Faculty of Education and Social Work Office of Undergraduate and Pre-service Studies November 2015 2016 UNIT SELECTION GUIDE Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Mathematics) and Bachelor of Science In this degree students must complete the following: 1. Teaching areas - students may complete up to TWO teaching areas. Students will be qualified to teach to HSC level in both areas. a. First teaching area in mathematics students must complete a first teaching area in Mathematics. b. Optional second teaching area students may also choose a second teaching area from the table below. Second teaching areas Biology Chemistry Earth and Environmental Science Geography Physics Related Bachelor of Science major Biology Chemistry Environmental Studies Geography Physics 2. Bachelor of Science major students must complete a Bachelor of Science major in Mathematics. Students may also complete an additional Bachelor of Science major to relate to the second teaching area, but this is not compulsory. 3. Compulsory study in Chemistry of Physics all students completing Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, or Physics as a second teaching area must complete a minimum of TWO units of study in Chemistry or Physics, in order to meet the Science teaching requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers.

COURSE STRUCTURE GRID The table below details all of the units of study required to complete the degree, and the order in which they must be completed. The shaded boxes indicate all education units of study. The white boxes indicate units of study undertaken in science. NB: this grid is to be used as a guide only and is subject to change throughout the course of the degree. 2 of 10

GLOSSARY Bachelor of Science major Students must complete 24 senior (3000-level) credit points in Mathematics to obtain a Mathematics major. Completing a second major is possible. MATHEMATICS First teaching area (major sequence): students must complete a major (4 senior (3000-level) units) in Mathematics and complete units as listed below in years 1 4. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics Extension 2 (4-unit) or equivalent may wish to complete Advanced Mathematics units of study and should seek advice from the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (3-unit) or equivalent, should complete FOUR of the following units: MATH1001 Differential Calculus (Sem 1) MATH1002 Linear Algebra (Sem 1) MATH1003 Integral Calculus and Modeling (Sem 2) MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) MATH1005 Statistics (Sem 2) Students who have completed 2-unit Mathematics or equivalent should complete FOUR of the following units: MATH1011 Applications of Calculus (Sem 1) MATH1015 Biostatistics (Sem 1) MATH1013 Mathematical Modelling (Sem 2) MATH1014 Introduction to Linear Algebra (Sem 2) MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) Please note students should aim to achieve a CREDIT (65.0 or above) in MATH1011 and MATH1013 in order to prepare for Year 2 Mathematics units of study that involve higher calculus. Students who have completed General Mathematics or equivalent must seek special permission to complete the following unit: MATH1111 Introduction to Calculus (Sem 1) and TWO of the following units: MATH1004 Discrete Mathematics (Sem 2) MATH1005 Statistics (Sem 2) MATH1013 Mathematical Modelling (Sem 2) MATH1014 Introduction to Linear Algebra (Sem 2) Please note: students should aim to achieve a DISTINCTION (75.0 or above) in MATH1111 and a CREDIT (65.0 or above) in MATH1013 in order to prepare for Year 2 Mathematics units of study that involve higher calculus. Mathematics Bridging Courses There are two bridging courses available for students to gain additional early support: The Extension 1 Course is for people who have completed Mathematics (2-Unit) in the HSC and wish to enrol in a unit of study for which Extension 1 Mathematics (3-Unit) is assumed knowledge. The 2 Unit Course is for people who have not completed Mathematics (2-Unit) and wish to enrol in a unit of study for which 2-Unit Mathematics is assumed knowledge. The main content of this course will be an introduction to differential calculus together with revision of the necessary algebra and coordinate geometry. Knowledge of basic Year 10 mathematics will be assumed. The Bridging Courses run during February and incur an additional cost. Students must complete TWO intermediate units in Mathematics (MATH). For a full list of available units, please consult the Faculty of Education and Social Work (Undergraduate and Graduate Entry) Handbook. (http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/education_social_work/) To obtain the necessary content for teaching, the following units are strongly recommended: MATH2061 Linear Mathematics and Vector Calculus MATH2069 Discrete Mathematics and Graph Theory YEAR 3 Students must complete TWO senior (3000-level) units in Mathematics (MATH)^ YEAR 4 Students must complete TWO senior (3000-level) units in Mathematics (MATH)^ To obtain the necessary content for teaching, the following units are strongly recommended: MATH3061 Geometry and Topology MATH3063 Nonlinear ODEs with Applications MATH3066 Algebra and Logic MATH3068 Analysis ^ For a full list of available units, please consult the Faculty of Education and Social Work (Undergraduate 5 of 10

BIOLOGY First teaching area (Bachelor of Science major): Biology is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below. These units are completed in year 1 and 2 of the degree. Students must complete ALL of the following units: BIOL1001 Concepts in Biology (Sem 1) BIOL1002 Living Systems (Sem 2) TWO junior (1000-level) units of study in Chemistry (CHEM) or Physics (PHYS) Students who have obtained a mark of 80+ in HSC 2-unit biology (or equivalent), or an ATAR of 95 or greater, should complete the following units: BIOL1911 Concepts in Biology (Advanced) (Sem 1) BIOL1902 Living Systems (Advanced) (Sem 2) TWO junior (1000-level) units of study in Chemistry (CHEM) or Physics (PHYS) Biology Bridging Course Students who have not completed HSC biology are strongly advised to undertake the Biology Bridging Course. The bridging course runs from 15-19 February 2016 and incurs an additional cost. CHEMISTRY First teaching area (Bachelor of Science major): Chemistry is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below. These units are completed in year 1 and 2 of the degree. Students who have obtained an ATAR of 95 or above and have completed HSC chemistry with a result of band 5 or 6 may wish to complete advanced chemistry units of study and should seek advice from the School of Chemistry. Students who have completed HSC Chemistry should complete the following units: CHEM1101 Chemistry 1A (Sem 1) CHEM1102 Chemistry 1B (Sem 1) TWO junior (1000-level) units of study in Biology (BIOL) or Physics (PHYS) Students who have not completed HSC Chemistry must complete the following units: CHEM1001 Fundamentals of Chemistry 1A (Sem 1) CHEM1002 Fundamentals of Chemistry 1B (Sem 2) TWO junior (1000-level) units of study in Biology (BIOL) or Physics (PHYS) Chemistry bridging course Students who have not completed HSC chemistry are strongly advised to undertake the Chemistry Bridging Course. The bridging course runs from 3-11 February 2016 and incurs an additional cost. EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE NOTE: All students undertaking Earth and Environmental Science teaching method must contact the course administrator for advice before enrolling. First teaching area (Bachelor of Science major): Earth and Environmental Science is NOT available as a first teaching area. Second teaching area: students must complete the units as listed below. These units are completed in year 1 and 2 of the degree.
