and backup my email (POP, IMAP, Gmail, Office365, MS Exchange)? Yes. Starkit can collect, encrypt and archive any external POP or IMAP email account. That means you can have Starkit archiving any email account you have either from your own mail server or from any cloud service provider like Gmail, Yahoo, Office365 or any other. Starkit: - Archives every email send and received by any user. - Indexes all emails so that you can perform ultra fast searches to all your company email and attachments, no matter how big database you have. Searching millions of emails takes just a few milliseconds. - No email can be deleted, even if a user deletes it from their computer, mobile phone or mail server. - All email data on your Starkit appliance is encrypted at rest and in transit. Don t forget that Starkit can replace completely your email server if you wish too, so the capabilities of using it as your email archive by far exceed any other email archiving solution. Starkit not only will archive your email and make it searchable, it can also be used as your own webmail system with anywhere access. You can manage, reply and share email plus lots of other features that cannot be found anywhere else. See more What are the features of Starkit webmail? Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 9 of 56

Why do I need Starkit for email archiving if Google Apps and Office365 do it? Using your email provider s archiving service is the largest mistake newbies do. You pay hefty subscriptions to your current provider such as Google Apps or Office 365 for email archiving that will work only for email hosted with them. What about your other email accounts not hosted with them? Bad luck they are not supported. What If your provider is down? Your email archive is down. Yes, it sucks But it can get a lot worse than that. I have seen email accounts just completely shut down for no obvious reason. You know what? Your email archive is busted too! You lose all your email data overnight! Can you imagine the stress of knowing that all important information in your email is lost forever and your business is going to come crashing to a halt. Well, let me tell you. Nothing will prepare you for the panic you feel when this happens. What if you are the guy, holding all the cards? What if the email data was stored securely by you, instead of the other way around? Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 10 of 56

If I use Starkit do I still need an email provider (i.e. Gmail) or my own mail server (Microsoft Exchange)? No, if you use Starkit you don t need an email provider (i.e. gmail or outlook or yahoo) or your own mail server (i.e. Microsoft Exchange). Your Starkit appliance will be your mail server, that means the provider of your email service is you. Of course you can keep and collect your existing email addresses to your own Starkit appliance using the mail collector feature. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 11 of 56

If I use Starkit do I still need a cloud storage provider (i.e. Dropbox or Google Drive)? No, using your own Starkit appliance, you will no longer need a cloud storage provider such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Your cloud storage provider is you, using your own server where you will install the Starkit software. Starkit build incloud storage functionality is based on the open source software owncloud. It is very similar to the widely used Dropbox, while keeping the security as well as any fees in your own hands. The primary difference is that that when you download and install Starkit on your hardware, you can operate it without charge on your private Starkit appliance, with no limits on storage space (except for hard disk capacity) or the number of connected clients. You will still have the benefits of Dropbox like service, plus more. Here is a list of notable features: File storage in conventional directory structures or via WebDAV. Encryption of user files. Synchronization of clients running Windows (Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8), Mac OS X (10.6 or better), or Linux. Music streaming (through Ampache) User and group administration (via OpenID or LDAP) Sharing of content across groups or public URLs. Online text editor with syntax highlighting and code folding Bookmarking URL shortening Suite Photo gallery. Video viewer. PDF viewer (using PDF.js) Viewer for ODF Files (.odt,.odp,.ods) Mozilla Sync hosting If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, all history, form data, bookmarks etc. can be stored in your owncloud server. Customizable with one-click-install apps. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 12 of 56

What is the difference between Starkit and a mail server (i.e. MS Exchange)? MS Exchange server and other mail servers represent just a sub-set of the services and applications included in Starkit. You can find here more details how Starkit compares with Microsoft Exchange. 1. MS Exchange is not complete solution, apart from the mail server software, you need to buy separate software or appliances like: windows operating system, separate anti-spam and anti-virus, mail client software (MS office), email archiving. This will sky rocket your cost. 2. Set up a mail server requires extensive technical skills to do it properly and securely. Need to pay for labour and also need to have a specialized trained admin to maintain your system 3. MS Exchange will still be missing components such as cloud storage, advance contact management, sharing and collboration features, disk encryption, built-in backup, high performance webmail and ultra fast company wide search and email archiving. Summarizing, Starkit includes more components, is more secure and is a zero maintenance solution than MS Exchange or any other mail server. Starkit comes at low cost, does not extra software to work properly and is easy for anyone without technical skills to set it up. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 13 of 56

What is the difference of Starkit from mail security appliances (i.e. Fortinet, Sophos or Baracuda)? An accurate comparison of mail or network security appliances with Starkit is not possible, because we compare a complete Solution (Starkit) with complimentary products. Hardware or sfotware appliances such as Fortinet, Barracuda or Sophos do specific jobs i.e protecting your network from spam and viruses, some other appliances can be used for email archiving i.e. Barracuda. Every one of those appliances does only a specific job and none of those appliances can be used as a complete solution for mail and cloud storage. None of this appliances can replace your mail server or mail provider or cloud storage provider, only Starkit can. Starkit makes it easy to have one appliance that does it all, takes only few minutes to set it up and requires zero maintenance. Every available security email appliance in the market does just a subset of the jobs done by Starkit. In order to achieve all of the Starkit functions, you need to have multiple appliances, each one doing different job and then connect them to work together i.e. mail server, spam filtering and antivirus software, cloud storage system, archiving solution, backyp solution, encryption solution, password management and unified user s management. It is a huge headache to do it all right and requires many hours, extensive technical skills, high maintenance and high cost. Only Starkit makes it easy and keeps the cost at a fraction of what you would spend buying and connecting all these appliances together. Starkit is more than the total of the following: Starkit = email security appliance (i.e. Fortinet or Sophos or Barracuda) + Custom build Mail Server (i.e. MS Exchange) + Ultra fast webmail with advanced business features (nothing comparable exist in the market yet) + Calendaring + Contacts Management + Email Archiving (i.e. Barracuda Archiver) + Custom Build Cloud Storage Server (i.e. owncloud) + SMS service + Encryption Solution + Unified user management plus the convenience of a single plug-n-play solution i.e. When Starkit installs you can send and receive emails from the very first minute without adding your domain name, just using the domain you create when you set up your Starkit i.e. you@example.starkit.me. It works like magic! You can of course add your own domains later. Email and network security appliances are complimentary products to your existing email or file server solution. You must first have an email and cloud storage solution and then you can use email and network security appliances to strengthen the security of your solution. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 14 of 56

An analogy is like a buying a protection case for your mobile phone. You can t compare a cell phone case manufacturer with a mobile phone manufacturer. An email security appliance (i.e. sophos or fortinet) is an accessory of your total privacy solution but is not the actual solution. The analysis above explains why Starkit is the only complete solution for email and cloud storage privacy. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 15 of 56

What is the difference of Starkit from a Network Attached Storage (NAS. i.e. Qnap, Western Digital)? There are two major differences of Starkit from Network Attached Storage devices: The first main difference is that Starkit is a software appliance, unlike NAS appliance (Qnap or Synology) that they their hardware devices. NAS devices (like qnap or western digital NAS) are simply hardware, specifically designed for the sole purpose of storing files, so they are usually run on under powered hardware with limited memory and CPU. Starkit offers the capability of storing and sharing your files both on a local network and through the Internet just like Dropbox or modern NAS servers do, with the additional benefit of having Starkit run on your own hardware that can range anything from a Virtual machine to a high performance computer. So, you have virtually no limit on storage (except for hard disk capacity). The choice is yours. The second main difference is that Starkit can do more than cloud storage. Starkit can be your mail server, webmail solution, communication server (voice, videoconferencing and chat), calendaring and contacts management solution. No NAS or other solution in the world offers such functionality as Starkit does with a single installation. Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 16 of 56

Privacy and Security FAQs I have nothing to hide. Is Starkit suitable for me? How does Starkit protect my privacy and keeps my information secure? How are my emails and files safe from the bad guys, government espionage, competitors and disgruntled employees. Can somebody access my data if my Starkit appliance is stolen? What is phishing and how can Starkit protect me from it? Can I use Starkit as my encrypted password manager? Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 17 of 56

I have nothing to hide. Is Starkit suitable for me? The nothing to hide argument mistakenly suggests that privacy is something only criminals desire. In fact, we choose to do many things in private sing in the shower, make love, confide in family and friends even though they are not wrong or illegal. Who would not be embarrassed if all of their most intimate details were exposed? Fences and curtains are ways to ensure a measure of privacy, not indicators of criminal behavior. Privacy is a fundamental part of a dignified life. Even if you think you have nothing to hide, you may indeed have something to fear. You might fear for yourself. As Kafka so chillingly illustrates in The Trial, the prospect of unwarranted government pursuit is terrifying. Or you might fear for our society. Living under the constant gaze of government surveillance can produce long-lasting social harm: if citizens are just a little more fearful, a little less likely to freely associate, a little less likely to dissent the aggregate chilling effect can close what was once an open society. IF EVERYONE S EVERY ACTION WERE BEING MONITORED, AND EVERYONE TECHNICALLY VIOLATES SOME OBSCURE LAW AT SOME TIME, THEN PUNISHMENT BECOMES PURELY SELECTIVE. Perhaps you remain unconvinced. You are sure that you have nothing to hide and you never will. You think our concerns about chilled speech and democratic accountability are overblown, and you think privacy concerns are exaggerated and unlikely to affect you or our society in any case. But and this is the biggest hole in the nothing to hide, nothing to fear argument how can you know for sure? In fact, you have no idea if you have something to fear or not, because you do not know what the government, email and cloud service providers do with the data they collect. If the government keeps secret what it is collecting about you or why, you cannot correct potential errors. And if you know anything about our justice system, you know that errors are common. Transparency is partly about making sure the government s actions its outputs can be evaluated; but transparency is also about making sure the government s information its inputs is accurate. THOSE IN POWER WILL ESSENTIALLY HAVE WHAT THEY NEED TO PUNISH ANYONE THEY D LIKE, WHENEVER THEY CHOOSE, AS IF THERE WERE NO RULES AT ALL. ARE YOU THE NEXT VICTIM EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE? Last update: 2015/08/17 12:33:03 Page 18 of 56

How does Starkit protect my privacy and keeps my information secure? Starkit Protects your privacy in three ways: 1. The service provicer is you. You own and control your data. Starkit will perform as your own private and secure server for mail, cloud storage and communication (voice, video, chat). That means your email, file transfers, video/voice calls and chat will not go through any provider s servers unlike to what happens when you use for example Gmail or Dropbox or Skype. The provider is YOU, not Google, Dropbox or Microsoft. 2. Data encryption in transit. All data send and received by Starkit is encrypted. That means all your email, files and communication that travel through internet from one user to the other is encrypted and cannot be read. For example if you write: Hi Maria, how are you? after the encryption it will look like this and this is what will be traveling through the internet lines: nm5mr8p1qccpwiahr7kqwxcgne/mn2uo4omcny148jnc0bpak3ul5mcj8dayoszxf2lhadb3a7ngrnes hhpk3d4nix8luaj8xwaia7vidrregsxtcauhc8sb5xfyhg8xc6sn1ry4ocidf+h7rjbro+co61jj2zoy x0i59969dazmbf/dbwgpxxm699s4jy6wtqy99uqebdvjmifnev55twvocyriuvdnnz9h9jsqo4pfgbnt u0hb75xbjwjul9akwvv/hv09hsak5aktimsnh+bkvbxsl2tansli3ipx4hnovyovspksq14lxpvdm++m zhvxlssuvf0y43wmxzkclu/h+ojxexg5pdydny60bdiulbohemn+uwxbtvgniyorkruoqpmmdlyfbm1r N2n/nVeIOcCB3OEFgOBrGhQSsF6jsVEA6sf4Ut/S+oCHS7guqGzGLDDi27ZlE/h1gDzNgCtuG/FnVvmG le4vtk0gyjhpwxsg7qvbuernbjecqackiiwckz0wwapap1i2kncltutrlujfvqj+3mw6ci2ekcz4osdv aajxuv1w3vo1yqgmadjlcf9z/vozpqwvtu8zqsikfcudcpmy10mlh8js+316b/xkggfbakdc4mmr2ufk M24VTUyBv1Nk0CGOd4iBQdmUXlgtg3RiesddEbzYYx8=enBnMUpyM0R4anNURVoyNG1JdjQ5QT09 3. How are my emails and files safe from the bad guys, government espionage, competitors and disgruntled employees. Your data is not on someone else s computer The data you send and receive is encrypted The data on your Starkit appliance is encrypted Data on your Starkit appliance cannot be deleted Your data (emails, files, calls, chats) is encrypted at rest and in transit when you use Starkit. That means any unauthorized person who wants to access your data will not be able to read it. If you are using email or cloud storage providers like Gmail or Dropbox or a provider in another country, according to the news, the NSA or any other government, pretty much has a direct line to your mailbox and files. Even if they don t have direct access to your data, it is very easy to ask for it from your provider. For example the US government doesn t need a warrant to access your Gmail or Dropbox account, all they need is a National Security Letter and they don t even have to notify you. If you host your own email and cloud storage using a Starkit software appliance, at the very least your government has to serve you a warrant to access your data. That is if the government wants to follow the Constitution which they seem to have no problem violating on a daily basis. But, in any case, if your Starkit software appliance falls in the wrong hands, Strarkit has you covered, because all data on your appliance is encrypted and is pretty much unreadable. In addition to the data encryption, the data on your Starkit is never destroyed or deleted, you can always recover it. This will protect you from disgruntled employees who will want to delete important company data or data that they want to hide (i.e. email communication). This can dramatically simplify software deployment by freeing you from having to worry about resolving potentially complex OS compatibility issues, library dependencies or undesirable interactions with other applications.
