8 May 2007 Trimble Handhelds Running Windows Mobile Version 5.0 Software: Connecting a Ricoh Caplio 500SE-W Camera This document describes how to connect a Trimble handheld running the Microsoft Windows Mobile version 5.0 software, to a Ricoh Caplio 500SE-W digital camera. This enables you to send digital images over a wireless LAN connection. Before you can establish the connection, do the following: 1. Download and install the Caplio software. 2. Download an FTP server program for Windows Mobile 5.0 software and install this onto the Trimble handheld device. The version that was used when writing this document is PE FTP server. You can download a trial version from http://vieka.com/download.htm. When you have downloaded the software, you must do the following: Configure the Trimble Handheld Configure the Ricoh camera Configure the FTP Application on the device Take photos and transfer them to the handheld This document is for informational purposes only and is not a legally binding agreement or offer. Configure the Trimble handheld To configure your Trimble handheld so that it can connect to the Ricoh camera, do the following: Step 1: Configure the handheld s network settings Step 2: Set up an ad-hoc wireless network Step 1: Configure the handheld s network settings To configure the Trimble handheld, set the Network adaptor so that it can use a private static IP address to connect to another device (in this case the Ricoh camera): 1. Select Start/Settings/Connections/Network Cards. 2. Select the Network Adaptors tab. 3. Select one of the following: If you are connecting to a Trimble GeoExplorer 2005 series handheld, select Wireless B Network Driver or GeoExplorer 802.11g Wireless If you are connecting to a Trimble Recon or Trimble Ranger handheld, select Marvell XXXXX Wireless Card 4. Select Use specific IP address. Warning: If you configure the Trimble handheld to connect using a static IP address, this may disrupt any previous connections. To make sure that you will connect correctly to an access point once you have finished connecting to the camera, change Use specific IP address to Use server-assigned IP address. 5. In the IP address field, enter 192.168.0.53 Note: If preferred, you can use another private static IP address, for example 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x (where x denotes a number). 6. Click the subnet mask and check that it is 255.255.255.0. 7. Click OK. Step 2: Set up an ad-hoc wireless network An ad-hoc (device-to-device) wireless network enables the Trimble handheld to transmit the appropriate signal for the camera: 1. In the Network Cards/Wireless tab select Add New. 2. Enter the network name (in the format ESS-ID, for example TrimbleRicoh) that you want to use as your ad-hoc network. The network name identifies which network the camera will connect to in order to transfer photos. This identifier will be broadcast out to all devices within range, so it is recommended that no confidential information (for example, phone numbers, addresses, or names) is included as part of the name. www.trimble.com Page 2

3. Check that the This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection check-box is selected and then tap Next. 4. Configure any authentication or encryption settings. Do one of the following: If you do not want to set encryption settings for the camera, ensure that you change the Data Encryption field on the handheld to Disabled. If you want to use encryption, use the following settings: Authentication: Open Data Encryption: WEP Key Index: 1 Specify a valid network key Note: You must enter a network key in either hexadecimal (using only characters 0-9 and A-F) or ASCII format (any character). If you use hexadecimal format, the key can be 10 or 26 characters in length. If you use ASCII format, the key can be 5 or 13 characters in length. 5. Make a note of the settings, as you will use them again when you configure the camera. 6. Click Next and then click Finish. 7. If Connecting does not appear next to the network name, tap and hold on the Network name and select Connect from the pop-up menu. www.trimble.com Page 3
