How to Share Your Desktop or a Large Sized File White Paper LogMeIn (LMI) Customer Use Procedure - October 2013 Before going over the procedure steps, let s quickly state the basic two functions available and their potential. 1. Desktop Sharing a. When you share your desktop with someone, they are able to watch as you work with a document or a program, and when connected by phone, discuss what s on-screen. i. Demonstrate how to use a new software program. ii. Demonstrate how to use a software tool you ve just discovered. iii. Work through the wording of a mutual document. iv. Look together for a file v. Show problems having with software vendor vi. Show problems having with another employee in another office vii. Error messages and unexpected responses can be proven! b. Of course, you can reverse this by having the person you invite take control to show you the various elements from the how to to the solution discovering.. 2. File Sharing a. Files too large for regular email can be uploaded for sharing not only that email too large for your own email server, but the recipient s limitation in receiving can be avoided. b. Files to be shared with a group of people can be uploaded and the link sent to the group. c. Files to be repeatedly shared can be uploaded and stay in your online library with a link (renewing the link every 3 months) d. More professional look to sending a file link more straight forward than FTP. 3. Procedure Steps Follow the steps outlined below to take advantage of either Desktop sharing or File sharing. The LogMeIn program is part of your regular program list. Look under All Programs Once you open the program you will see the two options: Desktop Sharing and File Sharing. Explore the overview and options to determine their use. Steps for Desktop Sharing After opening the LogMeIn software, select the option you want to use: Desktop Sharing. Click the Send an invitation button Note that you can accept the default title (date/time) or re-title, and set the expiration for the invitation in minutes, hours or days (01-99). Clicking Next brings you to the choice of Invitation Method. The simplest is to allow LMI to create both the link and the email. You can also choose to have LMI create the link which can then be copied to the clipboard. Alliant Technology Group LMI Desktop Sharing Procedure Page 3
If you have accepted LMI s default to create the email, clicking Next brings to the Compose Invitation Email where you must type in the email address of the recipient (the person you are inviting to your desk) and a short note of explanation or identification. Steps for File Sharing After opening the LogMeIn software, select the option you want to use: File Sharing. When you click on the Share a file button, you ll see the Explorer to browse to your file. Alliant Technology Group LMI Desktop Sharing Procedure Page 6
After finding your file, highlight it and click Open. You will then see a dialogue box allowing you to set the Sharing time limit (01-99 minutes, hours or days), and the Download limit. Generally, unless you have a specific number of people in mind, the Download limit should be set high while the time limit should be set as close as possible to the end of the project need. Clicking Next will bring to the Notification Method dialogue box. Here you can either accept the default where LMI will create both the link to the file and the email itself. If you prefer using your own email, already begun, then the second option will simply provide a link to insert into your email. Clicking Next gives you the opportunity to enter the recipient s email address or a distribution address, and to put a note of explanation.
