Introduction BLËSK is a complete suite of applications for monitoring and managing your network. It comes with its own Linux operating system, secured and optimized to provide the best possible performance. It should be noted that the installer will delete any existing partitions on your disk in order to install the software required to use BLËSK. Before beginning the installation, please be sure to backup any data that you wish to keep before continuing.
1. Booting from the CD Once you have burned the ISO file onto a CD and have used it to boot your computer, press Enter to begin the installation.
2. Choose the server type to install You will need to choose the type of server to install. Two choices are possible: BLËSK Server - The default value. Select this option to install BLËSK on your server. Network probe Server - Choose this option only if you want to use the machine as a probe to collect data that will be sent to another BLËSK server.
3. Disk formatting and installation Once your selection is made, the installer will ask you to select the disk you want to format. If you have more than one disk on your server, the installer will give you the opportunity to choose the one on which you wish to install BLËSK.
4. Confirmation of disk formatting At this stage of the installation, the installer will ask you to confirm that you wish to format the drive before continuing.
5. Program installation Once confirmation is made, the program will begin to install all the software packages necessary for the proper functioning of the BLËSK server.
6. Host and domain name To ensure proper functionality of the applications, it is very important to provide the correct network information; otherwise it is likely that some applications will not work as expected. The host name and domain name are required, and must be provided as a complete FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). For example: if you wish to use the name blesk.domain.local as the FQDN for your server, then it must be entered as {blesk.domain.local} and not only {blesk} or {domain.local}.
7. IP Address Next the installer will ask you to set a static IP address for your server. This address will be used later to connect to the BLËSK management console.
8. Subnet Mask The subnet mask is also required. Check with your network administrator if you are unsure of the address to enter.
9. Default Gateway Enter the IP Address of the default gateway
10. Primary domain name server At this stage, the IP address of the primary name server (DNS server) must be entered.
11. Secondary domain name server The name of the secondary server field is optional but recommended. This may be used if the primary server is not available or is too overloaded.
12. Email Address The installer will ask you to provide an email address. This will be used for the transmission of messages from the BLËSK server.
13. Password (read only) for SNMP community An SNMP community string is a text string that acts as a password. It is used to authenticate messages sent between the management station and the device. The community name to be defined here will be used for read-only queries.
14. Password (write only) for SNMP community Here we define the community name for SNMP write access. This can be used to enable or disable network interface ports for example. This information is optional.
15. Enter IP address or FQDN of the email server Enter the IP address or FQDN of your network mail server. BLËSK will use this to deliver any notifications or alerts that are generated by the software.
16. Define IP address for the «core switch» The "Core Switch" is the main switch to which all the networking equipment is connected. It is possible that you have more than one but we need only the IP address of one of them to trace the entire network.
17. Installation Complete.
Use of BLËSK To begin configuring and using the BLËSK server, open the web browser of your choice and enter the IP address that was defined during installation of the system. Please refer to the user guide for more information on using the BLËSK management console.
