Remote Desktop Solution, (RDS), replacing CITRIX Home Access

RDS Applications on a Computer Overview RDS has replaced citrix for remote access at home for College staff and pupils. This does not replace Frog and Home learning should still be used via Frog. The following sections describe how to use RDS via a web browser, an ipad and Android device. Using a Web Browser IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL USERS: ENSURE YOU HAVE REGISTERED THE FOLLOWING AS A TRUSTED SITE WITHIN YOUR BROWSER SECURITY SETTINGS: Https://citrix.garthhillcollege.com IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WINDOWS USERS: AFTER LOGGING ON THE BELOW SCREEN, PLEASE SELECT FROM THE CITRIX RA DESKTOP THE REMOTE APP HELP OPTION, TO INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT THAT YOUR PC HAS RECENTLY HAD ALL WINDOWS UPDATES APPLIED. Open your chosen web browser (e.g IE11) and access the Garth Hill website. Select the Citrix RA connection and you will be presented with a screen asking you to authenticate. Enter your normal Network user name and password. Once you have successfully logged in you will be presented with a list of applications that you are entitled to use. e.g Network Drives, Microsoft Office etc. Select the option you wish to use. Once your option is selected a Remote App will install. If prompted select OK to install the App. If you get presented with another login box, please make sure you have followed all of the steps in the RemoteApp Help section.

(You will only need to install the app once on your PC\Device of choice. If you change your PC\Device at any time, you will need to install the app again. This is the same as the previous citrix set up as well). YOU ONLY NEED TO CLICK ONCE ON EACH FOLDER TO INSTALL THE APP Once Remote App is installed you will then see specific drives you are allowed to access, e.g your own Home drive or Students Common. In this example Students Common has been selected and from here the correct files and folders can be accessed. Again the Remote App install pop up will again be displayed:

If you wish to come out of Students Common and go back to the main Desktop screen, minimise the Students Common drive and connect to another App from the main desktop. You can use the up option to go to the main screen with apps to choose from.

Launching an Application You will now be able to select any of the application icons that are available in the presented screen. You only need to click once to launch the application. In our example, we have chosen to launch Microsoft Word 2007. Within the Main App desktop. Select Microsoft Office : You will be presented with the whole suite of MS Office Professional 2007, giving you word, excel, powerpoint etc. Select Microsoft Word. The app will install to your PC\Device. If you get presented with another login box (as shown below), please make sure you have followed all of the steps in the RemoteApp Help section. Before Word launches it will ask you to click on OK to close the dialogue box:

After a second or two, if you are presented with a warning screen this is only the computers way of telling you that you are doing something out of the ordinary across the internet and that you should take care. As a department, your ICT team have taken every precaution to make this service as safe as possible and you should not be alarmed by this message. Click on the connect button at the bottom of the window and carry on. After a brief moment, your remote application will open and you can work as if you were sat at your computer in the school. You have full functionality of the application and you can open, print & save directly from there. You can then close the application in the normal way. When you return to the College and log on to a normal PC\Laptop that does not require RDS remote access, the files and content created at home will be stored and accessed as normal from your desktop. Please remember to log out of the web interface, after use, so that other users can log in. RDS Applications on Apple ipad Overview The following instructions have been compiled using an Apple ipad running ios v7. The instructions involve purchasing a free application from the Apple store and installing on the device. The steps that follow will provide you with access to your Remote Applications as long as you have an active internet connection and an enabled Active Directory (user) account from your school, (e.g Y09-JBLOGGS). Installation Firstly, if you haven t already done so, open the AppStore and search for the Microsoft Remote Desktop application. (This is a free of charge application to use and is designed by Microsoft providing complete compatibility with your service)

After the installation has completed, exit the AppStore and you will see the new icon on the desktop. After installing, an icon appears on the ipad: Connection Open the application and you will be presented with a selection of options. Tap on Remote Resources. This will start a brief wizard which will guide you through the configuration process. There are three pieces of information required in order to make a connection to access the published applications: the URL (web address) of the RDS server, your domain login and your domain password, (Normal College User id and Password).

Enter the information in as supplied by your school. URL: https://citrix.garthhillcollege.com/ The username must be in the form of your normal user id and password. When you are happy with the details you have entered, click the save button. Your ipad will now attempt to connect to the schools servers and discover the remote applications that have been published. After a successful connection, the list of applications detailed on pages 3,4,5 & 6 will be made available to you. All of the applications still run from the server and they still provide you with your customized login environments and correct driving mappings & printers etc. Usage The following pictures demonstrate the Word application being opened. Your available applications may vary depending on what software your school has made available. At this point, you can click on the keyboard icon in connection bar at top of the screen and start typing away:

When you are happy with your work, you can save your document etc as if you were sat at your school computer. You can then close the application in the usual way. You may see the following screen. Do not be alarmed, it just means that your ipad hasn t fully received the terminate command from the server. Tapping the screen where indicated will take you back to the list of published apps.

RDS Applications on Android Overview The following instructions have been compiled using a Galaxy Tab 2 running android v 10.2. The instructions involve purchasing a free application from the Google Play and installing on the device. The steps that follow will provide you with access to your Remote Applications as long as you have an active internet connection and an enabled Active Directory Network user account from your school. (This is a free of charge application to use and is designed by Microsoft providing complete compatibility with your service) After the installation has completed, exit the store and you will see the new icon on the desktop. Connection Open the application and you will be presented with a selection of options. This is where you can define various types of connections as a Remote Desktop is a session connection to a machine desktop (RDP) be it an RDS server, a server admin connection or a Windows desktop that supports RDP access. Your device will now attempt to connect to the schools servers and discover the remote applications that have been published. After a successful connection, the list of applications detailed on pages 3,4,5 & 6 will be made available to you. NB. You may be asked if you would like to trust the certificate. This is Android making sure you want to carry on. Accept the certificate by clicking on Trust Always.

Usage The following pictures demonstrate the Word 2013 application being opened. Your available applications may vary depending on what software your school has made available.
