ADSL Wi-Fi Router/modem INSTALLATION GUIDE Welcome! Thank you for choosing Telkom to provide your ADSL service. You have purchased Telkom s ADSL service that enables you to use your existing copper telephone wires to deliver affordable, high-speed access to the Internet. This guide will help you setup your equipment. Telkom ADSL preliminary checklist before you begin, please ensure you have: A Telkom telephone line with a telephone socket less than 2 meters away from your PC. A longer distance will require you to provide your own cable. An available power socket less than 2 meters away from your PC. A longer distance will require you to provide your own power extension. If you want to use a single jack for ADSL traffic and for voice calls (your telephone jack is similar to the one shown on the picture below), you can use a Y-splitter to convert one wall socket into two jacks. Please acquire a splitter from a Telkom Shop or another reputable outlet. Alternative: Y-Splitter If you want to use a single jack for ADSL traffic and for voice calls, you can use a Y- splitter to convert one wall jack into two jacks. PC Minimum requirements A PC must meet the following minimum requirements to be able to run the Telkom ADSL software. Item Operating system Storage External storage Network adaptor Minimum requirements Operating system Service packs Processor speed Physical memory (RAM) Windows 98 Pentium I 200Mhz 64MB Windows ME Pentium I 200Mhz 64MB Windows NT4 Service Pack 6 Pentium II 200Mhz 64MB Windows 2000 Pentium II 300Mhz 128MB Windows XP Pentium II 300Mhz 128MB 100MB CD-ROM drive Ethernet 802.3 (UTP) or USB port If you currently have Internet access, to establish whether or not your PC meets the ADSL access minimum PC requirements you need to download the Telkom ADSL access PC qualification software @ www.telkom.co.za/adsl, go to What do you require to set up DSL?, selecting PC requirements. This test software will provide you with confirmation as to whether or not your PC qualifies for ADSL. Should your PC not qualify the test result sheet will provide you with detail on what element of your PC will require an upgrade to enable you to qualify for TelkomDSL. Page 1 of 7

Step-By-Step detailed installation instructions for the Novice Can t make heads or tails of how to install your ADSL WiFi router/modem according to Figure 2? Don t worry! Just continue with the instructions in this installation guide for step-by-step help. There are three main tasks you must perform to properly setup and configure your Telkom ADSL WiFi router/modem equipment and Internet connection. 1 Prepare telephone connection/s Before you can use your ADSL service reliably, you need to install micro-filters on your regular telephone jack/s in order to prevent voice calls from interfering with the ADSL signal. These instructions will guide you through the process. 2 Connect the ADSL WiFi router/modem Your ADSL WiFi router acts as the interface between your home network or computer and your ADSL service. These instructions will guide you through the steps necessary to connect your router/modem to your phone line and to your computer/network. 3 a. Verify your ADSL connection Verify your ADSL connection in order to register your service on the Telkom database. b. Setup Internet connection Once all the connections are made, you ll want to run our CD installation software to quickly configure your computer to utilize your alwayson ADSL service. Prepare telephone connection/s Check if you can hear a dial tone indicating that your phone is working. If not, call our Telkom Fault Reporting Help desk @ 10212 - twenty-four hours, seven days a week. Unplug the telephone or fax machine from the wall socket. (If the wall socket only has one jack, connect the Y-Splitter as shown on page 1). Unpack the ADSL micro-filter from the small plastic bag. Plug the ADSL micro-filter (LINE side) into one of the wall jacks (or one of the Y-splitter jacks). Plug the telephone or fax machine into the open port on the ADSL micro-filter (PHONE side). Repeat these steps for every regular telephone in your house. All telephone jacks used for voice communication need a micro-filter. The lead from the micro-filter (marked LINE) is plugged into the wall jack. The lead from the telephone or fax machine is plugged into the micro-filter (marked PHONE). Page 3 of 7

Connect the ADSL Wi-Fi router/modem The ADSL Wi-Fi router is the device that transmits data over your ADSL-capable phone line. It acts as an interface between your computer or network and the rest of the Internet. Plug the Router Power Supply telephone cable (left top corner on the Router Power Supply) into the wall socket (or other Y-splitter socket). Plug the opposite Router Power Supply telephone cable (right top corner on the Router Power Supply) into the ADSL router/modem socket marked LINE. The cable from the top left of the power supply is plugged into the wall mount telephone socket (or free port on the Y-Splitter). The cable from the top right of the power supply is plugged into the socket marked LINE on the router. Plug the LAN cable into the ADSL Modem socket marked 1. Plug the other end of the LAN cable into the Ethernet socket in your PC. The LAN cable is plugged into the bottom LAN socket (it has a 1 next to it). The other end is plugged into the socket of the PC LAN card. Page 4 of 7

Plug the mains lead of the power supply into a mains wall socket. Plug the power lead of the power supply (it will have an end connector as you can see in the picture below) into the socket on the back of the ADSL Wi-Fi router marked POWER. The mains lead from the power supply is plugged into a mains power socket. The power lead from the power supply is plugged into the socket marked POWER on the ADSL Wi-Fi router. Once all the connections have been made, you can turn the power to the ADSL router/modem ON. The router/modem will attempt to lock on to the ADSL signal. Table 1 : LED Functions on the modem Once the DSL-LNK is permanently ON (within 3 minutes), your HARDWARE installation is completed and the router/modem has successfully connected. (If DSL-LNK is not permanently ON then refer to Troubleshooting in the manual or contact the Helpdesk number: 080-627-2664). (Proceed with Step 3a Verify your ADSL connection) Page 5 of 7

a. Verify your ADSL connection Using your web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, go to www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to run the verification test. (The Telkom ADSL modems are by default setup with a Telkom Guest account which will enable you to get access to the Telkom website only.) Enter the telephone number and order number linked to the ADSL service and click on the Verify button. (See diagram below). This test will verify the quality of your ADSL service. Allow 3 minutes for the feedback message regarding the verification test result. Depending on the message returned by the verification server, please continue as instructed below. If the verification test is successful, the service you have requested will be available after a period of 30 minutes has elapsed. Thereafter you will have access to the Internet. During this time your Internet link will be lost. If after 30 minutes you do not have access to the Internet, please switch your router/modem off and on, and try to access the Internet again. If this fails, please call the Telkom ADSL 24 hour helpdesk @ 0800 375 375. If the verification test indicates partial success, the available speed will be indicated on your screen and automatically allocated after a period of 30 minutes has elapsed. If you choose to reject the available speed, please call the Telkom ADSL 24 hour helpdesk @ 0800 375 375. If you are a business customer and your ADSL service does not sync. at a minimum speed of 512Kbps, you do not qualify for ADSL. A Telkom representative will contact you in order to make an appointment. PLEASE NOTE: If the Self-Installation (including verification test) has not been completed within 14 days of Telkom contacting you to confirm that you qualify for Self-Installation, Telkom will initiate billing of the service you applied for. (Proceed with Step 3b Setup Internet connection) Page 6 of 7

b. Setup Internet connection Insert the software installation CD in your CD-ROM drive. The setup program should load automatically, displaying a screen like the one below: Click Easy Setup and follow the on-screen prompts for the default settings.* (If it does not start, click on Start-> Run and type in CD:\vbpEasySetup.exe where CD is the drive letter of your CD- ROM drive). Input your username and password as supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Click Setup. (If you get an error message, contact your ISP). You should now be able to go to any site on the Internet (www.) * Refer to the manual on the CD if you require an advanced configuration Very important - please take careful note: Inability to complete installation It is possible that after doing everything to ensure that your line is ADSL friendly, and after you have attempted to install your modem, and having phoned the Telkom ADSL 24 hour help desk number for assistance, and as a last resort having a Telkom technician visit your site, ADSL is not feasible at your site. Having purchased a Telkom modem, you must give the modem back to the Telkom CSB or Telkom Direct Shop. Telkom will reimburse you for the modem and no call out fee will be billed if the fault is network related. If however you have a modem from another supplier, you ll have to negotiate with them. Contact numbers Telkom ADSL 24 hour help desk @ 0800 375 375. TelkomInternet powered by ADSL service activation on 0800 500 200 (during office hours, Monday to Friday) or call your relevant ISP.
